A Novus Experience
2011-03-17
Dining at Novus Restaurant is definitely an experience. Nestled within the walls of the 124-year old National Museum at Stamford Road, this European restaurant is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate! If you don’t know what I mean, why don’t you drop by for a visit and be mesmerized by its modern decor which features contemporary furniture from Paul Smith and Jasper Morrison. In a place where everything is just so historical, Novus Restaurant breathes life and color to this 124-year-old museum. Take a look around also notice how spacious the interior is, thanks to the strategically placed mirrors on the walls and ceiling! Surely, their impressive wine display at the bar will catch your fancy. Craving for some champagne? Enjoy a glass or two at their main dining room or for some privacy, in their courtyard. But of course, their menu is still the highlight of this whole Novus experience. Specially crafted by Head Chef Stephan Zoisl, his creations are inspired from his 8-month sabbatical spent globe-trotting across Europe and Southeast Asia. According to Zoisl, the highlight of his journey was apprenticing at The Fat Duck, the notable restaurant in England which has consistently been in the list of the Top 3 Best Restaurants in the World.
Upon recommendation, I had the Shellfish Bisque ($24). The way they serve it to you is that they pour the soup onto the dish containing the scallops, prawns, and crabmeat raviolini. The scent was just heavenly and it was just what I needed to kick start my taste buds. I enjoyed every bite of the scallops, prawns, and cravmeat raviolini because they were very soft and meaty. As for my main course, I ordered the Hickory Smoked Black Angus Beef Cheek (Set lunch at $29++ for 2 courses, $38++ for 3 courses) with baby beet, spring onion, mushroom crepe, and triple cooked French fries. Visually speaking, it was presented in such a perfect manner. The beef cheek was cooked just right, and the result was a meat that was soft that seems to crumble in your mouth. However, there was a slight bitter taste to the beef cheek so you should eat it together with the other ingredients. Even though it seemed like a small serving, it was more than enough for me.
I always want to end my meal with a dessert. But in Novus Restaurant, I had three! I was served with Chocolate Test, Mille Feuille, and the Deconstructed Mango. Even though all three desserts were stellar, the one that stood out for me was the Chocolate Test. It was composed of three types of chocolates that were served in various ways. A definite must-try for all the chocolate lovers out there! -- Novus Restaurant Address: National Museum of Singapore, 93 Stamford Road 01-02 Tel.
