when i was queueing for shi le yuan 实叻圆糜 the other day, the guy in front of me said ye shanghai was cheaper & had a larger spread, and he only came to shi le yuan because ye shanghai was closed that day.

so i came with my sis & b-i-l to try out ye shanghai on 16.7.2015. it’s not bad!^^ we came at 1030am so no queue, but also not all dishes were ready.

we ordered total 10 dishes. it came to only S$20.60. so the man was right, a bit cheaper than shi le yuan, more variety of dishes just as good but not really better. maybe the veg dishes were better here.

there was no ngoh soon (small treadfin) & mullet 乌鱼 they only served those in the evening. we ordered the “kee her” fish. i thought it was very good actually taken with tau jeon, good proxy to mullet 乌鱼.

the big intestines was good very well cleaned, nice texture, slightly milder lor 鲁 taste, i quite like it.  the kong bak belly pork too. nice big intestines.

veg here very nice. the brinjal was every tasty. pig’s skin was very good. just like the ng ah sio one we had recently at rangoon road, no fat, all collagen.

salted fish minced pork 咸鱼饼 was very good too. somewhat different from shi le yuan but equally good.

only dish not great was the steamed egg. not much taste, maybe that was to be expected of a steamed egg with nothing in it.

peanuts nothing to talk about.

spinach was very good, tasty!

tau kee was the usual.

cabbage was very good, very sweet & tasty. we had a second order.

so after the 10 dishes, sis went to order 2 more, cabbage for S$1.and pomfret for S$4. pomfret was good too. i didn’t mind it but maybe i prefer the kee her more.

so we had 10 dishes (top & above) for S$20.60. then greedy added 2 more dishes so total S$25.60 including 3 porridge. really good meal & totally satisfying with or w/o the additional 2 dishes.
10 dishes

Was craving for some teochew muay so I decided to try this place out. Was here on a weekday night and there was a constant long queue.Got ourselves the niang tofu, minced pork ball, eggplant and some kind of melon. I didn't really like the porridge as it was too starchy for my liking. The minced pork ball was not bad, and the melon and eggplant were ok too. I think the niang tofu can be better.

Special mention to the stirfry liver and potato which were so good, my chopsticks was drawn to it like a magnet, continuously picking at it!
The pork liver at Ye Shang Hai is mixed with a savoury thick brown sauce which is perfect to mask the horrible liver smell! For the first time in my life, i saw myself eating more liver than I had ever eaten in my life!! It is that good!
The potatoes are also well cooked to the point where it is soft, but not mushy, the perfect bite. Just mentioning it is making me salivate.

Kong Bao or Kung Po dish was good. The dish had adequate amount of spiciness with diced chicken stirred fried in peanuts, vegetables, and chili peppers. With the sweet gravy mixed well in the porridge, it can also be a good substitute to the braised sauce provided.

The texture of Tau Ki (Dried Beancurd Skin) was not too soft and not too oily. Additional bowl of braised gravy was given upon request for our porridge.

All in all, Ye Shanghai serves a value for money dinner especially when we talked about Teochew Mui. Their competitor in the same vicinity whom sell the similar items may cost twice as much. Therefore, they are always my first choice for budget meal.

Service
Usually the queues are long and I went there at odd hours today, 4pm, there are no queues. Service is fast.

Ambience
Tables and tables are seen having Ye Shang Hai Porridge. Plates and bowls are cleaned shortly after customers left. The turnover is quite high too.

Price
Economical pricing as compared to other porridge stalls.

Recommendations / Tips
Be prepared to queue during lunch hours.

This place is still busting with people even after dinner hour, but no worries as the whole coffeeshop is spacious and it won't be difficult to find a table, just maybe you have to share with fellow porridge lover!

As per mentioned in the title, this HDB coffeeshop stall is a popular dinner/supper option for many taxi drivers. Whilst in the queue, you may be asked to order your number of porridge or rice first. I ordered 2 porridge, a bowl of "arm" which is the porridge water/soup which my partner says it contains all the goodness of rice grain and a small bowl of gravy sauce. Dishes are served in small round or over plates. There is probably 30-40 kinds of dishes for you to choose. I ordered the huge dao kwa, potato, stir fried pig liver with ginger, shark's meat and cabbage. Typical condiments to go along include the chilli sauce and bean paste mix. My favorite is actually the pig liver and shark's meat. The shark's meat is not commonly found and its not spicy, also it does not have too many bones like stingray such that its troublesome to eat it. It just leave you wanting for more. My order came up to only $8 which in my opinion for teochew porridge, its pretty cheap, with 5 dishes usually i'm billed around $10 already.

To restraint myself, I ordered Baby Octopus in Sambal Chili, Lemon Chicken, Cabbage, Braised Peanuts, Braised Tau Kee and One Meaty Fish. I like the Baby Octopus the most - octopus is not chewy (over cooked) and the sambal sauce is not too spicy and taste awesome when you mix the sauce into your porridge.

Total bill came out to around $11 which I think is cheap for 2 pax.

Went there at around 9pm to avoid the car park peak hours but even then the car park is already full when we reach and the coffeeshop is about 3/4 filled with their patrons. Guess they are really popular for their cheap and nice porridge.

Opening hours is till midnight and I heard that it is famous among the cab uncles to satisfy their grumbling stomach if they are driving the graveyard shift.

This stall has been my go-to with my family and I remember my dad ordering enough dishes to FULLY cover the surface of a LARGE table!! To today, it remains a place to come to for home-cooked goodness outside your home. The quality of their plain porridge is already a plus on its own. And the other 30 to 40 dishes are mostly cooked very very nicely.

Ye Shang Hai Teochew Porridge is one place where my family love to go to. Opened till the wee hours, one usually can spot a long queue for their cheap and nice porridge. With so many different variety of dishes to choose from, it's like eating a simple buffet. Usually we would request for a small bowl of the plain porridge soup. It's the place to go to whether it's raining (for the hot porridge soup) or sunny (no appetite, good to eat porridge).

Read the previous review. Since my office is located at Bukit Merah, I decided to check the place out. Surprisingly, my colleague was aware of this "famous" Teochew porridge stall. And indeed it was, with the long queue of customers!

First glance at the dishes did not attract me. But it's the VARIETY which did!! Just as any mixed rice stall I frequent, I always enjoy choosing from a wide selection of dishes. The queue, though long, moves fast. So, I did not have to wait long for my turn. Since there were 3 of us, we selected the following 6 dishes:

Giant Pork Balls - This dish was very flavourful. Wonder if it's the fatty meat grinded in it which led to the outburst of flavour!

Tofu - Similarly delicious.

Vegetables (probably Cai Xin) - I'm poor at naming vegetables, being not a market dude. It was our only vegetable dish, so definitely much appreciated. However, I'd like to mention that servings are small over here. I saw how the guy, who scooped the vegetables onto the small plate, ensures that the vegetables scooped out are just enough to cover the dish area of the plate. Seriously, how much does vegetable cost anyway? They would score more points from me if they had been generous in this.

Curry Chicken - Great! Would be good for dipping roti prata too!

Fried Chicken Chop - Skin's a little chewy, hence don't really fancy this.

Chai Po Egg - This one is a little salty, but still ok.

Total, including 3 bowls of plain porridge - $14.70 (reasonable price)

The "operation" at the stall is rather interesting. 1 guy takes the order and scoops the dishes onto small plates and placed them on a nearby round table. My observation is that there is always 1 red plate among the other yellow ones for each customer. It might be a mark to distinguish the food between customers. "Waiters/waitresses" will serve the food to your table. What left me amazed is how did they know which dishes belonged to which customers. Were they observing me while I was ordering?! By the way, there is cashier counter at the stall but you do not pay there (though you can see $$$ there). So, is the guy there like a "money changer"?
