Lunch at the Palace
2011-02-17
Being in Singapore for quite a while now, I’ve kind of developed a taste for Chinese cuisine. And so, it was to my luck that I was invited to have lunch at The Regent Hotel’s famed Cantonese restaurant, Summer Palace. Having read rave reviews about it, I just couldn’t wait to see for myself if Summer Palace really is the place to be for the finest Cantonese dishes.
Dim Sum Platter, $14 per person
On the day that I went there for lunch, the menu was quite impressive. It featured some of the chefs' latest creations as well as some of their well-loved dishes. I started my culinary journey with the Dim Sum Platter of Baked Chicken Tart with Baby Abalone, Shrimp Dumpling with Bird’s Nest, and the Deep Fried Yam with Garoupa. I first tried the one with the abalone, and I liked how they managed to make it really soft and chewy! It’s also moist, so it just added to the overall taste. Next up was the shrimp dumpling which also thrilled me due to its striking flavor. The yam was just OK for me, it wasn’t too impressive plus most of it just stuck to my teeth. I washed it down with water, then braised myself for the next course: the Braised Minced Crabmeat and Green Spinach Soup.
Braised Minced Crabmeat and Green Spinach Soup, $14 per person
For me, the soup didn’t look that appetizing. It was just too green for me, but yeah, it’s because it’s made of pureed spinach leaves topped with shredded crab meat. When I tasted it, the spinach just overpowered the crab flavor too much. It could’ve used more crabs. But the good thing about this dish is that it’s very healthy!
Appetizer Selection, $26 per person

Before serving the main dish, we were served with an appetizer selection which started with the Suckling Pig Stuffed with Minced Shrimp and Almond Flakes. It just reminded me of my home country’s infamous lechon, otherwise known as roasted pig. The pig skin at the bottom was just crispy and tasty! It was topped with the meatiest shrimp and almond flakes. The Prawns and Seafood Paste Wrapped with Crispy Shreds also struck my palate as it was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
East Star Garoupa Fillet with Soya Bean Paste, $128 per fish (800g)

Now, time for the main course: the East Star Garoupa Fillet with Soya Bean Paste. I heard that this is one of their most popular dishes so I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into this dish which just looked so appetizing. Upon one bite, I just melted with how soft and tasty the meat was. Its taste was enhanced more by the sauce and the vegetables served together with the dish. I just had one word for it: SCRUMPTIOUS.
Chilled Double Boiled Pear with Chinese Herbs, $8 per person

As my lunch came to a close, I was served with the traditional dessert of Chilled Double Boiled Pear with Chinese Herbs. It was quite a unique dessert as it was tasty and at the same time, is good for you. The sweetness was just to my liking, and the pear that went with it was so soft and chewy! Overall, my dining experience at Summer Palace was such complete delight in a way that I got to try out new dishes from the Cantonese cusine. I’d definitely go back there to try out more of their offerings! -- Address: 1 Cuscaden Road, Level 3 Tel.
