At one corner of Woodlands Civic Centre almost hidden from view by Jollibean, you can find a small, quaintly decorated kiosk aptly titled "Kopi Alley". My mum and I thought of getting some toast to takeaway when we realized that they actually have tables inside the small space next to the kiosk, which made use of the narrow space by decorating it to look like a narrow alley with wooden tables and chairs on a faux road! We decided to take a short tea break in this "alley" instead. Like other stores like Ya Kun and Toast Box, Kopi Alley also sells a range of Traditional Toasts, Thick Toast and Soft Bun like Butter Kaya Toast ($1.60) and Peanut Butter Toast ($1.60). For those with a sweet tooth, there is also a "must try" Chocolate & Chopped Nuts Traditional Toast, Thick Toast or Soft Bun ($1.60). There is also a variety of Cream Crackers like Butter & Jam Crackers ($1.40), which looks quite interesting. You can also find other local delights such as Mee Siam ($3.50), Chwee Kueh ($1.80 for 4 pieces) and Pau like Tau Sar Pau ($0.80) or Teriyaki Chicken Pau and Honey Chicken Pau ($1.00). Drink-wise, there are hot drinks like Kopi O ($1.00), Milo ($1.50) and Crysanthemum Tea ($1.20), while cold drinks range from Iced Kopi ($1.70) to Iced Honey Lemon ($2.30) to Milo Dinosaur ($2.60). There is even a Japanese Azuki Red Bean Latte Iced Blend ($3.20). Quite a variety for a little store in the alley!Since we were only here for tea, we opted for a few basic items only.Kopi O ($1.00)This was quite aromatic but a tad too bitter for both my mum and myself. Kaya Toast ($1.60)This was actually Butter Kaya Toast but we asked to just have the kaya which the staff was willing to accommodate. The toast was quite crispy and the kaya had just the right amount of sweetness. My mum gave the thumb up for their kaya, which she liked for the strong pandan taste. Honey Chicken Pau ($1.00)The pau was a little small but it was quite soft and the chicken filling was quite tender and tasty. Overall this was pretty decent and reasonable for only $1.00!Mee Siam ($3.50)We bought this home to share with the rest of the family. This came with a whole hard-boiled egg, a generous serving of taupok cubes and vermicelli. This was pretty spicy and sweet but we agreed that it wasn't sour enough. But I liked the taupok cubes which was quite tasty after soaking in the gravy!Overall, I think the pau and toasts here are quite decent and I wouldn't mind coming back to this alley again to try the other items on the menu. Service was also quite decent and the prices are also reasonable and on par with other similar stores like Toast Box. The concept of a "Kopi Alley" with its somewhat old-school decor is another pulling factor. In fact, my mum even suggested coming again for tea another time to try the chwee kueh here! continue reading
