I have always wanted to try the porridge from this Alishan Taiwan Porridge place near Kovan. They have a wide variety of dishes available. I tried the Otah - was not bad, not too spicy and had pieces of fish meat within. We also had the fish - I liked the gravy particularly as it went well with porridge (they also had sweet potato porridge). Do get the fried ngoh hiang, it's very popular and tasty as well.

The Alishan restaurant here spans an area of two coffeshops. Besides offering a large range of zi char dishes, they also sell taiwan beef stew noodles. Today, I decided to focus on the noodles. Both the dry and soup versions were a bit too salty for my liking. The beef stew was a mix of beef tendons and lean meat which were given in generous portions. The beef could be stewed till more tender though. The amount of vegetables given were plenty too.Generally still ok if you are someone who likes your dishes saltier. Otherwise, you can give this place a miss.Beef Stew Noodles (Dry) - $6Beef Stew Noodles (Soup)

I was in the province and wanted to give it a try.My husband was saying, Alishan is quite famous for its food. So were the price famous too!I only have the chicken, fish, egg and vegetable and it was $20+ for 2.Food wise, I must say it taste like true home cook food but I only have one complain though. The food is not serve hot, despite there's warmer to warm all the dishes.

During this CNY period one tends to over eat and we were feasting the whole day long and when dinner time came, we have to settle with something light. A friend ended up getting some stewed pork belly with buns apart from our stewed beef hor fun for us. We thought we wouldn't be able to finish our food but we did. Both the meat were so tempting and they were very tender, tasty and were just as good and thankfully some of the stewed pork were lean too.

Kovan has a street full of traditional delights. One of my favourite is teochew porridge. Good old teochew porridge in the middle of the night when you're hungry. They have a wide variety of traditional dishes. Including the steamed peanuts and salted egg. The plain tasting porridge and the accompanying dishes leaves you with a home sweet home feeling.
