Tucked away in a quiet corner off Upper Serangoon Road, Sunday Market (Cafe) appears non-descript from the outside, but don't be fooled. This hidden gem of a cafe offers adventurous fusion food, blending elements of Southeast Asia cuisine with classical American and British influences. Sunday Market (Cafe) is definitely unafraid of pushing boundaries!

Ambeince at Sunday Market (Cafe) is one of the highlights. Some have described the place as quirky, which seemingly doesn't encompass what it is... an organised chaos. Decor is urban street grunge, meets anti-establishment, meets elegant sophistication. Rough brick and unfinished cement walls stand opposed to clean white and red walls. Industrial metal and wooden furniture line the floor, while creeping plants fill the corners, and a bright red bicycle hangs over the dessert counter. Suddenly, there's an elegant gold chandelier and a giant bird sclupture too. Even the music is random, you could be listening to upbeat mandarin pop one minute, followed by a mellow jazz number the next.

Service at Sunday Market (Cafe) is pretty good. The young staff are upbeat and proactive, quick in seating you and taking orders, as well as being able to recommend items from the menu. I like that Sunday Market (Cafe) offers tableside service, they even help top up your water glass! They even come around to warn you if the parking attendant shows up, which I understand happens rather frequently in this area!

Food at Sunday Market (Cafe) is fusion, Singapore style. Each dish is creative, with many items here being handmade. However, taste can sometimes be hit and miss, and is rather subjective as their food is experimental. Portions are big enough for 1 person, and prices are at the upper end for a cafe, budget about SGD $29 per person for a meal at Sunday Market (Cafe).

The Chicken Little (SGD $11.90) features crisp fried chicken tenders and a creamy home made coleslaw on a fragrant waffle, drizzled with chipotle maple syrup. The weakest part of this dish was the waffle, while it was incredibly fragrant and crisp, it was also dry. I loved the home made coleslaw, which was fresh and slightly sweet in taste. The chicken tenders were moist and savoury, tender in texture, but the kick was the savoury curry spice used as the batter. Great, I wish I could order just the chicken tenders alone!

The Beef Rendang Toast (SGD $15.90) is only available as a weekend brunch dish, and is well worth ordering. Chunks of tender beef striploin, marinated in a savoury, spiced rendang gravy, extremely tasty and flavourful! Served with crisp buttered brioche toast strips, which you dip into the incredibly fragrant and aromatic rendang gravy / curry before eating... Highly recommended!

The Bangkok Toast (SGD $10.90) is the house signature dessert. A thick slab of sweet brioche toast, filled with a sweet milky cream, dusted with cinnamon sugar and topped with strawberries, is the star on the plate, and good enough to eat on its own. Alongside is a smooth green tea custard garnished with blueberries, and I'm surprised it doesn't have that powdery texture usually associated with matcha desserts. The weakest element is the Thai milk tea ice cream, while the home made ice cream retains the flavour of an authentic Thai milk tea, it had more ice crystals instead of a smooth milky texture.

The place is located at the end of a row of shophouses. It is about 10 minutes walk from the MRT station. Recently the cafe has changed its operating hours and menu. Now it is opens from 9.30am onwards on Sunday, which is just nice for me to come by after yoga class nearby. I am surprised that the cafe is empty of customers when I reach the place. The place has a unfinished look with bricks on the walls. Pictures decorated the walls. As christmas is coming, weaths are hanging around from the ceilings. There is also a bright red bicycle hanging by the wall behind the counter. Delicious looking cakes with fancy names such as Red Velvet, Breakfast (Jam with Peanut Butter), Go,Go,Gorilla (Banana and Rum), and Campfire (Chocolate and Marshmallow) line the display counter. Quite a refreshing looking place.

Scramble eggs with smoked salmon & cream cheese served on a buttered toast with grilled tomatoes & tomato marmalade.
The toast is soft and buttery. Topped with the creamy scrambled egg of smoked salmon and cheese, it is heavenly tasty.

Sautéed slice beef with bell peppers & onions, topped with drizzles of cheese sauce and mayonnaise.
The sliced beef is quite tender and flavourful, but the yorkshire pudding is a bit too oily. But topped with the sinfully rich cheese sauce and mayonnaise, it is a great combination dish.

Bangkok Toast ($10.90++)
Cinnamon thick sweet brioche toast with Matcha Green Tea custard, served with Thai milk tea ice-cream.
This item is not available in the brunch menu. As I recall seeing it in the menu online, I ask the staff about it and is told it would available in the afternoon. Lucky for me that halfway through the meal, the staff for the dessert reports for work and asks if I would like to have it. That's why I have this dessert during brunch. Soft creamy custard filled the soft brioche toast. It is quite yummy when soaking the toast with the matcha green tea custard or thai milk tea ice-cream.

Overall the food is not bad. Service is great too, with water refilled regularly and staffs often come around to update about the food. The staffs are young and eager to please. By the way the cafe is currently having a lucky draw with purchase of $30 and more.

Since our first visit, Little Devil and I went back there three times in the past two months and we just can't get enough of the place and it is so near our place.

First impression, from the outside, it is quite funky. The signboard is a combination of red and white is more like a Chinese restaurant instead of cafe. Once you are in, the décor is unique, minimalistic but making you feel like you are dining outdoor. The crowd just make it feels lively. Not sure why, but it seems to be in trend that lots of cafe like to hang oldies stuff such as bicycle, chair, TV, etc. from their ceiling.

So what are the must try items here:
Crispy Duck Leg Confit ($17.90). Move over French Bistro, most newbies cafe in Singapore has mastered this dish. The same can be said here, nicely executed. The skin is crispy, the meat is tender, flavourful and not too salty. While duck confit supposed to be soak in duck fat during the marinating process, you don't feel the oiliness here. The potato is crisp, goes well with the brown sauce and salad.

Pulled Duck Sandwich ($13.90). Another well executed duck dish here, the use brioche bread packs more flavour to the dish. It was pan fried at first, so it is crispy, and you can feel the crunchiness of the duck in the sandwich as well. The creamy slaw and brown sauce bind the whole sandwich together. Good for light bite.

French Toast with BBQ Chicken ($12.90). This is a modern fusion dish with Thai twist. The grilled chicken is sweet, tender and succulent. Using the same brioche bread for French toast is the right choice. The fried egg is good and the sriracha sauce give a unique twist to the dish.

Bangkok Toast ($10.90). One of the best desserts here with awesome presentations. The brioche is flavoured with cinnamon (very light) and icing sugar. Green tea custard and Thai Milk tea ice cream are have a subtle hint of sweetness and very good to accompany the toast. Once the ice cream melts, it become a creamy milk shake.

Waffle with Ice Cream ($9.50 – double scoop). The waffle is thick and crispy. We tried Belgium Chocolate and Thai Milk Tea ice cream. Both are creamy and delicious, best of all it is not overly sweet. Yum Yum

For drinks, the caffeine is very average. Don't expect those artisan coffee, as it is not their focus here. (Hint to management, Can we get better coffee??). I personally like their Lemmy Lemonade ($5.90). This lemonade is just refreshingly tangy. Imported from New Zealand, this drink is organic (not that I really care) and it just tasted awesome. Thai Milk tea is also a favourite but it can be a bit sweet if you don’t have a sweet tooth.

Service is fast and friendly. After they took your order, they will provide you with the cutlery and the anticipation of getting your grub soon. From the way it looks, the utensils and cutleries are from Thailand.

The Average Coffee

Overall, Sunday Market is going to be our cafe of choice in 2014. The food is excellent and value for money. We really enjoy the comfortable atmosphere here and best of all you don't need to wait for long to get a seat. Well, you definitely see us more often here. Cheers!!
