Hearty Italian Food and Coffee, What More <br/>Could You Ask For?
2013-12-04
Segafredo Zanetti has always been synonymous with good coffee. It’s not hard to understand why; ever since this Italian coffee brand burst into the scene, people all over the world just fell in love with their freshly-brewed espresso drinks and other offerings. For the record, they grow their beans from their own plantations, and this process ensures the quality which you can expect from every cup of coffee.
Here in Singapore, it’s not just these beverages which you can look forward to. As the first franchise outlet in the world to include a trattoria, there’s also a full menu (with appetisers, main courses, and desserts) to whet your appetite and complete the overall dining experience. You can do just that when you visit their Robertson Walk branch.
Simon Seah, who owns the rights in Singapore, mentioned that he wanted Segafredo Zanetti Trattoria to bring a slice of Italy here. With the help of his team, they came up with a new menu which hand-picked its regional specialties. It won’t be called a trattoria for nothing so the items here are quite affordable, such as their pizza.
Hot off the menu is the Quattro Formaggi Pizza ($16, 9in; $19, 12in) generously topped with Gorgonzola, Parmigiano, Mozzarella, and Provolone. Aside from the four types of cheese, this is made extra special with Italian flour dough and mushrooms. The crust is not too thick nor thin so when you bite on it, it’s not all dough but a good balance of ingredients. The same thing goes for other varieties like the Barzini Pizza ($20) made with white base dough, cream cheese, garlic, and bacon.
Who could forget the pasta? Considered by many as the Italians’ greatest food contribution, Segafredo Zanetti Trattoria also does their versions well. It all starts with their pasta, which is prepared fresh daily. You can taste for yourself how they cook it when you order the Anatra ($19). The al dente fettuccine is lightly flavoured with olive oil before it’s topped with duck, garlic, and prosciutto. It’s so good you may want to try other choices.
If that’s the case, you can opt for the Granchio Pasta ($19) – crabmeat cooked in Italian tomato cream sauce or the Semplici ($17) – linguine with pine nuts, garlic, and sundried tomatoes. Just like any typical Italian meal, you can pair these with full-bodied, dry, or fruity wines. The restaurant has a lot of labels to suit every craving.
Another thing worth mentioning about Segafredo Zanetti Trattoria is the gelato, an Italian dessert that’s healthier than ice cream. Here, they prepare everything from scratch. It’s very much like the authentic version, though they toned down the sweetness by about 30 to 40 percent to suit the Singaporeans’ preference.
True to the Italian trattoria, the restaurant makes you feel like you're dining in Italy
As for the ambiance, the restaurant gives the feeling that you’re actually dining in Italy. It’s not the fancy kind where the tables are draped in pristine white table cloths. It's more like someone’s home with the coffee tables and sofas. Some of the tables are covered in checkered red and white cloths - a common sight in a traditional trattoria. These are complemented by seats you can just relax into. The walls are covered in bricks and decorated with black and white portraits. It just makes you feel like home that you can just spend the whole day here enjoying a cuppa with items from the new menu.
