A Gastronomic Experience at Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant
2011-01-24
“Are you willing to try out the Yuan Yang Duck Tongue?” It was the first question our host asked Priscilla and I as we settled in our seats to try out the latest offerings at Nanxiang restaurant’s newest branch in Plaza Singapura. Apparently, it’s a delicacy in China that is also a popular dish for foodies here in Singapore. Honestly, I was a bit hesitant to try this out, but all I could reply was, “It’s all part of the job, right?” And so, the waiter came out with two versions: braised and poached.
"Yuan Yang" Duck Tongue ($8)
The first bite for me was a bit scary. However, it wasn’t bad! Both versions were crunchy, although I preferred the poached one because it had more flavour, as compared to the braised duck tongue which was just sour. Next up was the "Hua Niang" Steamed Cod Fish, which I definitely enjoyed because the fish meat was so soft, it just seems to crumble in my mouth. As for their new dish, Jelly Fish with Spicy Vinegar, it was a bit too spicy for my taste. But for all spicy lovers out there, this is a must-try!

Crab Roe & Pork Filling Steamed Bun ($11.80- 6 pieces), Shrimp & Pork Filling Steamed Bun ($7.80- 6 pieces), Fresh Pork Filling Steamed Bun ($6- 6 pieces), Spicy Crabmeat & Pork Filling Steamed Bun ($11.80- 6 pieces)
Nanxiang restaurant is known for having many versions of xiao long bao, and I was more than happy that I would get to taste four versions of it: Fresh Pork Filling Steamed Bun, Spicy Crabmeat & Pork Filling Steamed Bun, Crab Roe & Pork Filling Steamed Bun, and the Shrimp & Pork Filling Steamed Bun. All were very meaty and the juice just oozed out of the dumpling as soon as I took a bite! All had very rich taste, but I felt like the pork dumpling was a tad too salty.
King Sized Nanxiang Crab Roe Steamed Soup Bun ($6.80)
If ever you decide to visit Nanxiang restaurant, I recommend that you try their King-Sized Nanxiang Crab Roe Steamed Soup Bun. It’s a soup with bits of crab meat that you sip with a straw from a bun. This was definitely the highlight of the whole course as the soup was just oozing with flavour. Other highlights were the Braised Pork Belly Ribs, Steamed Egg with Clams, and the Stir-Fried Green Bean Noodle with Crab Roe. Now that we were done with the main course, it was now time for desserts, which is always my favorite part of the dining experience. We were given two varieties to try out: the Golden Pumpkin Cake and the Yam Pastry with Sesame. The golden pumpkin was very airy inside, but that didn’t change the fact that it was soft and delicious. The yam was OK for me, as it was so sticky and I had a hard time swallowing it. All in all, my Nanxiang restaurant dining experience was something to remember as it was the first time I tried some authentic Shanghai cuisine. Will I go back there? For the xiao long baos and their infamous crab roe steamed soup bun, I definitely will! Have you tried any of their dishes, too? If you have, share with us what you think by writing your own review about it. -- Address: 200 Victoria Street, 02-53 Bugis Junction Tel. No: 6835 7577 Try out other local favorite dishes!
