This August, The Square at NOVOTEL Clarke Quay gets a wave of Peranakan flavours at the buffet line, which refreshes on a monthly basis.
OpenRice was invited to host a tasting session last week for our members to sneak a taste at the robust buffet spread prior to launch. We were treated to a lovely spread of 7 dishes on top of July’s buffet spread, along with the charming company of their chefs and hotel staff!

Here are the overall dish ratings from the session:

All ratings are based on 10 attendees and average ratings out of 5.
A perfect start to our night of Peranakan indulgence was the classic Kueh Pai Tee. It left us craving for more of its crisp shell and fresh thin slices of turnips, diced eggs and prawns. Yes, everyone had seconds.
Most raved that night: Chicken Devil Curry. No doubt a hot favourite that night (pun intended), the use of fresh chilli padi and turmeric in it will please any spice lover out there. Chef Kishe
Chef Jimmy then brought out these gorgeous Oyster Fritters – his accidental creation – for us and it was delish! Each shell came with a black bean sauce with a tad of heat, and the fresh oysters were covered in a light batter.
Other meat dishes that were served included Babi Pongteh (stewed pork with fermented soya beans and mushroom), which featured pork ribs instead of the traditional pork belly, two types of Nonya Style Assam Fish – baked and fried, where the fried version was preferred, Ayam Buah Keluak and Bakwan Kepiting.
To round up the 4-hour buffet session with our OpenRice members, we went head-first into a sweet indulgence of traditional Kueh and an extensive array of desserts. Head over to The Square this month for their indulgent Peranakan buffet, available alongside other signature dishes!
