It's been awhile since I last had dim sum and instead of heading to gim tim or any of those fancy sit down restaurants, I realized that you can still get good quality dim sum any where you go. Ho Kee is a chain that serves dim sum at local heartland malls and even here at the hawker center.Their big pau is truly big with a wedge of hard boiled egg, even "tiong bahru" big pau no longer has an egg. When you order a big pau, the staff will ask if you want a chicken or a pork one. Seriously, between the two, both are just as fragrant and juicy, but the chicken just smells so much more delicious!Another one of my favourite is this crispy prawn roll. For just $1.30 you get 4 crunchy and rather sizeable prawns. Definitely restaurant standard for a prawl roll. The quintessential items for tim sum are Har Gow (prawn dumpling) and Siew Mai (prawn and pork dumpling served open-faced wrapped with wonton skin).Ho Kee Pau outlet is one of my favourite place for a quick takeaway of har gow and siew mail.:)A good quality Har Gow (prawn dumpling) very much lies on the rice wrapping. The wrapping needs to be thin if its too thick it becomes chewy and most of all not forgetting the wholesome shrimp on each dumpling.Siew Mai the dumpling wrapped with wonton skin served open-faced topped with some roe with ingredients comprising of shrimp and pork(with combination of slightly fatty meat). Came here around 10 plus in the morning and didn't eat any breakfast and I saw this stall with many chinese snacks and I bought a fried beancurd skin with fish meat filling and a steamed dumpling with pork and prawns. They were both tasty and the beancurd skin was crispy and the dumpling's filling were fresh and no porky smell but both also slightly salty. Both around 80 and 90 cents each.…Read More

Craving for dim sums so we headed to here for some. We had a few items like siew mai and har gao. The siew mai is wrapped with a yellow dumpling skin with tasty pork meat as fillings. The color is really attractive. I love the tenderness of the meat. It is just fragrant. As for har gao, it is wrapped in white dumpling skin and there's a generous amount of prawns in it. Biting on a piece of yellow, sponge-like cake reminds my of my childhood. ( spongebob? NO!! ). It's Ma Lai Gao. Direct translation is malay cake. It has a rich flavour of egg and a soft texture, exactly like the one i used to eat when i was young. My dad used to bring my siblings and i to great world city to walk around and to grab a bite most of the time. This yellow character is always present without fail. Not too sure whether what i ate when i was from ho kee but they didn't disappoint me though it will be tastier is it's not so dry. Recommended but there are better alternatives around.
