Yum Cha Restaurant has launched their CNY menu, and it doubles up as a takeaway/delivery menu too! I was privileged to try their takeaway menu items last week, where the food was delivered to a condominium function room. Here's what we had!

BBQ Suckling Pig: This was the centrepiece of the table. A huge suckling pig was layed out, all sliced and cut out into many even pieces. The meat was really, really tender and fragrant, while the skin was crispy. It was a little cold by the time we ate it but I guess it's because it's been left out for a while and we were busy snapping pictures. But considering that it's takeaway, this dish was pretty good!

Braised Pig's Trotter with Fatt Choy: The meat was also very tender and it fell off the bone easily. The Fatt Choy (black moss) was yummy. The gravy was a little salty though.

Fried Rice with Chinese Sausage in Lotus Leaf: The fried rice was not bad, though lacking in wok hei possibly because it's takeaway. The Chinese sausage, also known as lap chiong, gave the dish more flavour, though it could have been cut in bigger pieces.

Salmon Yu Sheng: If you're worried about consuming salmon sashimi, rest assured as the fish is sourced from Norway and it's definitely AVA-approved. The Yu Sheng was quite nice, and one noteworthy thing perhaps, is that they make their own sourplum sauce.

I think a lot of thought has been put into making sure that the takeaway food stays warm, presentable and tasty. They use this huge bag (below) where there's some warmer inside that keeps the food warm. This technology is called 'cook tek', and makes the food stay warm for 2 hours.

There was a good combination of condiments including jelly fish which makes the dish very special. The dish looked very appetising and colourful. The combination of the seasoning makes the taste a bit more sourish than the typical yusheng.

The roasted chicken comes with a special garlic powder which added to the taste and made the dish more fragrant. The chicken was well roasted and juicy. The chicken was quite large and meaty.

The pig trotter was quite a large piece. The meat was very tender and the gravy was especially tasty with the Fatt Choy. It was well braised and the pig skin melted in the mouth. It came with some lettuce which helped to absorb the fatty juice and made the lettuce fantastically tasty.

The rice had good flavour, however, the rice was not well cooked. If the rice had been a bit more cooked, it would definitely be a great delicious dish! It is a good idea to present fried rice in a lotus leaf.

Suckling Pig $220+ (whole)

The sucking pig skin was very thin and crispy. The meat was unusually tender and juicy. There were no fats found below the skin, making it easy to eat. Some of us who are very health conscious would not need to remove the fats before eating the crispy skin. The size of the pig can feed about 6 to 10 person.

Yum Cha Restaurants will be launching their Chinese New Year takeaway and delivery menus on 15th Jan 2016 - 22nd Feb 2016 and thanks to OpenRice and YumCha we were invited to try out the menu selections. Yum Cha Restaurants known for mouth-watering dim sum delicacies has always been a family favourite and we visited there annually for our chinese new year reunion dim sum brunch. My fondest childhood memories were created there, enjoying dim sum with extended family members.One key thing to note

One key thing to note is that since this is a takeaway menu, we didn't dine in at Yum Cha restaurant. To provide the actual feel of a delivery, everything was served just like how it would've been at your own home. The drinks came in cardboard packaging at 1Litre each, we had Barley drink or chinese tea.

The barley drink was really sweet, and you would need some ice to chill the drink as well. The chinese tea stayed warm throughout our 2 hours of food tasting!

So how does food that get delivered to you taste in comparison to eating straight at Yum Cha? Yum Cha did their researched and went with Cook Tek which is a delivery bag that uses induction to keep all the food warm so that it arrives at your door step piping hot!!

This is no normal delivery bag, it actually requires charging and has a battery to power up the induction fans to circulate the heat within the bag! Kudos to Yum Cha for the taking innovative effort to let us have warm food!

1. Salmon Yusheng $68+ (L) / $38+ (S)

Salmon Yu Sheng (Large)

A usual offering at all CNY dinner. Fresh fish coupled with fresh ingredients makes this dish a great start to the dinner.

I rarely enjoy eating yusheng but I really enjoyed Yum Cha's salmon yusheng. Their salmon are from AVA certified suppliers and from Norway. So rest assured with all the salmon scares you've seen in the news lately, or just give me all the salmon

I'll happily eat them for you!

Salmon Yu Sheng (Large)

Prepared with jellyfish, pomelo, home made sauces, the Yum Cha staff, Adam went ahead to bless us in the according order as he drizzled the condiments all over the yusheng. I really liked their sour plum sauce. It was slightly sour and yet not too sweet, giving the yusheng the right taste for me.

I really liked the crunchy and crispy crackers!

A variety of delectable Abalone Yu Sheng dishes, including Vegetarian Abalone Yu Sheng, are offered at Yum Cha!

2. Roasted Crispy Chicken $40+

Roasted Crispy Chicken

As with most chinese tradition, you either get a duck or a chicken during a reunion meal. Yum Cha also offers a roasted crispy duck whole $60+. The chicken wasn't as tender and soft as I had expected it to be. Rather the meat took some effort to be taken off the bone. The skin as well, was a disappointment as it wasn't as crispy as any roasted crispy chicken experiences I've had.

The meat was still tasty and had a strong aroma of the chopped garlic that was sprinkled all over the chicken.

3. BBQ Suckling Pig $220+ (Whole) / $118 (Half)

The highlight of the evening, and probably a great way to come together and rekindle ties with family members at home is this BBQ Suckling Pig! Not a common sight a dinner table, but surely a favourite for many.

The skin was crispy but could've been crispier. The meat was juicy and very tasty. Underneath the crispy suckling pig skin was either a very thin layer of fat or no fat at all. You get a lot of meat under the skin! This is one meaty piglet!

The sweet sauce that comes with the suckling pig was also a good compliment to the savoury meat. You could also taste a slight, smokey, burnt taste in every bite of the meat!

4. Braised Pig's Trotters with "Fatt Choy" (Black Moss) $38+ (half)

I loved braised pig's trotter and this was no exception. Delightfully aromatic and with flavours which are strangely familiar and yet alien to me at the same time, it was love at first sight… or taste rather. It was braised until every sinewy tendon was melt-in-your-mouth, but still held its shape well. The flavour was also very balanced, not too spicy, not too sweet. The skin, the tendons, the flesh had me sold.

Check out the fatt choy! I love how the meat just falls right off the bone and it's so soft and tender. But I also noted there wasn't too much meat in this container, but it is only half a pig's trotter. The rich juices of the braised pig trotters was memorable for me!

5. Fried rice with Chinese sausage in Lotus Leaf $38+

The rice was all wrapped up in the Lotus Leaf. Taken straight out of the Cook Tek bag, the rice was piping hot and fragrant. But once cooled, the aroma of the rice went away quickly. The steamed rice was accompanied by quality dried shrimps.

I felt that the rice itself was abit too dry for my liking, it could be that it sat on the table for a while, before I went to help myself with it. But on top of that, the rice could've had more flavour. I found myself mixing the rice with the braised pig trotters sauce in an attempt to add more tastes into the rice.

On top of these items at the food tasting, Yum Cha provides you with other choices to pamper your family members with, such as Abalone Pen Cai that has fish maw, sea cucumbers, dry conpoy, fried oysters, "Fatt Choy" and roasted pork.
