Although Loy Kee Chicken Rice & Porridge is recommended by several celebrities, I feel that this stall at Whampoa Drive over-rated. The most important element of chicken rice is the rice but it is not fragrant and wet. The mixture of sesame and light soya sauce sauce that they drizzle on top of the chicken was oily and too salty. Also, the chili tasted different and weird, not to my liking. Kind of disappointed with their Chicken Rice. continue reading

Loy Kee was once famous for its Hainanese Chicken Rice cuisine back in the 90s as they were voted for the best selling chicken rice in Singapore that had met the quality, satisfaction and standard from its patrons. Back then, Loy Kee Chinese Rice Franchise Stalls was seen almost everywhere and thus their presence was made known so as their reputation.Till today, we are still able to have a feel of how a Traditional Hainanese Chicken Rice Feels like but unfortunately not many were left. I guess those that can survived with the franchise, their standards should be there. There were 2 Loy Kee Stalls in Balestier. I was recommended to the Hawker's instead of their premium outlet as my friend thinks that this stall tastes better. Let's go! Having occupying 2 stall units in Whampoa Makan Place, one would have thought their business would be good. Anyway, the stall is manned by some folks. The lady and man who had served us was friendly.Soup was light but tasty and packs a good chicken aroma throughout. The water boiled Bok Choy was sufficiently tasty with oyster sauce and fried shallots. Not over greasy and I simply loves the crunch!Cost: $3Half chicken meat was soft and tender, maintaining a good quality standard. I like the sweet and sour Ah Char Taste that was tucked by the side of the plate. Yum Yum!Cost: $11Chicken was succulent and complemented with their daily home-brewed garlic chilli, hand grounded ginger and the piquant dark soy sauce that was easily accessible from the condiments rack given. Most of the chicken rice has too much sesame oil added. Unlike Loy Kee's their rice was fragrant and not that oily.Overall, I find that Loy Kee serves a reasonable comfort food and most important of all, it's delicious and wallet friendly. For detailed review, please visit http://umakemehungry.blogspot.sg/2013/09/loy-kee-chicken-rice.html continue reading

If you have no idea what to eat or simple do not favor chinese food... The one thing that you guys can really do is to have some chicken rice...When some of my friends come from overseas... what they will ask me for is a plate of chicken rice and when it is around 4pm in the afternoon... I will take them to this stall for an average plate of chicken rice. The key to good chicken rice is that it is best fresh around 11 or 12 in the afternoon. At night they will start preparing for steamboat which was back in the day. It was kind of a seafood steamboat if you stayed here or dined here many years... you can actually check out the steamboat together with the famous sugar cane juice that is only available at night at this market...The chicken is usually the steam one though i like the roasted one a thousand times more... the chili is so-so... i feel that chili makes the chicken rice awesome... The garlic content in the chicken rice is quite ok.. not as much.. they also have a condiment tray for all the condiments such as small saucers... ginger, chili, light sauce and dark sweet sauce... Averaging around $3.50 a plate it has other meats such as char siew and roast pork...Not too bad stuff....I just dont like the environment there as it is really dirty sometimes... continue reading

My son brought me to have chicken rice at this place. We ordered half of the roasted chicken with rice to share. The skin has got a nice flavor and tasted not very oily. The meat was tasty and juicy. The chilli and garlic paste went very well with the chicken. The chilli did not taste too spicy to me. The rice has got nice fragrance and grainy in texture. One of the better rice that i ever tried. continue reading

Another preferred stall for chicken rice. We usually eat here whenever we are in this food centre. Our usual order is half of roasted chicken with 2 plates of rice. Their roasted chicken served with achar and cucumber slices. The rice is fragrant, grainy and not too oily. The chicken was nicely roasted but still tasted juicy and tender. Their chilli is not too spicy with a hint of lime and ginger. continue reading
