Around the World at Charly T's
2011-02-22
Of all the restaurants I’ve tried out in Singapore, I must say that Charly T's is the most intriguing of them all. You wouldn’t notice it at first though because on first look, it just seems like your average restaurant that serves a variety of delectable dishes. But on closer inspection, you’ll find out that each dish has a unique story to tell. On the day that I dined at Charly T's for OpenRice’s ORTU session, I was lucky to have been joined by selected OpenRicers as well as Steven Lee, the restaurant’s marketing manager. Before we sampled the dishes they had in store for us, he first told us the story of Charly, the food lover who traveled the world and brought all of his favorite dishes to Singapore. Charly is a person who migrated to Germany when he was a kid and that was where he discovered his passion for foodie. As he grew older, he hopped from one country to another to sample some of their best delicacies. After his intricate food journey, he came back to Singapore to give us a taste of his yummy discoveries.
Spanish Omelet with Dilly Bread
The first thing that we tried out was their Spanish Omelet with dilly bread, which was available for breakfast during the weekends. Too bad it’s not available every day, because it tasted really good. It wasn’t your typical omelet because it had a slight spicy flavor just enough to get my taste buds started. The dilly bread with cream cheese was the perfect companion for the breakfast dish.
Bratwurst and Sauerkat Wrap ($16), Sesame Teriyaki Chicken Wrap with Butter Garlic Rice ($12.50)
After breakfast, we were then served with their main wraps: Bratwurst and Sauerkat Wrap with German Potato Salad, Sesame Teriyaki Chicken Wrap with Butter Garlic Rice. I’m not a fan of wraps since they can be a bit messy to eat, but these two dishes just looked too delicious to pass up. So, armed with my knife and fork, I took a slice and just savoured every bite of these meat dishes! It was a good thing that these dishes were followed by the salads: the Avocado Dijon Chicken Salad and the New Orleans Beef Salad. I must say that their ingredients really tasted fresh, but I didn’t quite enjoy these two very much because I still preferred my meat!
Rotisserie Chicken (whole, $42), Kalua Pork ($16), Kampong Amber Sticks ($13.5)
And like an answered prayer, they served their infamous Rotisserie Chicken, Kalua Pork, and the Kampong Amber Sticks next. The first thing I tried was the Kalua Pork. Made with three layers of just pure pork on a stick, it kind of fell short of my expectation. For me, it could’ve been cooked more so that it would be easier to chew. Next one I tasted was the roasted chicken, and I just adored every bite. The meat was just bursting with flavour from all the spices they used to marinate it. The Kampong sticks were pleasant and it went well with all the 9 sauces they served with the dishes. Charly T's was generous enough to let us try all their side dishes too. I was quite full at this time already, so I was only able to taste their Roasted Potatoes and the Mac and Cheese. The latter stood out because it didn’t have the cheese that I expected from this side dish. Nonetheless, it is still a must-try.
Chocolate Waffle with melted chocolate chips ($7)
After a couple of dishes, it was now time for dessert: Cheesecake and Brownies. They were a bit dry because I think it’s supposed to be eaten with their home-made ice cream. They also made us try their chocolate waffle with melted chocolate chips and syrup, and I was so happy they did. It was crispy on the outside and soft inside, and I enjoyed every bite of it thoroughly. (Please note the that the waffle was just a tasting portion.) Over all, my dining experience at Charly T's was very educational in the sense that I was able to try out so many dishes around the world in just one sitting. I know that he still has so many new and delectable dishes in store for me, and I can’t wait to come back for more! Do check out the video of our ORTU at Charly T's:
