Lighthouse Bistro: Western Food with an Asian Touch

With its current contemporary interior with hardwood accents, one could never tell that Lighthouse Bistro’s ambience once resembled that of a Chinese dim-sum eatery with its orange-streaked walls and large round white tables. For the past 12 years, the dining establishment situated along Jellicoe Road has been serving mostly members of the Singapore Maritime Officers Union and just as its name suggests, seafarers – both local and foreign – have often frequented the eatery for a meal or two. Today, the restaurant’s maritime identity is strongly reflected in its revamped menu of Asian-influenced meat and seafood dishes. We were delighted straightaway by the first starter brought out for us to taste – Salmon’s Milk Bath ($10), which consisted of gently poached salmon in a light yet milky broth, emitting a comforting twinge of familial food from home with the accompaniment of ginger, chilli, bok choy and enoki mushrooms in the soup.

Seafood Dishes that Don’t Disappoint

The North American Scallops ($15, above) is a must-try for seafood lovers, where perfectly grilled scallops sit atop a bed of tom yum and cauliflower puree. The puree is unmistakably the highlight of the dish – with just the right amount of tanginess and spice to complement the grilled squids and scallops. Fans of the classic fish and chips will not be disappointed with Tiger Fish & Fries ($19), which boasts a crisp tiger-beer-battered pacific sea bass matched with yummy seaweed fries. What followed was the East Atlantic Sea Perch ($23, below) and the garlic mash potatoes that came with it killed the dish – we loved it. It was light, and so delightfully soft.

Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about dessert. We strongly recommend the Salted Chocolate & Caramel ($13, below) if you don’t want to leave the bistro with any regrets. A biscuit base of French chocolate, topped with 72% cocoa chocolate mousse and creamy caramel, garnished with cookie crumble and garden berries…ah, it was the perfect lip-smacking dessert to end our meal.
