A household name in Singapore, Bengawan Solo is synonymous with traditional cakes and kueh made using the highest quality ingredients and time-honoured methods of preparation. Special occasions are not the same without Bengawan Solo’s signature treats such as Kueh Lapis Sagu (rainbow layer cake), Ondeh Ondeh (coconut-coated glutinous rice balls filled with molten palm sugar), Kueh Lapis (spiced layer cake), and butter cakes and cookies. Today was only Christmas Day and Bengawan Solo already started selling Chinese New Year pastry! The staff recommended the Mini Peanut Puff which was freshly delivered from their main bakery today. Hence I bought a box of Mini Peanut Puff at $13.80. I felt the price was slightly expensive. The Mini Peanut Puff tasted good and fresh. The size of the Peanut Puff made eating easy, just pop into mouth like eating M&M. There was no oily after-taste or aroma. The puff was very crispy. The filling inside was crushed peanut with sugar which had just the right sweetness.  continue reading

Begawang solo is a nonya style confectionary which sells many kuehs and traditional kuehs that are hard to find nowadays. The pandan kaya cake is one of my favorites for its unique taste and texture. The cake itself is soft fluffy and cottony with a nice pandan flavour. The kaya topping is really good too being smooth and tasty with a good strong coconut and pandan taste. Overall worth a try! continue reading

Bengawang solo is one of the few places left in Singapore that sells traditional cakes snacks and kuehs. I really like their kuehs which are always consistently good and tasty. The kuehs made fresh are mostly good but one that stands out for me is the ondeh ondeh! They are so much fun to eat, bursting in your mouth when you bite into them! The skins are not too thick too with a good proportion of gula Melaka to skin ratio. continue reading
