A household name in Singapore, Bengawan Solo is synonymous with traditional cakes and kueh made using the highest quality ingredients and time-honoured methods of preparation. Special occasions are not the same without Bengawan Solo’s signature treats such as Kueh Lapis Sagu (rainbow layer cake), Ondeh Ondeh (coconut-coated glutinous rice balls filled with molten palm sugar), Kueh Lapis (spiced layer cake), and butter cakes and cookies. Was craving for yam snow skin mooncake from Lavender (which is in Malaysia) but I couldn't find it in SG anymore as they use to bring in. And I see the very similar one is from Bengawan Solo so I bought one piece ($9.50) just to ease my craving. The yam filling within the mooncake was very soft and the skin was very soft too and the combination with a egg yolk inside was very nice. Sweet and salty at the same time when you bite it, simply amazing! continue reading

love all the kuehs from bengawan solo. everything is so perfectly made and so traditional and authentic. not too sweet and not sickeningly rich. the ingredients always taste very fresh. very high quality but also at very high price. seems to be the most expensive kueh shop in singapore at the moment. but also the best! love their ambon. saves me the trouble of making it and it is so well-made. highly recommended. wish their baked kueh lapis was cut bigger as their tiny slice is not satisfying. continue reading

My boyfriend and I attended his grandmother's birthday celebration and this was the cake that everyone got for her! A blackforest cake from Bengawan Solo. The cake was visually pretty to the eyes. I like the deep strong pink and that it is decorated with berries; strawberries and blueberries. Just like any blackforest cake, it tasted like a mix of chocolate and cherries! Although some blackforest cakes do contain liquors (such as rum, which is common in Austrian recipes), I doubt this one did judging by the taste.Nevertheless, yummy. continue reading

Seem like my little gal is just like me when I was young. My father used to buy this for me when I am a little gal and I love to eat it by peeling layer after layer. Now my little gal follows suit. I think she's also quite choosy when it comes to eating this "layer kuey". She only likes the one from bengawan solo, as the layering is rather thin. So she wouldn't be too full after comsuming. And that is rather important to me as I do not have to finish her unfinished food again! continue reading
