Over the weekend I have came to this Chinese restaurant with a group of my fellow ex-classmates to have a big feast here. Surprisely, this restaurant was quite quiet and not too crowded, unlike the usual Chinese restaurant during dinner hours which are really crowded and noisy. We have ordered their signature salted yolk crabs, which indeed is really delicious. Generous amount of salted egg yolks have been used to cook this dish, which make it very fragrant and not too salty. The seafood fried noodles is also equally delicious. Chewy noodles with lots of fresh crunchy prawns and chewy lean meats in it. It is very flavourful and not too oily. Stir fried bitter gourd is not too bitter and full of the egg fragrant in it as well. A lovely meal and good service is provided here as well. continue reading

We went for the chef’s recommendations to play safe, if the best dishes can’t do well, probably you can’t put too much hope on the rest. Hokkien Noodles: The traditional KL version came with big fat noodles and plenty of sweet sauce with lots of pork lard. When the dish was served, my daughter instantly suffered drawback symptom, and she refused to take a bite describing why we ordered a plate of cooked fat earthworm! The noodles were sweet in taste and perhaps too sweet that taste nothing but a plate of sweet noodles. Beancurd with pumpkin sauce: Presented in a alluring manner but the pumpkin was hard and not soft to the bite. Seasoning was mild and a light dish that will please those health conscious.Wasabi prawn: Beautiful presentation and the prawn was fresh and springy, it was lightly coated with the mixture of wasabi and mayonnaise, topped with the crispy extra fine vermicelli that accentuated the flavourful of this signature dish. This is one of the salivating and excellent dishes that cannot be missed when dining here.Crab with salted egg: The house specialty is crab and naturally a must order dish when you are here. The crab was perfectly cooked; the meat was easily detached from the shell and firm, it went well with salted egg gravy. Crispy roll: A filling made up of fish paste and shrimp, wrapped in a paper thin beancurd skin and deep fried to a perfect crisp exterior, dipped into the mayonnaise and truly succulent to the taste buds. For full review and more photos, please visit www.ieatandeat.com continue reading

Despite this being rather out of the way, do not be discouraged. Gems must be unearthed and this one is good. There wasn't a dish we didn’t like when we went that day. We ordered bright kang kong stir-fried simply with garlic, an appetising exposition of dark KL-style fried hokkien noodles, and claypot tofu (very smooth) with ground meat.Their recommended specialties: a fried tofu topped with a golden pumpkin sauce and fried enoki plus a flat pancake of beancurd skin wrapped around some seafood paste are worth trying. continue reading

photos and more here: http://andmorefood.wordpress.com/2013/04/15/big-eater-restaurant-changi/fantastic seafood and zi char at this casual chinese restaurant nearish the singapore expo – really, it’s rather out of the way (for us), but it’s now become my family’s go-to place for crabs and the like, and well-worth travelling to. the place has been packed to the rafters even by early evening (we popped here on two consecutive sundays because it was so good) – but the prices are reasonable, the food is absolutely commendably executed, and service is both sincere and quick.having spent a few years away, I’ve gained newfound appreciation for places like this one – where you can viably decide not to cook and pay a little more for a balanced meal: this isn’t really an option you often get in london – not such variety at equivalent prices, anyway.the food here is great – and it draws large crowds despite occupying two shop spaces in an obscure location, so I recommend reservations, and also that you head down for a spot of great seafood no matter where you are. it beats those too-crowded options at the east coast – you know which ones I mean – in price, service and quality. continue reading
