There then, I have benched mark them as the best black version of BKT in Singapore. And not soon after, I learned that the stall was closed and they have a similar name located in Marsiling.
I remembered vividly that I had been here once or twice but didnt left any good impression as I felt that the broth was very different from what I had experienced earlier.

As starters, we order Cai Buay (Preserved Vegetables) to welcome the incoming claypot meals. It was crunchy and striked a good balance between salty & sweetness.

The side that I can never go without during my BKT session. Freshness of the You Teow was below par and it tasted like as if it was being placed for a long period of time. Perhaps they will be better to served toasted in such situation like that.

The claypot liver is one of the best out of all orders.

Cooked to perfect softness with dark soy sauce infused to every slice. What's more, the ginger slices permeats the sauce and reducing the natural smell of those livers, also elevated the whole claypot dish into another tasty level. On a side note, to enjoy the tenderness in the livers, it is best not to let it "cook" in the claypot for long during serving.

The plain claypot was brightened up by the lovely fresh greens which topped the dish. No doubt the cloudy soup is filled with herb taste, its standard was a far cry from what I had expected due to that it is diluted. The meat balls, innards were the standards and nothing steal the show. Even with a dab of the meat with chilli padi in black sauce would gave additional kick to the meal. The soup was addictive and one wont stop just after a few spoonfuls but... once the MSG effect kicked in... I was very thirsty.

Though soup is known to be refillable, the service was kind of unresponsive. We had make our request to refill the soups but it was not done initially. And when we approached them again, we were told to self service from the stall with a metal cup.
Hong Ji may be one of the better black version BKT in Singapore but I still find them lacking in terms of service and quality of soup. Since this is a malaysian style BKT, I would say that if you have tried one of those famous ones, this is definitely of no fight.

Its one of the places that made me come back with its quality herbal soup base but this particular visit disppointed me as the standard is no longer there. The chye buay was also way too salty. Meatballs was ok but again those were factory made items. The pork ribs meat was also tough to bite. Sure hope its just one of their off days else i suspect business will drop soon. I already can see there were more people eating prawn noodles instead of their BKT.

The special thing about their bak kut teh is their herbal soup. The soup are also simmered over fiery charcoals to give that traditional taste to it. The herbal soup is really thick and authentic, giving the herbal taste without any peppery sensation. They are pretty generous with their meat too. Most importantly, there's always a crowd but luckily you dont have to queue because the would serve it to you!Celine

This dark bak ku teh is saltier without the pepper taste like the white version, if you order the mixed, the soup has a stronger taste because of the liver.. And there's a lot more varieties inside the soup - button mushroom, tao pok and veggies. Bite into the chewy braised pork trotter, giving you the collagen you need without the oily feeling - guilt free..

ClayPot Bak Kut Teh and only waited for about 5 minutes.

Chopped You tiao pairs off well with their super aromatic and flavourful soup with strong herb taste. The soft and tender pork ribs that comes off easily from the bones. Fried tau pok in the soup soaks up the tasty soup (yum) and drips out the soup goodness as you chew in your mouth.

Overall, I seldom have anything to do in the north area and it's far from where I live to drive all the way here just for BKT, but I'll definitely be back again if I'm in the area.

I can just drown myself in the soup because anything of such sweet thick herbal stuff just melts me.

Fragrant and the meat melts off the bone without being too dry, the pig's trotters was also done just right...

Overall, a good eat!!!

not actually cut I'm not sure why. They added tau pok too!

Overall, I think is normal and overpriced.

My friend mentioned that there is another Hong Ji BKT in marsiling so without further ado we drove to the Teo Chap Bee Eating House located in Marsiling.

Ordered one big claypot of BKT which costs $10 and each bowl of rice costs $0.50. Initially we had forgetting to order the fried fritters but after sipping a few mouthful of the soup, we find that its very different. Have they changed their recipe, we paused. The taste is a far cry from what we had in Hong Ji BKT located in Catcus Rd. That's horrible. It's so bland. And I tried to search for slices of button mushrooms in it but there were none. What happened? It totally whack the good image of Black sauce bak kut teh in my mind. What a turn off! This will be the first and last time I'm there for Hong Ji BKT.

Ah? Tau Pok floating on top of BKT. I dont remember having that.
However the BKT consists of the usual pork liver, stomach, ribs etc. Nothing special in particular.

Service
We have to queue a while to order the BKT at the stall. Order was served about 10 minutes later. They do offer refillal of soup but it was not mentioned by the staff. Staff was all dressed in yellow
red polo tee representing Hong Ji.

Ambience
Coffee shop is mostly packed with Hong Ji Bak Kut Teh Fans, most of the tables are having claypot bak kut teh on their table. Due to that we were not that early, I have no choice but to sit at the area under the wide umbrella which is the smoking area. It's outdoor somemore and to make the situation worse, there were rain droplets sipping through the big shelter (umbrella) which makes my whole dinning experience awful!

Price
The price doesnt match the lousy food Im having. Total disappointment!

Recommendations / Tips
The after taste(after dinner) is really awful . I have to drink lots and lots of water after that. Feeling very uncomfortable. Think there is a "overkill" of MSG added.

This is a popular stall in this food centre for bak kut teh and braised pig's trotter. I ordered a smallest serving of bak kut teh to take away. They serve the Malaysia style of black bak kut teh. It came with a few pork ribs with tau pok. It has a slight herbal-ish taste which i liked. The texture of the pork ribs was a bit too tough and the tau pok did not seem to go well with the pork ribs so it is not recommended.

not too strong and not too bitter, perfect
But I find that the tau pok in the soup does taste weird with the soup. As for the braised pig intestine was a little bit of disappointed, the braising taste was not strong enough but the texture was very soft and chewy, too bad. For those living in the north craving for ba ku teh may come here and give a try

But well, I'm free today so I decided to share this with others here today.

First of all, the way they cook the Ba Kut is the tradiational kind and the spice they used taste the same as those I had in when I was young, unlike those newer generation BKT which taste rather different and salty. The soup is great and they even allow us to top up the soup, which is a rare sight nowadays on coffeeshop.

The pork rib taste normal when u eat it just by itself and in order to unleash its full taste, you got to dip it into the dark sauce and chili and eat it. Yums! The tao pok is good too but I also dip it into the dark sauce. haha.

Oh yeah, the preserved vegetable is good too, not very salty.

My dad had told me previously that you could refill the soup for this Bak Kut Teh and was all thumbs-up about it! After procrastinating for so long, I decided to check it out myself.

The location of this mysterious Bak Kut Teh was really secluded! From Marsiling lane, you have to walk all the way in and bypass the 1st coffeeshop (almost thought the mysterious dish was non-existent!). When you get there, you'll know u're in for a good thing! Cos' almost every table has ordered from the Bak Kut Teh stall (take note of the claypots!).

I went straight for my order, and I was served very quickly. On first look, it looks pleasant since I can see greens - lettuce and a few pieces of Taupok (so much for being estatic in my previous review on seeing 1 piece of Taupok in the soup!). I tasted the soup first, and it was ordinary (yes, anti-climax right?). The dark sauce with chilli padi looked good, so I dipped the rib in it and tasted it. It was so good!!! A tinge of bitterness from the chilli padi seeds, another spoonful of soup and there you go! The soup tasted SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! So, now I know! All these must go together - soup, rib, sauce and whoala! Hell of a Pork Rib Soup!!! And best part of it all, you could RE-FILL the soup!!!!!!!! How many stalls allows this nowadays?!?! And another interesting ingredient in the soup - chopped button mushrooms! I love mushrooms!!!

I ordered a side dish too - Preserved vegetables. Surprisingly, this was a sweet dish. A twist to the rich taste of Bak Kut Teh!

Just a word of advice, if you're visiting this place, try and get a seat outside the coffeeshop. I believe location was a factor cos' I was drenched in sweat after dinner (I sat inside).
