My friend raved about the new Ramen Play outlet at Novena Square which now occupies the space vacated by Long John Silver. We dropped by on a weekday to check out the place, which resembled an open concept dining hall in a university hostel. It was not crowded since there are five or six ramen restaurants above Novena MRT. Service was brisk and friendly.

The rice paper spring rolls that my friend recommended had been sold out so we settled on the lobster salad wraps ($4.20++ for 3pcs) whick were ok but unremarkable.

I ordered the ChaShu Tonkotsu Ramen $12.80++ - my usual item for first time visit to benchmark the taste and quality of the restaurant's ramen. My dish arrived in a pretty Japanese style ceramic bowl. Presentation was nice, with half an onsen egg perched on top, but unfortunately the ramen and the soup were run of the mill, below par for a ramen specialist. The chashu was not bad but sliced too thinly. The ramen was alright but not Q enough for my liking. I was disappointed with the soup which had a layer of oil floating on top; the broth was runny, lacked depth and flavour, and on the salty side. I was relieved I did not order their signature ChaShu Shoyu Ramen - if the tonkotsu broth was so salty, the shoyu soup base should be worse.

For dessert we tried the imported brown rice ice cream ($4.20++), this was nice with a mild nutty flavour. Overall, an ok but unexceptional meal at $20 per head without drinks.
