Macau Steamboat Experience at Fu Lin Men Dou Lao
Macau Steamboat Experience at Fu Lin Men Dou Lao
2016-01-18
Located just a stone's throw away from Raffles Place MRT, three-storey high Fu Lin Men Dou Lao is a Macau steamboat restaurant on North Canal Road, where OpenRice was invited to host a tasting session with our members in early January.
Besides being a perfect place to dine with friends and family in their VIP suites that cater to 4, 6, 10 or 12 diners, you can even hold bigger business meeting lunches in a function room, which comes fully equipped with AV equipment and can fit up to 30 pax.
With individual pots at every table, there's no need to worry about sharing a steamboat with others. Start by picking from four different soup bases, named after the Chinese Elements; Gold Element: Signature Golden Imperial, Wood Element: Vitality Wild & Cultured Mushroom, Water Element: Longevity Toufu, and Fire Element: Sizzling Chilli.
Of course, what is hotpot without your favourite sauce? For just $2, you’ll get to enjoy the Sauce Bar at Fu Lin Men Dou Lao. Did you know that there are three different sauces to dip in for different meats? Chicken tastes best when dipped with the sesame sauce, while the seafood sauce clearly goes well with fish, prawns and other fresh seafood selections. Love a good spice kick? Get the satay sauce. The recipe for each sauce is provided on the walls of the sauce bar so go on, and mix them all up!
We were first greeted with a pleasant surprise when Fu Lin Men Dou Lao’s very own award-winning chef personally introduced the Freshly Cultured Sea Prawns with Marbled Beef ($18) dish, which made such a grand entrance as water was poured onto dry ice, to create that mystifying fog effect.
Once seated, we started the feast with the sumptuous Fortune Chalice ($38) filled with premium sea cucumber, abalone and mushroom. Starchy yet rich and flavourful, the Fortune Chalice was an addictive starter that is best eaten while it's still hot.
Highly rated (scoring 4.6 out of 5) that night, the Family Bliss Freshly Handcrafted Dou Lao Meat Balls ($7) was the most value-for-money and interesting dish. Amongst the five springy and chewy meat balls prepared in five different flavours, one of them was filled with chocolate!
Another dish you cannot miss, is the Beer Marinated Marbled Beef ($28). Just an alphabet differentiates beer and beef — it’s no wonder that they are a match-made in heaven! Allow 10 minutes for the beef to soak up all the beer-goodness, cook it for 30 seconds and it’s ready to eat! For those who do not take alcohol, the beef alone taste just as good!
Had enough of all the meat and seafood? Try their Bountiful Blessings of Three Treasures ($28). Containing three types of exquisite mushrooms known as Morel, Matsutake, Lion’s Mane Mushroom. The mushrooms may look unsightly to some, but close your eyes and place them into your mouth. Believe or not, you’ll soon be craving for more!
All dishes served during the tasting will be available for Chinese New Year so if you’re looking for a restaurant to hold your family reunion dinner, why not dine at Fu Lin Men Dou Lao?
