Additional Information
Offering a quaint setting and atmosphere, National Geographic Café is located in a tranquil setting amidst the hustle and bustle of the crowd in VivoCity. The café serves pinchos, which originated in the Basque region of Spain. A relatively new concept in the local food scene, pinchos are traditionally served in small portions, using fresh, natural and healthy ingredients. Adhering to this concept, the café minimizes its use of condiments like sugar and salt in preparation of its food and beverages to provide the maximum health benefit garnered from each ingredient. Having read positive reviews about National Geographic Cafe from HGW, I made a visit to try it out for myself.National Geographic occupies a large space at L1 of vivocity where it showcases an art exhibition, a cafe and you can get apparels, luggages, footware… anything related to National Geographic can be found here. It is also National Geographic’s first retail store in Asia. The cafe occupies a small area where you can enjoy Pinchos ( Spanish Tapas) by Chef Miguel Espinosa. The Pinchos are all small portions thus I ordered a few pinchos to try it. Some of the popular choices are ” Classic spanish tortilla”, ” the Smoked salmon on potato puree” and ” Mini Beef burger with caramelised onions and fries”.Tuna & Pepper salad ($6)Canned tuna flakes were used instead of fresh tuna. This is something that anyone can prepare it at home.Smoked salmon on Potato puree top with pineapple carpaccio ($6)This is another popular pincho of NG cafe. The thinly sliced smoked salmon were arranged neatly on top of a pineapple carpaccio and laid on potato puree. The potato puree was too salty. The smoked salmon itself goes pretty well with the pineapple carpaccio & I felt the potato puree just spoils the whole dish.Grilled scallops on shell with baby vegetables ($8.50)Where are the scallops shell? The scallops were served warm or cool, the temperature control has some problem. The sauce which is served along taste weird too which I can’t make out what it was. The baby vegetables ( carrots and broccoli ) were crunchy but again, neither warm nor cool.White asparagus from Nirvana with light mayo ($6)They have the white asparagus even though it is not in season. 3 Asparagus spears were sliced into halved, light blanched and drizzled with light mayo. The white asparagus was very soft and sweet, I do not even need to chew ( just swallow). This is the best pinchos that I had ordered.Chicken & Veg skewer ($5.50)The chicken was marinated with some herbs and spices before grilling. I like the strong aroma of the herbs but the pieces of capsicum were burnt!Verdict: Out of the few pinchos I have tried, my personal favorites are the White asparagus & Grilled chicken & veg, the rest were unmemorable . Recommended place to enjoy pinchos in a cool ambience and the food are served in petite portions. No GST/ SVC charge here, all prices are nett. continue reading
