So.. I've always been a huge fan of conveyor belt, 100jpy/$1 sushi.. and today was the opening promotion for the Serangoon Nex Mall Sushi Express. Located on Basement 1, where the old Shabu-Sushi was, next to Nandos, underneath Isetan. Here is the store front and you can see the menu board of all the sushi and desserts that they offer for $1.50++ each, but during their opening promotion from 7-9th Jan 2015, it was $1++ per plate. This sign alone attracts hundreds to visit Serangoon Nex, I'm pretty sure the nearby shops will truly benefit from this random influx of passerbys.Once you are seated, you will see the conveyor belt just inches from you, and that's where you get to pick your food. The staff are also busy refilling food and desserts onto the conveyor. I did notice the staff working at lightning speed, trying to replenish the food and desserts, as everyone had a 40 minute time limit to dine.Such a thick cut salmon for $1++, some people might shun the fact that this is "cheap sushi" Well, it still melts in your mouth like the salmon I had in Japan did. So to me, it's totally worth the $1++. Eating whilst not worrying about the bill is the best dining experience. You can always smell they barbequeing something and this is what they were doing. Aburi Salmon! Of course no where as good as the one I had at Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru in Liang Court, but it is pretty damn close to it! The BBQ smell and taste is very strong and the salmon itself seems to be very fatty, possibly from the belly? The Tuna didn't taste as fresh as the salmon but still fresh and thick cut. A nice texture change from just the normal salmon sashimi.Every bite I had into this sushi, you could feel and taste the crunch of eggs! A very nice experience indeed! This was the highlight of the meal, I waited 20 minutes for them to replenish this onto the conveyor belt. Ikura Gunkan, is probably one of their more expensive sushi that they offer. The roe itself was very perfectly round and one bite and the juice just flows out! It was very fresh. Fresher than what I had at Itacho Sushi just 3 days ago.Unlike Nihon Mura that gives you parts of a baby octopus. Sushi Express gives you 3 whole baby octopus and they were pretty big for a baby octopus. I really enjoyed this sweet and savoury dish. The sauce was a bit thick and had me grabbing my green tea. On the upside, green tea is free and free flow. For those of you who love thick, dense chocolate cakes, this is for you! I enjoyed it thoroughly even though I had to man-handle mine with chopsticks rather than use the provided plastic spoon for desserts. It had just arrived out of the freezer, I watched the staff plate each chocolate cake in front of me. It can be quite gerlat, which is why the free flow hot green tea comes in handy!I really liked this dessert, it wasn't too sweet and you could eat whole blueberries in the jam. The pudding was milky and was just soft enough to almost make you think that you are eating a soft serve ice cream?I was very intrigued by this machine that made the rice balls for the sushi and whenever it was done filling up a tray, it had a sensor to stop making rice balls, until a staff came to change the tray. For the 2 of us, we ate 17 plates, so a total of $20 for the both of us, and we were bloated with very happy sushi inside us!
