New Bites October 2015
This month, we’re here to share 11 exciting new places – including a hot new buffet, a mega Japanese gourmet grocer-restaurant, a famous brunch joint from New York, an “underground” Mediterranean restaurant-bar and a churros chain well-loved by many K-pop celebrities.

1. Clinton St. Baking Company

Straight from The Big Apple comes the famed Clinton St. Baking Company, known to serve American classics with a Southwestern touch. Unlike most franchises from overseas, owners Neil Kleinberg and Dede Lahman have chosen to sit their first South-East Asian post snugly on Purvis Street instead of a bustling mall. What everyone comes for is the fat stack of Pancakes with warm maple butter ($18), made with all-purpose flour from the States and top-grade maple butter from Canada. Another favourite following closely behind, the signature buttermilk fried chicken on waffles ($21) comes with an addictive honey-Tabasco sauce. Did we mention they’ve got a milkshake made with bourbon? Clinton St. Baking Company , 31 Purvis Street, Singapore 188608 (Image: Clinton St. Baking Company & Restaurant)

2. Emporium Shokuhin

Emporium Shokuhin
Spanning 34,000 sq feet, Emporium Shokuhin takes up an entire level of the new wing of Marina Square. Comprising of eight Japanese restaurants, a beef dry-aging facility, a gourmet grocer and a live seafood market, this place is paradise – for Japanese food lovers in particular. Be sure to try out their French award-winning oyster, Kystale ($28 for half dozen, $56 for a dozen). Shop at their gourmet grocer after lunch, where items are generally priced 10-20% cheaper than other Japanese supermarkets in Singapore. Read our full review here. 3. Maggie Joan’s

Possibly Singapore’s first back lane restaurant with nothing but a 2-D steel cutout signboard and several potted olive plants to look out for, Maggie Joan’s is one Mediterranean restaurant worth playing hide and seek with. Stepping in brings you into a whole other world – one with stripped brickwork and elegant chandeliers with an underground-edgy vibe. The second restaurant-bar by the father-and-son team of Moosehead serves up modern Mediterranean dishes put together creatively by Chef Oliver Hyde (formerly of Pollen), who puts seasonal produce such as peaches, apricots and Jerusalem artichoke in the spotlight. Here’s what we loved: Scallop Carpaccio ($21) with peas and ham, Heirloom Tomatoes with Peach and Burrata ($21), Grilled Iberico Pork Secreto, Prunes & Cauliflower ($34) and Egg, Dukkah & Saffron Mayo ($6). 4. Colony

Taking over the space where Greenhouse was, Colony is just about the grandest buffet restaurant we’ve ever seen. Eight ‘live’ kitchens take centre stage, starting with The Bakery and The Patisserie at the entrance, where selected freshly baked breads, decadent desserts and artisan tea chocolates are available for takeaway. Make The Ice Bar your first stop, for a good variety of seafood on ice, then head to the back for grilled pork belly, laksa with a homemade lobster ball and assorted naans. To wash down all that food, fresh pressed fruit juices are available at a dedicated counter. But for you boozy folks, the table-side cocktail service is what you’ll want. 5. Humpback

The good folks of Sugarhall and Jigger & Pony recently launched their third concept, Humpback, one of three bars to take over The Clan’s old premises in Bukit Pasoh. Here, seafood small plates meet cocktails, wine and craft beer. Besides fresh imported oysters as its highlight, the menu comprises a succinct but impressive selection categorised under snacks, garden, seafood, meat and desserts. Go for the Kale ($14), done two-ways and plated with compressed pear and buttermilk sauce; Figs & Beetroot ($15), with ash cheese and burnt orange; Calamari ($14) served in ‘crazy water’ and for dessert, you won’t want to miss out on the Fernet Panna Cotta ($8), which takes the Italian classic to ‘bitter’ heights. 6. Wagokoro Hide Yamamoto

An intimate restaurant that seats just 12 at the bar and another six in a private dining area, Wagokoro Hide Yamamoto is Chef Yamamoto’s third restaurant in Singapore, serving Kappo-style cuisine in multi-course lunch and dinner sets. An eight-course dinner menu ($158) starts with an appetizer, sashimi, one stewed dish, one grilled dish, one fried dish, as well as the signature Duck Consommé Oden, handmade cold soba noodles and a dessert. We tried dishes like Kamo eggplant with sea urchin and Asparagus rolled by Pike Conger, which features seasonal produce that is used and flown in four times a week directly from Tsukiji Fish Market or Hokkaido.
