Compelled by the forces of gentrification in Singapore, many old establishments had to unfortunately give way to residential buildings or skyscrapers. Most recently, Dakota Crescent has been slated for demolishing. For the interim, we see a mishmash of the old and the new. In the Katong neighbourhood, we see the iconic Sinpopo Brand with a nostalgic theme representing the latest dining establishments; Kim Choo Kueh Chang would then illustrate what's traditional.Kim Choo Kueh Chang had me squealing in excitement with the variety of Peranakan sweet treats laid out before my eyes. Many of these kuehs have disappeared of the shelves of neighbourhood bakeries with their falling popularity. Although those who grew up eating these snacks for breakfast can rattle the names off their head, the younger generation have to Google for them or refer to them by colour and shapes. In my frenzy, I bought the ones that I have recollection of eating before - this is the Ondeh Ondeh (the "green round one with sweet syrup"). I've tried a lot of versions in Singapore but none of them could match up to the nostalgic tastes I had in Malaysia before. I was looking for that particular satisfaction and Kim Choo does it perfectly. Designed almost scientifically that fits my mouth nicely, the ondeh ondeh is a sweet pop laced with coconut flakes and chewy pandan flavoured kueh that bursts into a gula melaka cacophony.Kueh Dada Gulung contains fibrous coconut flakes within its thin pastry skin - another of my favourite which I haven't seen for a long time. The Kueh Bika Ambon at the back has a hint of sweet potato and is most springy as compared to other pastrieds. Almost like the White Sugar Sponge Cake which I wanted to buy too!The dumplings were tasty due to the generous pork fillings. Nonetheless, and were too oily for comfort too. If you don't mind the extra oiliness and only care about the price and taste, this is the one for you! continue reading

Kim Choo Kueh Chang Babi is just a stone throw away from the famous Fei Fei Wanton Mee Stall. As the Chinese saying goes "走过路过,不要错过 ", thus I do not want to miss a good opportunity as I seldom have the chance to be in Joo Chiat area. I have bought some Nonya Kueh, my favourite 9 layers kueh and the Green Kueh! Each packed cost S$2.00.My boxes of Kueh were all nicely placed into Kim Choo's Peranakan style plastic bag. How traditional! The kueh from Kim Choo are different as each layer from the 9 layers kueh are very soft and slimey, comes with a pleasant fragrance. Likewise for this Green Kueh, the top portion was filled with pandan favour and jelly tasting while the bottom is made up of sticky rice. continue reading

This is my favourite rice dumpling and I will normally have it twice a month whenever I pass by this rice dumpling outlet. The meat inside is juicy and really fragrant. The glutinous rice is soft and not too soggy, goes very well with the meat filling. Beside, you can also taste the diced mushroom, chestnuts in it as well. At merely $3 per piece, is a good buy and value for money. Shop is clean and staffs are friendly as well. continue reading

We were strolling along this stretch of shops after our dinner at a nearby restaurant and was overwhelmed with so many different eateries and was so tempted to go in and buy some things from it. Was I glad that Kim Choo bachang shop was here as I am a huge fan of them! There were 7 of us and most of us ended up getting either the dumplings or their tarts and others that most of us just can't resist! Their mini dumplings were good besides my usual buy which was the hokkien bachang with salted egg yolk. Yum! continue reading
