Brownice Ice Cream is the first dessert place in Singapore to serve low-calorie, low-GI, low-fat, vegan-friendly and dairy-free ice cream made from organic brown rice. Guilt-free ice cream at it's best. Even though it's dairy-free, you should note that the ice cream does not taste icy at all, though it also lacks the creamy taste, Brownice ice cream still holds the smooth textures.

The 4 scoops of ice cream we picked were :

Coconut

Hazelnut

Matcha

Peanut Butter

It might sound like alot of flavours, but they all went well together. First off, if this is your first visit to Brownice, definitely go for the coconut! There's real coconut fruit embedded in the ice cream! It is slightly creamy, with authentic coconut taste and sweetness. It goes really well with the chocolate syrup topping.

The matcha wasn't too bitter, and the sweetness level was just right for me. I don't like matcha ice creams that taste too sweet or artificial. Over here, the matcha was closer to the grainy texture, as unlike the coconut, the matcha wasn't able to have a smooth aftertaste. Nevertheless, probably the best guilt-free and vegan matcha you can taste in Singapore!

The peanut butter was too sweet for my liking, but you could taste real peanut butter embedded into the ice cream. Think of chunky monkey from ben and jerrys. Lots of peanuts too, that adds a crunchy bite in every scoop!

The hazelnut was almost like eating nutella ice cream! It was a tad sweet, and I probably wouldn't finish a whole scoop by myself, but give me a scoop of coconut or matcha, and it will magically disappear with a spoon in my hand.

The waffle here is of a crispy consistency. I would say, this is one of my most favourite waffle places in Singapore. Despite the waffle not having any fragrance or aroma. The light, airy and yet biscuit like edges makes this waffle so addictive.

Overall :  A great place to get vegan ice cream, even if you're not a vegan, or trying to stay on a healthy diet. The ice creams here are great, and so are their waffles. There's free wifi too! Definitely download the Entertainer App before heading down to Brownice!

Food Menu

We would think vegan food to be bland and unappealing, but backed by the rising eat-healthy trend in recent years and the increase in vegans, the vegan/vegetarian industry has seen businesses such as taiwanese-vegetarian Sufood (read the review here) by the Putien Group, striving to improve food quality and taste to even appeal to mainstream diners. Brownice however, sets itself distinctly apart from the competition by serving a fully Italian menu of pizzas and pastas.

A differentiating point about Brownice is that they make their own vegan cheese, and it tastes very similar to cheese, but without the stringiness that some may miss. Apparently, to do a vegan cheese that tastes decent isn't easy and this definitely made the mark.

Arancini ($12)

Arancini are fried, crumbed rice balls filled with vegan cheese and tomato. The marinara was a very well-seasoned blend of flavours that wasn't too sour or heavy on the tomato taste. My dining partner and I, who are not usually marinara fans, lapped this up, though it could use just a little less salt. A bonus for the health-conscious is that Brownice uses brown rice for this dish, consistent with the bistro's healthy slant. This dish was our favourite, all thanks to the superb marinara.

Four Seasons Pizza ($18)

This thin-crust pizza came in four variations, each with two slices. There were the toppings of artichokes with soy ham; taggiasche olives; sundried tomatoes and capsicum; truffle mushroom. The imported olives were juicy but too salty, though that has more to do with the preserved nature of olives. Our favourite slices were the truffle mushroom and artichokes with soy ham.

Brownice definitely served up flavours that are very close to the Italian taste in Italy. We did not miss the meat in this meal. The waffles and ice cream are touted as a must-try, so we will be headed there for it next time.

Coconut-Gula Melaka "Egg" ($5.50/ mini)
Coconut and gula melaka ice cream on digestive biscuit base. Delightly refreshing pairing.
The ice cream is smooth with bits of the coconut flesh in it. It would be better if the flavour of the gula melaka has been stronger. The biscuit base gives it a slightly salty taste. Unique combination of the sweet and salty.

Pure Hazelnut Bomb ($5.50/mini)
Thick layer of hazenut ice cream on a fruit and nut chocolate base.
The ice cream is very smooth and rich which kind of reminds me of peanut butter. Like this very much.

Overall friendly staff with yummy desserts. There is also plain water and tissue to help yourself to at the side of the counter. Best of all the place is not crowded.

The Upper Thomson area has enjoyed popularity for offering different F&B choices. Ice cream parlours are no strangers here, with Salted Caramel, Udders, NeLi and Scoopz within the shophouses. Satisfying my waffle cravings, I ordered the Waffles with Peanut Butter Chocolate ($7.30; $3.80 for waffles, $3.50 for 1 scoop). The waffles is crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. The Peanut Butter Chocolate accompanying it, while trying to strike a balance between both flavours, tasted more chocolatey than the peanut butter taste.

Anyone can enjoy the ice cream here without feeling guilty due to the nature of the contents. If you are around the Sin Ming / Upper Thomson area, this is one spot that should not be missed.

You may also ask for a teaspoon sample of the ice creams before deciding which to order.

Luckily, both the Madagascar Vanilla and Cookies & Cream were not too sweet. Not too sure if coconut milk was used but there was an odd coconut aroma which lingers on.

Don’t mistake, I love coconut but perhaps I’ll save it for other desserts.Constructed of French Chocolate, Hazelnut Chocolate ice cream and a raw crust, the tri-layer mudpie $9.80 refused to budge despite being left in room temperature for 20min. The ice cream flavours were more tolerable than the individual scoops earlier, and lovely contrasted with the salty biscuit base. The original toppings of caramelized salt almonds which ran out of stock, was a sign that they are likely to be tastier than our chocolate chips and granola.

Due to the ingredients, the price of Brownice’s vegan ice cream is not very nice. But perhaps its a good investment for our health.Full post and pics on http://dairycream.blogspot.jp/2014/01/brownice.html

I have always thought that to make ice cream, one must use dairy cream but Brownice has claimed that they uses organic brown rice milk. Thus, i was very impressed when i see that they have a huge variety of flavours on offer which most are rather unique.

Feeling adventurous with my friend, we chose the Chendol flavour and Pumpkin Coconut flavour. Both flavours taste really natural and one can be sure none of the artificial flavourings are added to them. The texture is creamy and doesn't lose out much compared with the usual dairy cream-made ones. I like both flavours a lot, though i felt that a real chendol will satisfy me more with the varying texture the different ingredient giving me more mouth feel.

I did not regret making a special trip down just to taste their ice cream this time but i will only drop by next time only if i am around the area.

Frankly speaking, if you're looking for ice cream as an indulgence, the taste here would disappoint. It isn't a full bodied buttery creamy taste (think: Haagen Daaz) that you would find in here and so I wouldn't recommend the chocolates and vanilla flavours to you. But the fruits however, are a totally different story.

If you're looking for ice cream to take away the heat, something to soothe the throat, a pick-me-up or simply, a way to end your meal then, look no further than Brownice.

Made of organic ingredients that are vegan friendly and dairy free, their banana-oat and mulberry flavours are highly recommended!
They've stopped matcha for a bit as the aromatic matcha powder from japan cannot seem to be found for some reason. See, this is how seriously they take their craft. No top ingredients, no go.

The pricings are reasonable. $3.70 for a scoop and $5.30 for a double. Salted Caramel further out front sells a double scoop for $5 and...
Should we talk calories here? Between you and I, I'd pay more for my indulgence assured that I can eat up with little guilt and firm confidence that you're getting what's good for your body
