Tasty little pauSmile

There is a long queue of people at this stall when I reach the place. And most have huge orders. For example the guy in front has ordered 12 lotus pasta pau and 12 steamed meat pau. With such long queue, there is only 2 staffs serving the customers and another one busy making the pau at the back.Stewed pork / Bian pau 扁包 ($0.60)
It is the first I have a stewed pau that is so small. Can nicely fit into the mouth. The pork is shredded into pulled pork form, very tender and flavourful but I feel it is a bit dry.Roasted pork / Char Siew pau 叉烧包 ($0.60)
Unlike the usual red coloured char siew, here it looks a natural brown and in a quite finely chopped texture. Steamed meat (small) / Xiao Rou pau 小肉包 ($0.60)
Steamed meat (big) / Da Rou pau 大肉包 ($1.20)
The meat filling tastes quite lean. A bit disappointed as there is no egg in the big steamed pau.Chicken meat / Ji Rou pau 鸡肉包 ($1.20)
The meat filling is very finely minced, and tastes quite juicy, unlike the usual the fatty filling.Red bean paste / Dou Sha pau 豆沙包 ($0.60)
The red bean paste is not too sweet.Longevity (Lotus paste) / Shou Tao 寿桃 ($0.60)
Lotus paste / Lian Rong pau ($0.60)
Both have lotus paste filling, but must be real good because after grandmother has the lotus paste pau, she also has the Longevity pau, giving some reason that Longevity pau is for old people. Steamed chicken (glutinous) / Luo Mai Kai 糯米鸡 ($1.20)
The rice is quite flavourful, topped with the juicy chicken slices.Pork dumpling / Siew Mai 烧卖 ($0.60)
This tastes quite average.

Overall the pau are delicious and have quite thin skin. Except that the pau are quite small in size, even for the big steamed pau.

Fresh and nice mini hand made pau Just OK

The milky white miniature pau are lovely and cute, with every little pau being bite sized. If you are thinking of buying the pau to fill your hunger, you will probably need quite a number of the little pau to pacify your growling tummy.
Teochew Handmade Pau offers various pau with different fillings. We ordered the more popular one which includes the Stewed pork kou rou pau扁包 / 扣肉包, roasted pork char siew pau叉烧包, Lotus paste / Lian Rong pau莲蓉包, Red bean paste / Dou Sha pau豆沙包.

What we like about the pau was the thin skin and the fine texture, as well as the fact that it is daily freshly made pau that’s right out from the steamer. The Lotus paste and red bean paste were very fine and smooth, taste wise was above average. However, the roasted pork char siew pau was kind of lacking of the much needed juices and taste, it could have better seasoned and infused more fat from the minced pork. The stewed pork kou rou pau was made from the lean meat and same as the char siew, the kou rou pau was too dry and you can’t taste the fatty belly pork oozing out from the bit which was a pity of the pau. May be it is the intention to prepare the filling in a leaner manner to project a healthier image of the pau.

Tiny BaoSmile

If you are not very full after a meal and feel like eating something with a small serving, this is the something that will suit you. The bao is only about 4cm in diameter. You can finish it up in 1 mouth. It cost 60 cents for 1 bao and there have quite a lot of varieties to choose from. Any flavour that you can find in a normal sized bao, you can find them here. Queuing can be rather long at times as some customers order a few boxes at a go. So be prepared to wait….

Siew Mai & Fan ChoiSmile

This handmade dimsum stall at Toa Payoh Food Centre always had a long queue during their opening times.

Since it was lunch time, I had ordered Fan Choi and Siew Mai instead of Buns as they are more stomach filling.

The Fan Choi was good. The rice was very moist with char siew sauce. The Char Siew was sweet and slightly fatty taste. There was also a quarter egg but I hope they put more.

The Siew Mai was very fatty. It had many minced fatty pork. The taste of the meat was very well marinated and seasoned.

In this small stall at the second level of the market and food centre, selling a variety of paus and simple dim sum such Siew Mai and char Siew rice. There is always never ending queue at the stall. One could see the 3 staffs busy making and serving the customers.
The red bean pau costs $0.60 each and is very small in size which one can easily finished in one two mouthfuls. It tastes quite soft and not too sweet.
