once is enough Cry Nov 26, 2014

I was craving for some light bites and decided to get the tutu kueh from Eastern Rice Dumpling since it has been quite a while where I had tutu kuehs. I ordered three peanut and two coconut tutu kuehs. The cost for the tutu kueh is $2.50 for 5. I ordered takeaway and to my disappointment, the tutu kuehs stuck on to the pandan leaf of the neighbouring tutu kueh. As such, the tutu split into half when I tried to separate the tutu cake from each other. It is quite frustrating as it has all disintegrated. Moreover, the tutu flour is also tough and the fillings are quite little. I don’t think I will buy it again.

Mediocre food Cry Jan 29, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

When Sushi Express just opened, I went there for dinner since there is a very attractive promotion of $1 per sushi plate. I went on the first day of its operations and the queue is really long as expected. As I had anticipated that, I went early at 5:50pm and the two of us managed to get seated in around 20 minutes. To tell the truth, I was sorely disappointed. Everything is self-service and the sushis are all there on the conveyor belt. As there are too many people, the plates of sushi that we are looking out for are always taken away by other patrons before it reaches us. In the end, we had to just get up and walk over to where the chef was so that we can take the unagi sushi once the chef placed it on the belt. That aside, the food is mediocre. I guess being the first day of operations, perhaps the quality of the food is affected. The raw sushi are not fresh and it has a little fishy taste to it. The raw sushi is not cold but at room temperature which spoils it for me since sashimi is supposed to be cold. In addition, the cuts are thin and there is simply not satisfying. Of course, I can’t complain too much since it costs only $1, but I would spend $10 more and enjoy fresh and normal cuts of raw sushi.

Mr Avocado  Cry Jun 13, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Juices

At this food centre, there are two stalls selling avocado milkshake which are just a few stalls beside each other. I went for the avocado sold by Mr Avocado. Each cup costs $2.50. I was eagerly anticipating the taste as I heard that the avocado milkshakes here are quite of standard. However, I was felt disappointed. The avocado taste could barely be tasted, instead, I felt more like I was drinking coconut milkshake instead of avocado milkshake because the coconut milk taste just overpowered the avocado taste. I would think it is because the amount of avocado used is too little. Overall, while the drink tasted alright, I felt it is not worth it since I want to be able to taste the richness of avocado in my avocado milkshake.

Lemper Udang  Cry May 05, 2013
Categories : Peranakan / Nonya | Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

I was craving for something savoury and the counter girl recommended the Lemper Udang to me. It is essentially glutinous rice roll with spicy shrimp filling, wrapped in a banana/pandan leaf as shown. As I have not tried it before, I decided to get it. Each piece costs $1.20. The shrimp filling is very savoury though I wished it could be spicier. I didn't manage to take a photo of the cross section of the lemper udang, but the ratio of filling to rice is quite little as well, so I ended up eating a lot of rice and not tasting much of the shrimp. Overall, I think I will probably not buy this again since it is too expensive.

Spending per head: Approximately $1

cold breakfast Cry Jun 06, 2012

Categories : Coffeeshop | Noodles

I wanted a fuss free breakfast, so I decided to order the fried bee hoon and yellow noodle from this stall. Sometimes I guess queues are really an indicator of the taste of the food, and since there isn't anyone queuing at all even during the peak breakfast hour, it should have alerted me. However, I just went ahead and bought it, and regretted it. Although I took 10 minutes to reach my destination before I started eating, the noodles are far too cold, and I suspect it is already cooled when I bought it, because if it is warm, it should not have cooled down so fast. Also, the yellow noodle is far too saltish, so I ended up just eating the beehoon and the fried fillet. Not a good experience so this is probably my first and only time ordering from this stall.
