http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/06/colbar.htmlHearing so much about Colbar for a long time, I have finally been here to Whitchurch Road. I must admit it is not an easy task to travel all the way into Wessex Village square as it is quite remote from the public transport system and even if one is driving, we have to go through some narrow roads. One thing that I is worth the travel is the nostalgic feel that really gave us the feel that we were back into the past. Walking deeper into the pavement, I felt that as though there was a tweak in the time machine, bringing us into 60s, 70s and all we saw was some foldable wooden shop doors with the rustic looking signboard. Not only that, as we entered into the cafe, we were welcome by this old school analog weighing scale.Over at the counter, you will notice a road sign with "Jalan Hang Jebat". That was actually its original location before moving to witchurch road.Even the menu looked so old school.Forget about air conditioned dining as Colbar offers dining just like time had stopped back in the 70s where such cool environments are still not so common. With the drinks accompanying the meal, I find that the amount was relatively on the high side given the pricing.Lime Juice - $4 & Strawberry Milkshake - $5.50 They serve good breakfast items. Even though we were having dinner, we decided to order sides like Tomato Omette for sharing. Egg was fluffy with slices of tomato.Pork Cutlet was lean and easy on the jaws with mushroom gravy that was on a salty side. However, such style of preparation are lesser seen in the Western Food Serving nowadays and I totally enjoy having this "home-style" cuisine.Pork Chop, Chips & Mushroom - $11Food tasted nothing extra ordinary but such food combination was nothing like what we had outside. Besides the chips, the chicken cutlet comes with a sunny side egg and Goreng Pisang (Fried Banana) which we thought was rather unusual.Chicken Maryland - $16.50Having dine in a peaceful with laidback environment, I don't mind coming back again to escape myself from the city lives. continue reading

The FoodI ordered Fish and Chips served with smooth and flaky fresh dory fish, crispy potato wedges and a lime which is quite different from other stalls which put lemon. The fish was well marinated with crispiness on the outside and inside very soft and fresh. The potato wedges were not too oily and quite crispy also. The PriceReasonably priced at $9 with decent portionOverallI will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this! continue reading

Wessex Estate is a very ulu place to go unless one drives. Now with the opening of the circle line, getting to Wessex Estate is easier now. It is a good place to get away from the busy urban life amidst in colonial buildings and greenery.Colbar which was an army canteen during the British Colony days. The rustic design and decor have not changed over the years. Colbar has an extensive menu of Asian and Western fare. It also has a good selection of imported beers. As I was not too hungry, I had the breakfast set from their all day breakfast menu. The food was slightly above average only. However it is a bit pricey for a nostalgia eatery. continue reading

Colbar, or Colonial Bar for short, was built in 1953 along Jalan Hang Jebat (off Portsdown Road) and mainly served as a canteen for soldiers who lived in the neighbouring estate which is now known as Wessex Estate. It has since relocated to a new site which is a stone's throw away from the old one and is still very popular with the expatriate community.Since my gf and I were in the area, we took the opportunity to try out their food and soak in the tranquil atmosphere, away from the maddening world outside.A serene and laid back environment close to nature and far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its really a place where time seems to have stopped, a scene from a different era.Well enough of the place. Down to the food. I ordered the Chocolate Milkshake ($4) which in my opinion, was ridiculously overpriced. It looked and tasted exactly like normal Chocolate milk ($1.50), except that it had frothy layer at the top. Talk about repackaging.Chicken Chop - This dish was as normal as it gets. Its like one of those chicken chops you eat at the hawker centre and totally forget how it tastes like the next day. The only thing I liked about this dish was that it came with button mushrooms, which I personally prefer. Other than that, the wedges were a little too soggy and very uninspiring.Fish & Chips - The old man at the counter recommended this to me and taste wise, it was not too bad. It was a little over fried though, rendering the batter a little hard and burnt. A honestly very average dish which can easily be found elsewhere. Not really worth the $9 for it.Bacon Sandwich - A total rip off kind of describes the bacon sandwich ($5). It was just two bacon strips from the oven sandwiched between 2 slices of bread with a little margarine spread across. I can make this at home for less than 50 cents!Dinner cost us $25, which is not a big sum, but totally not worth it for the quality and quantity of food. However, factor in the surroundings and maybe the vote might tilt. Nice place to hang out, but watch out for the mosquitoes. Also, please note that there is no air conditioning no matter where you seat. continue reading

I must say the place is quite quaint and charming, and you don’t quite feel like you’re in Singapore. It serves very old-school Hainanese-style Asian and Western dishes, from chicken curry and fried mee hoon to mixed grills and all manner of combinations of sausages/bacon/eggs/chips/beans/mushrooms/peas.I had the dry fried mamee, expecting the noodles to be like instant noodles, but they turned out to be thick fat noodles instead. Still, their Asian food seems to be better than their Western. This was on the salty and oily sideFood is just so so but overpriced continue reading
