2013-06-11
What’s a meal without desserts? If you’re wondering what’s new in town, pop by these sweet spots for that necessary dose of sugar before the crowds really start to pour in. 1. Maple & Market 34 Cassia Crescent #01-82, Singapore 390034

If unique-sounding bites such as Curry Pumpkin Muffin and Bacon Maple Cupcake pique your curiosity then you must visit Maple & Market. This quaint little store along Geylang’s Cassia Crescent is what owner Sarah refers to as a cake shop-cum-bakery – basically anything but a café. With just a small hangout area for patrons and plenty of whimsical scrapbook-inspired décor all over the place, Maple & Market makes a great weekend hideout for adventurous dessert lovers. New items are often introduced to the menu so if you’re not sure what to order, try the soft and moist Lemon Loaf ($2.80) and the classic Victorian Sponge Cake ($5.50). 2. Cake Spade Orchid Hotel, 1 Tras Link #01-06, Singapore 078867

Cake Spade – sounds an awful lot like a certain fashion brand doesn’t it? Well, you can definitely expect a feast for the eyes with their too-pretty-to-eat cakes – all crafted by homegrown talent, Zenn Eng, who perfected her skills at local culinary institute At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy. The Tofu Cheesecakes seem to be getting a lot of attention so why not go for either the peach or strawberry version ($5+ per slice)? The Red Velvet Cake ($5.90) is also another crowd-pleaser so you can’t go wrong with that. 3. D'Zerts Cafe 30 Jalan Pari Burong, Singapore 488696

At D’Zerts Cafe, the pastry chefs welcome change so customers can almost always expect a different menu each time they drop by for sweets. We say it’s a good way of getting folks to come back for more phenomenal treats! If items like the Tart au Chocolate ($6) and Raspberry Curd Tart ($4.90) are available, order them right away. Other than pastries, D’Zerts Cafe also sells finger food and simple grub like quiche. Additionally, to top it all off you can order tipple like cider and Moscato. 4. Matcha-Man Orchard Plaza, 150 Orchard Road #01-49, Singapore 238841

Fans of Azabu Sabo’s Hokkaido Ice Cream can now rejoice with the opening of Matcha-Man. Located along Singapore’s busy Orchard Road, you can indulge in the same creamy, milky, top-quality ice cream by the experts of Hokkaido-style ice cream. Choose from the wide variety of flavours available and oh, don’t feel guilty about that scoop or two – Azabu Sabo is very serious about their health and wellness policy so their cold treats are low-sugar and low-fat. Watch out for... 5. Becasse Bakery Block 10 Dempsey Road, Singapore 247696 (and one other outlet at ION Orchard)

A patisserie and bakery in one, Becasse is a famed Australian artisanal brand set to open two outlets here in Singapore very soon (opening was initially slated for April 2013); one in Dempsey and the other on the fourth floor of ION Orchard. The focus at the new Becasse Bakery outlets will be French-style pastries and breads, handmade and fresh straight from the kitchen by skillful artisan bakers. Look out for delights such as Strawberry Mille Feuille, French Marshmallows, and the ultimate showstopper, the Gateau St. Honore – an extravagant creation which consists of cream puff dough, pastry cream, caramel and meringue. 6. Lady M Confections Marina Square, 6 Raffles Boulevard #02-103, Singapore 039594

You haven’t tasted real mille feuille if you haven’t tried the ones at Lady M. Hailing all the way from The Big Apple aka New York, Lady M is known as “the pioneer of the world-famous twenty paper-thin layer Mille Crepe cake” and we’re all glad to know it has finally arrived here in Singapore! Marina Square’s new gourmet wing, ‘The Dining Edition’, is home to Lady M’s cake boutique and will be opening sometime this month. We can’t wait to sink our teeth into their lovely cakes – we’re hoping that by doing so we’ll fully understand why celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart and even Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake are such loyal fans!
