Came here for lunch today. The place was packed even for weekday lunch as it was recently reported that the place would be closed by the end of this month. It was a queue at the dim sum counter, which was usually rare for weekday. Not sure how the uncle calculated my bill, but including the iced tea it was $24.40. There was no receipt with the breakdown today. He was in a rush and I did not ask for one. Although it was packed, i managed to find a table outside under the shade with cool wind blowing from behind. The juicy shiitake mushroom was stuffed with juicy flavourful minced meat. The steamed yam cake was topped with chopped chinese sausage and dried shrimps, with cubed of yam inside. Best with the chilli sauce. The steamed glutinous rice was topped with chinese sausage, shiitake mushroom and chicken. Felt it was a tab dry.The Braised Chicken Feet (Phoenix Claws) was flavourful with gelatin like texture. Beware of the little bones.Washed down all with a glass of iced black tea which was too sweet but refreshing to have during this hot weather.Managed to grab the last 2 pieces of char siew buns which smelt great. continue reading

Lks and I decided to meet up for breakfast at around 10am. I seldom want to wake up that early but sometimes the early bird catches the worm. For this case, this small and squeezy coffee shop that is located along the streets of Upper Thomson is often crowded during breakfast period. We reached the coffeeshop and started ordering dim sums. Besides dim sums, this place also have cze char and roasted meats. I found the char siew pao not too bad. If the flour was thinner, it would be just nice for me.I ordered this soup dish as I think that at least with soup around, it would not be too dry. It was more like a giant shuigao and it tasted meaty with crunchy bits of water chestnuts inside. 'Har gao' was nice and quite moist. It was one of my favourite dim sums. The xiao long pao was different. For those who loves soupy xiao long pao, you will be disappointed as they don'tcontain any soup inside. I supposed they were meant to be dry.I found the siew mai too dry and not 'juicy' enough. I did not feel any pieces of prawn inside while chewing them.I liked juicy mushrooms. If you are not a fan of it like Lks, don't order.Inside the soft skin was a chunk of meat. Basically, most dishes we ordered had meat in them (should be the same meat),but tasted slightly different from each other. The fried dumplings were too dry for us. We just have to dip them into the chilli sauce and they tasted better.Lor mai kai disgusted me. Not that it tasted horrible (Lks thought that it was not bad), it freaking reminded me of my armycookhouse food (breakfast). I think I had generated a phobia for lor mai kai because of the stupid cookhouse, and I gotnausea whenever I see one.For drinks, we both ordered the home-made barley. We both felt that drinking barley while eating dim sums was a total mismatch (like drinking sake while eating laksa). The barley was thick and had plenty of barley bits blended inside (like 'cum' from a male's reproductive organ). continue reading

I came with my mother for a afternoon tea in this dim sum restaurant. We ordered some of their signature dim sum like fried carrot cake, prawn dumpling and siew mai. All tasted quite nice but my personal favourite got to be the siew mai. The siew mai came in 3 pieces per basket. It tasted very old school and simple but i liked it. The size is rather small but with tasty filling wrapped in the wanton skin. This place is a good choice for afternoon tea. continue reading

I saw a food review on this old style cafe by a well-known blogger, hence decided to try their signature KL-style Hokkien noodles. Unlike the Singapore style, this KL style Hokkien noodles is stir-fried in dark sauce, the thick noodles has a good texture to chew on. However, this one tastes so-so only, and I'm sure I have tried a better one else-where. The 'moon-light' hor fun is quite nice though. The flat rice-noodles is flavourful and the raw egg on top adds on an extra bit of moist to the dish. continue reading

There are many shop houses and eateries along Upper Thomson Road. Near the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Jalan Todak, there is an old coffeeshop setting restaurant that sells yummy traditional dim sum. It is always quite crowded during the weekend but service is quite fast. To get here, take MRT to Marymount station and go to exit A. From exit A, walk about 100 metres to Upper Thomson Road. You will see a SPC petrol kiosk. Cross the road and take bus number 52, 132, 162, 163, 165, 166, 167, 855 or 980 from the bus stop. Hua Nam Restaurant is one bus stop away. continue reading
