With the recent trend of artisan bread bakeries sprouting out around the island, it's only a matter of time that the 'hip and happening' side of Chinatown have one. Bread & Hearth is the latest to join the fray @ Keong Sailk street! A lovely and cosy interior greets you as you enter the bakery/cafe. While not as extensive as some of the larger artisan bakery establishments, it does have quite a decent variety of bread and tart choices. The comfortable interior decor was complimented with good music played in the background through their Bose sound system. I'm a music buff, so that's a major plus point to me! Makes a good 'hideout' on a sweltering hot afternoon as well. As it was my first time there, I had difficulty deciding on what to order. So I went by my rule of thumb: When in doubt, go for the croissant. In my humble opinion, if a bakery's acid test is the classic croissant. If the plain butter croissant is well made, it means that the baker knows his/her stuff. So I went for a butter croissant with my usual beverage of choice; a cappuccino. The coffee was decent enough. Could be a tad smoother though. As for the croissant, I was thoroughly impressed! Crisp on the outside, while soft inside. The light tinge of buttery fragrance and flavor was evident. Definitely going back to try their other bakes!!  continue reading

Keong Saik Road had recently seen a few quite interesting openings, such as Afterglow, Muchachos and most recently Potato Head Folk. Opened barely a week when we visited, Bread & Hearth is an artisan bakery that bakes their bread fresh in-store everyday. Their menu consists of tarts, freshly-baked bread and sandwiches, serving organic cola/lemonade, coffee and Gryphon teas for beverages. The Matcha Orange soft roll ($2.80) caught our attention as it was a daring attempt of putting two ingredients rarely matched together. It went to be rather fine, as the Matcha flavour was really light on the palate while it included some orange bits to chew on for a bit of citric zest to tantalize the tastebuds. The downside was however the soft roll itself; a wee bit dry and dense that it was rather hard to swallow.Only one tart was available, and it was the Salted Caramel Tarte ($6.00). Coming with a generous amount of Macademia nuts, they provided a great break for the heavy scorched flavour of the caramel. I was fine with how it tasted, but the sticky and gooey salted caramel was too heavy for my dining partner to handle. Tart base was rather cookie-like; a wee bit hard to cut without trying to attract too much attention from surrounding diners. Due to how heavy it tasted, it probably be good to share this with one or two more friends. They were very secretive with their coffee beans used for their coffee here; the cashier was telling me that she thought it was imported from Italy and asked the barista to find out more, only to return with an answer that they use their “own” blend for their coffee. No matter what it is though, the Flat White ($5.00) had a pretty medium body that had nutty and chocolatey tones. For more photos and the full review, please visit: http://jiaksimipng.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/bread-hearth-keong-saik-road/ continue reading
