Chilli Crab Sambal Stingray

We were super lucky to meet the owner Chef Joe and even had a quick chat with him. Friendly and down-to-earth, he shared his passion for making spices using the secret recipe inherited from his parents. Their homemade sauces really elevated all the dishes we tried: The sweet and spicy sauce was like a flavour party to our taste buds - there were hints of egg, ketchup and even ginger flower! Besides complementing the fresh crab, it also went really well with a bowl of white rice, but the real Singaporean way is to pair with fried mantous! This was my first time trying stingray and the unique meat texture totally caught me off guard - it kind of melted in my mouth, but was still firm at the same time. A bit spicy, but still highly recommended! Crispy, juicy, tender - would you believe me if I told you that I ate 5 pieces all by myself? P.S. Although they have been around since 1985, Joe told us they only moved to this new location a year ago after closing their previous store which was frequented by many celebrities.  continue reading

My family used to love Rong Guang when it was at Alexandra village- since it moved, we've tried it twice at gluttons by the bay.. Unfortunately, it seems that the standard has dropped significantly. In our latest trip, we ordered a large sambal stingray, Ngoh hiang (deep fried prawn rolls) and a fried Kai lan. The nicest dish of the night was the vegetables and this speaks volumes. Stingray seemed to have shrunk and only the surface sambal was hot, the insides were cold - one wonders if they'd even bothered to heat up the hot plate. Certainly didn't sizzle like it did before in Alexandra village. Prawn rolls were edible but over fried. Look around the tables at gluttons by the bay and you'll realise that a lot of tourists are having this stalls Chilli crab instead. Not sure if the stall promotes it instead but we really miss the good ol' yummy stingray of before. continue reading

The FoodI ordered Sambal Stingray and a plate of their Signature Noodles. The Sambal Stingray is superb and the sambal chilli is spicy and very tasty. The stingray is BBQ till the meat is nice and juicy. The sambal chilli sauce goes extremely well with the stingray but it can be quite spicy for those who do not take spicy food. Their Signature Noodles looks and tastes like Hokkien Mee but the only difference is that they added fresh clams into the dish. The noodle is delicious as it has absorbed the goodness of the seafood ingredients like prawns, sotong, eggs, bean sprouts and clams. The sambal chilli which they used for the Singray also complements well with the noodles, enhancing more flavour and spiciness to the dish! The PriceReasonably priced at $20++ for the whole billOverallI find that the food is pretty good and for BBQ lovers out there, you can check out this place! continue reading

I ordered their seafood fried rice & it have the wok hei flavour with their sambal belacan that goes with the rice perfectly. For side dish we ordered sambal sotong-loaded with onions ,fresh, springy & tender, not chewy or overcooked at all, pork rib-the outside was crispy yet the pork was still tender, the sauce had just the right balance of flavours. Not too sweet or sour. The dusting of sesame seeds topped off one of the best versions of this dish I’ve had in a while.Overall i rate 8/10 continue reading

A month back, I brought my friends to Rong Guang BBQ Seafood as we were craving for......SAMBAL STINGRAY! Having been there before on several occasions with my family, I decided to introduce this restaurant to my friends who are huge fans of seafood, especially stingray. The sambal stingray was served with a generous amount of sambal as well as onions and lady fingers on the top for decoration. The meat was succulent and juicy and tasted great. However I feel that the sambal could be made spicier so as to give an added kick to it.For the cost and generous portion, I would still say this is worth a try. Sambal lovers however might be a tad bit disappointed by the non-spicy sambal! continue reading
