Feels like going back in time when I first stepped into this cozy restaurant located at 44 Kandahar Street. The restaurant is fully decorated with vintage stuff. The vegetable is well stir fry and delicious. The cold tofu is normal and I think it is not worth the price.

We made a reservation for 8 for a birthday dinner, and it was still pretty early by the time we arrived at 7pm. The restaurant was still relatively empty which was a surprise because my last visit here during lunch was s completely different experience. There was a long queue and it was an half-hour wait.

Nevertheless, we got a cosy seat by the corner of the second floor, divided by oriental style room dividers. And one thing that I really appreciate about Bumbu is the effort that goes into the decor. It's nothing like the Neo-vintage design which many cafes are based on, but a more local and nostalgic touch to it. Its an experience tha can only be found in Singapore or perhaps other parts of Asia.

But the interior decor isn't the main buzz, and Its been awhile since I've been to places where it's more about the food than it is the ambience. The menu came and everyone was excited to order their personal favourite. I often enjoy asking the waiters what they would recommend bello placing my order, and they highly recommended the Tahu Telor, and Indonesian egg tofu dish. Best choice.

Apart from that, the other dish which was a pleasant find was the Crispy Kang Kong. Kang kong is often cooked with sambal, but no one could have imagined it to taste so good when it is deep fried. It's uncommon, but not impossible to find. I have had it twice before at various Thai restaurants, but this would be the best that I have had in Singapore thus far. The secret lies in the tangy shrimp sauce bedding all that delicious fried greens!

Interestingly enough, I do notice that it is really the sauce that determines if the dish makes the cut. I have had 2 other types of sauces with fried kang kong that are completely different, but this is my favourite thus far. The other two were a cream-based sauce, very much like dips, which didn't bring out the flavour as much.

The desserts were delicious as well, but you can't really go wrong with durian sticky rice and chendol. I wouldn't say they are the best but they are decent enough to create that cherry on top of a perfectly good meal aftertaste.

We were immediately greet by the Peranakan style decoration. The place itself was not crowded so it was easy for us to take photos. We were served by a friendly staff and given a menu to order. We order the mini Spring Rolls, sliced fish with chilli, seafood with egg salad, kangkong with chilli and served it with rice . All these dishes were nice but nothing special about it especially the kangkong taste like what you can get in the zu chao hawaker centre. And our 2nd order we order this Gado Gado to our suprise it was really good it taste of rojak with plently of peanut on top . It was really nice we has the impluse to order a 2nd serving but the portion was quite big and we were quite full so we decided not to waste food if we cannnot finish it. We enjoy our meal and the staff were really friendly will visit there again of have the chance.

Walking into the 2 storey pre-war house is like stepping back into a bygone era. The restaurant is decorated with antique furniture and artifacts everywhere as if it is a antique museum. The Indo Thai restaurant offers both ala carte and buffet on their menu. We went for the buffet which cost $16.80+ per adult and $8.40+ for children under 10 years old.

There were about 23 mains and 16 desserts/drinks on the buffet menu.

Unlike the usual Tahu Telor that is served in one big piece, the Tahu (Tofu) here came in small pieces. It looked mediocre but it was really very good. The Tahu was very soft and smooth.

What a weird combination of Seafood and Fried Egg as a salad dish. The Seafood Fried Egg Salad was served in a lime sauce with a tad of spiciness that married both the seafood and fried egg into a delightful salad.

Gado Gado is a typical Indonesia dish whereby vegetables are served in peanut sauce. I don't fancy the dish because I find it weird to eat vegetable in peanut sauce. Nevertheless, the peanut sauce itself was really nutty and flavourful.

The Steam Fish Spicy Lime Sauce was simple, fresh and nice. The boneless fish slices were not too spicy for the kids and they enjoyed it.

I find the Fried Fish Slice House Chilli was rather pedestrian. The house chilli did not manage to wow me.

Bumbu supposed to be a Indo Thai restaurant and I really not sure why the Sweet Sour Chicken dish is on the menu although they substitute pork with chicken since it is a Halal restaurant.

The Stir Fry Prawn with Egg has a nice fluffy and creamy texture. It was the kids favourite dish.

I think Sambal Kangkong is my favourite vegetable dish. I realized I usually order it when I dine outside. The belacan chilli infused with the kangkong was really shiok. It was not overcooked with a tad of crunchiness that I like.

I was a bit disappinted with the Black Pepper Beef. The beef was a bit rubbery which did not justify for the flavourful black pepper sauce.

You don't often get to find Cold Tofu with Preserved Egg served at restaurant. I remembered the first time I tried this dish in Taiwan and I fell in love with it. The cold tofu was tasteless but paired with preserved egg, salted egg and sauce, it just turned into a very beautiful dish.

The Mini Spring Roll surprised all of us. The restaurant used Otak for the spring roll's filling! It is an interesting and unique combination. The spring roll was fried perfectly with a nice colouring and the skin was very crispy.

You may realized I did not post any dessert pictures. We were so full that we could not eat anymore desserts!

After an unpleasant meal at Eighteen Chefs (Yishun) and an unpleasant steak at Badoque (Simpang Bedok), there were high expectations for Bumbu since it was strongly recommended by a fellow colleague of mine and myself. Fortunately, it did not disappoint at all and the meal was not only great but priced reasonably as well around 510 SGD for 22 people after GST and Service Charge.

This time round, the dishes that did well the previous visit continued to fare well if not better such as the Tapioca with Coconut Cream (3.00 SGD) during our recent visit.
http://the4moose.blogspot.com/2010/06/sumptuous-lunch-bumbu-restaurant.html

Dishes that were new to me this time round is the Pineapple Rice (8.00 SGD), served in a halved pineapple, it was slightly sweet with seafood, raisins mixed inside, the rice was cooked nicely, not complaints.

The Olive Fried Rice (8.00 SGD) was flavourful and has a wholesome herbal, Southeast Asian flavour. It came with cubes of lime and cashew nuts something different for me.

Thumbs up for the flavoursome Tom Yum Seafood (8.80 SGD), extremely rich in flavour and equally spicy, despite being a non-spicy eater, I cannot deny that the Tom Yum soup smelt and tasted really good.

The Green Curry Chicken (8.80 SGD) has a rich coconut flavour that goes very well with the free flow of steamed rice (1.20 SGD per person). The chicken was very tender and the gravy was addictive.

Cashew Nut Chicken (9.80 SGD) was quite good in terms of both flavour and texture, it was very tender and the sauce is similar to a good, slightly spicy Asian style BBQ sauce with some cashew nuts being mixed in it to provide some crunch, but there wasn’t much of a cashew nut flavour from the chicken though.

Stir Fried Squid in Black Sauce (11.80 SGD) was another well-executed dish. The sauce was slightly sour and sweet with a hint of spice, and the squid was not too tough, just nice.

The Pandan Leaf Chicken (3.20 SGD per piece) was a little expensive, but it was the star of the day. Crispy, crackling good fragrant chicken with a tender interior that was so juicy, it goes very well with the semi-fluid caramel sauce that was served in a petite jar. We had seconds if not thirds of this addictive finger-licking good chicken.

The Ice Chendol (3.00 SGD) was considered above average but still loses to the ones in Malaysia. Praises were given for its soft attap sead though.

The Tapioca with Coconut Cream (3.00 SGD) was better as an ala carte item. This time round there were more coconut cream and from the colour you can tell how good the tapioca was. The natural sweetness from the tapioca can be tasted and the coconut cream wasn’t too much or too thick to overpower the tapioca.

In the end, I enjoyed my meal at Bumbu. This is definitely one place I will bring my halal friends to. I must really compliment the great service by the management and waiting staff as well as they had been very friendly, meticulous, helpful throughout the dinner and they took the initiatives to make the experience a pleasant one by offering explanations for the food items and asking us whether we want to replenish rice, simply put, service did not stop after ordering.
