Restaurant Recommendations in Changi
Restaurant Recommendations in Changi
2013-11-27
We bet that when we utter the word “Changi”, the place being a foodie destination will be the last thing on most people’s minds. But the fact is, there are so many restaurants worth visiting there… if you’re willing to travel for food. Well, we are, and so we pick 6 restaurants in this part of Singapore which impressed us with their offerings.
1. Chock Full of Beans
This unassuming café located under an HDB building in Changi Village seems to attract different kinds of customers – families, couples, to neighbourhood residents out for a bite. From the packed Saturday crowd, we assume that word got around about its offerings and latte drinks topped with impressive (and customised) artworks.
The all-day weekend brunch menu is quite enticing as they have more than the usual items. Our pick for the mains is the Chock Full of Big Breakfast ($17) - loaded with chicken chipolatas, scrambled eggs, bacon, roasted tomato, baked beans, and homemade toast. Pair this together with the signature latte for a power packed breakfast. But if you’re having this on a warm day, perhaps a glass of smoothie will keep you more refreshed.
Sandwiches here have quite an interesting combination. Our choice is the Bacon and Mango Sandwich ($12) where you can find crisp bacon and sweet mango sandwiched between crusty breads. The bacon here is quite salty, so the sweet mango slices give you the perfect balance of flavour.

2. The Coastal Settlement
It’s completely out of the way for most people, but for The Coastal Settlement, it actually adds to that secret garden charm the place exudes. To get there, you have to walk along a deserted road and a grassy pathway before you see the restaurant signboard. From the outside, it looks a bit like a residential bungalow with a spacious yard and playground. But the interior is a totally different world. It seems to take you back to the 60s with the retro cars, classic motorbikes, as well as antique chandeliers and décor.
Though the items here are bordering on the expensive side, the portions are big enough for 2. An example is The Perfect Roast ($25), half a chicken roasted to achieve that tender meat and crisp skin. It’s drenched with creamy mushroom sauce and topped with poached broccolini.
Pizzas are also on the menu, and the Margherita Pizza ($20) is the most simple but appetising item. It’s prepared with a thin crust that is topped generously with tomatoes, cheese; and arugula for that nutty bite. Good for sharing.

3. Table Manners
Located just outside Changi City Point, Table Manners pretty much attracts most of the shop goers within the area. We’re not surprised for the owners have designed the place to look quite homey. It’s just like one’s cosy living room with book shelves and decors on the side, hanging lamps which bathe the interior in a warm glow, and those witty writings on the walls. With its communal dining concept, it also allows diners to interact with each other – just like in a dining table.
Another reason why the place is always packed with eager diners is the food. The menu boasts a gastronomic feast of pasta, seafood, and meat! The signature here is the TM Ribs ($20/half rack, $36/full rack) served with potato wedges and salad. The pork ribs are cooked for hours to achieve that juicy and tender texture where the meat just falls of the bone. It’s drenched in the special sauce which gives it a more robust flavour.
The pasta dishes here are also exceptionally comforting, and one such item is the Pasta Al Fungi ($17) – fettuccine prepared with rich pesto cream and mushrooms. The heaviness of the sauce is cut by the strong garlic flavour and the result is a delectable item which is quite popular with the foodies.

4. Seafood Paradise
It’s so convenient that Seafood Paradise is located right in Changi Airport. Occupying a lavish space within Terminal 2’s food hub, the restaurant is a constant reminder of the authentic Chinese cuisine travellers will miss once they depart Singapore. To tempt them even more, the restaurant is open all day so they can have a taste of their dishes before they go.
At Seafood Paradise, the first item to try is always the signature Creamy Butter Crab ($53.20) – a specialty which has been in the menu for 10 impressive years. For this, the sweet and meaty Sri Lankan crab is served in deep rich sauce prepared with evaporated milk, butter, and curry leaves. This goes well with the warm buns, which you can use to finish the whole plate.
There are more items which are worth ordering, too. For some quick bites, there’s the Crispy Prawns tossed in Salted Egg Yolk ($18.90) –jumbo prawns which are tender on the inside but quite crispy on the outside; or the Poached Baby Spinach ($14.90), a healthier option if you want a break from seafood.

5. The Bark Cafe
It’s so far, yet still quite accessible…even for those who don’t have cars. Nestled in Upper Changi Road, this restaurant provides some sort of sanctuary for people who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle in the city. And what a place it is! The massive 200-seater al fresco restaurant is decked in wood from top to bottom giving you that Balinese feel. The furniture is also simple with comfy rattan chairs to sit on. It gives you that relaxed vibe you may be looking for when you want to dine in peace.
As for the food, Chef Eric Neo has presented all his specialties in one menu; with dishes ranging from home grown delicacies to western favourites like the Chicken Wings ($15.90)– coated with just enough breading to make it tender and juicy. The Crayfish Hor Fun ($17.90), also a signature here, is prepared with succulent crayfish plus those meaty jumbo prawns. It’s served with thick glass noodles and a lot of gravy.

The 101-seater restaurant offers international buffet lunches and dinners from just $38++ per adult on weekdays.
Some popular dishes on the menu we feel you just shouldn’t miss: the Boston Lobster Laksa, Nasi Goreng Katong, Katong Satay, and the Kampong Curry Set – dishes with that unique blend of Chinese, Malay/Indonesian flavours that truly sets them apart.
