To some, it’s the stuff dreams are made of – happiness presented to you in a perfectly wrapped shoe box (or ten). We say, save your dollars for your shopping, and dine at these affordable food places where you can get a cheap set lunch right smack in the heart of our most beloved shopping belt.

1. Tanuki Raw

Stop by Tanuki Raw and you’ll be guaranteed a satisfying lunch. Get the salmon don, which comes with freshly sliced sashimi, lightly seared aburi, plump ikura, all in a housemade spicy mayo and yakiniku sauce. 2. Jew Kit

Jew Kit is a traditional Hainanese chicken rice eatery, which has been in Singapore for over two decades. Other than the outlet at Killiney, there’s also a branch at Upper Bukit Timah Road. And apart from the standard chicken rice and accompanying dishes, they have expanded to sell a wide variety of zichar items as well. From their variety of chicken rice sets, we like “Memories” – served with sides of kolopok, salted vegetables and cucumbers ($5.30). 3. Gyoza-Ya

You can have yourself a full meal at Gyoza-Ya for less than $15 – for your main, choose the fragrant garlic fried rice ($5.80), or the jyajya men ($6.50), which is sumptuously chewy. Order their signature dish, gyoza ($4.80, six pieces) for your side – this is available either fried or steamed. Top off your meal with a cup of tea ($1). 4. Soup Stock Tokyo

Soup Stock Tokyo was first started in Tokyo in 1999, and fast forward 15 years later, they’ve opened their 3rd outlet in Singapore, at 313@Somerset. 5. Watami

Visit Watami at lunchtime to take advantage of their cheap set menus! All set menus come with a salad and choice of drink, plus the main dish, which changes daily. Monday’s dish is Chicken katsu tamago toji teishoku, Tuesday’s is Oyako don, Wednesday’s is Yakiniku don, Thursday’s is Ishiyaki mentai takana bibimbap and Friday’s is Tokyo gyu don. 6. Seasons Bistro

Seasons Bistro prides itself on its seasonally-changing menus and its Instagram-worthy dishes. For $12.99, you get a soft drink, starter (go with the autumn house salad – it’s thrown together with roasted pumpkin, field greens, tomatoes, French beans and pickled onions, and it’s a safe bet!), and main course (smoked salmon club or chicken Caesar salad). 7. Hot Tomato Café and Grill

Hot Tomato Café and Grill’s lunch express deal gets you a soup of the day and drink when you add $2.50++ to any main course on weekdays from 11am to 3pm (excluding public holidays). Try the salmon teriyaki and olive rice (approximately $14.90 including set), or the black pepper chicken chop and sausage (approximately $13.60 including set). 8. Hock Lam Beef Noodles

Hock Lam Beef Noodles is famed for its homemade soup base which is boiled for 24 hours, as well as its homemade chilli sauce consisting of 13 ingredients. They have branches at Far East Square and Alexandra Retail Centre, but their newest outlet at ION Orchard makes it convenient for die-hard fans to get their Hock Lam fix. Try the set meal, which is priced at $11.90 and really a steal – you get a bowl of noodles, a side of salad, a drink of your choice and a serving of fruits. 9. JWHotdog

Craving for something all-American? Get your hot dog set at JWHotdog – you get a hotdog, nachos or fries, and a drink for just $8.90. 10. Itacho Sushi

You can also count on Itacho Sushi to offer great deals. Their current lunch set promotion is $8.50 for a main, with an extra $3 for miso soup and salad. Mains include deep fried mackerel with vegetable in soy sauce, butter yaki gin karel fish, grilled aji fish, grilled salmon with spicy miso, and grilled mackerel, and all mains come with a side of rice. 11. Nantsuttei

If you’re in the mood for some ramen, head down to Nantsuttei at Orchard Central. They’ve got our mouths watering and our stomachs growling with their lunch promotion – order any ramen (their house signature is $12!) and top up with $1++ to get a free side dish (gyoza, karaage, wonton, or salad), plus a dessert and a glass of iced tea. 12. The Soup Spoon

A bowl of hot soup goes a long way in warming the soul! At The Soup Spoon, add $4.90 to any regular or large soup to get a meal with a half sandwich, half wrap, or half salad, plus a choice of beverage, or chips, or apple. Soup prices start from $5.90 for the tangy tomato with basil (an excellent choice, by the way), so that’s only $10.80 for an extremely satisfying meal! 13. Nam Nam Noodle Bar

Nam Nam Noodle Bar has captured our hearts ever since they first set up shop back in 2012, and they’re giving us more reason to rejoice with their “Saigon Street Favourite” Value Lunch Set. Priced at $9.90, you get a duo of steamed shrimp tapioca cake and Hue shrimp rice cake, a choice of beef or chicken pho, and a choice of coffee or tea. 14. Toss & Turn

It’s no secret that Toss & Turn serves up a mean salad, and they’ve been known to convert even the most ardent of meat-lovers. Get a regular salad – we recommend the signature Roast Chicken Feta salad with paprika dressing – with fresh juice or iced tea for only $12. For something more filling, top up your meal with an additional half sandwich for just $14. You can’t go wrong with the smoked salmon. 15. 49 Seats

This isn’t exactly a lunch set, but you can get a rather satisfying meal at 49 Seats for under $15 so we thought we’d include it anyway. For their outlet at Orchard Central, get the Seafood Marina at $10 nett (original price $13.90) or the Fish and Chips with Alscampi also at $10 nett (original price $16.90). Two thumbs up!
