Since we have patronized countless times here, a list of must-order items are always in mind already even though at some times, we will try on new ones in their menu. The must-order items are Ten Wonder Duck, Golden Tofu and Prawn Ball with Mayo, which is also recommended by myself to all.

Ten Wonder Duck - Recommended

They actually have other ducks that is prepared with different ingredients or maybe different methods of cooking but we got hooked with Ten Wonder Duck since the first time when their service staff recommended to us. First the duck meat is tender and a little chewy. And you must really have the sauce underneath to drizzle on your bowl of rice. It is awesome. This way really enhance your appetite. The sauce is not very salty but the herbal taste is just right. Not too strong which sometimes you will resist it. Also dip the duck meat with the sauce too. With every bite, you can feel the sauce bursting from the meat. That shows the meat absorb the sauce real fast. For healthy eating, maybe you can don't take the duck skin. I find it a little fatty but you can have it as a whole if you can find a thinner piece of duck skin.

Golden Tofu - Recommended

Why do I love this is because of the crispy skin on the outside and the tasty fillings on the inside. You may think it is just a normal fried tofu that is bland but this isn't at all. I can taste a mix of fish and tofu in it. I guess that's what makes it so nice, tasty and soft. But the sauce on that day is quite salty. And I guess is because of ingredients price up, the broccoli were given lesser than before. But nevertheless, it doesn't stop me from having it. The taste has win my heart.

Prawn Ball with Mayo - Recommended

Because of my love for prawns and especially fried ones, so that is the reason I recommended this even if there are other choices of prawns available. The prawn balls are so crispy and the prawns are fresh too. I must say that I have a thing for prawns and whether fresh or not, they can't escape my expert taste bud. But I do hope that the mayo can be lesser or maybe put it in a sauce plate and if the customers want to dip with it, they can do so or vice versa. Actually I do want to taste the prawn balls without the mayo. I can confirm it will be very nice. Anyway, it depends on individual preference. After all, both versions are okay for me.

I have got not much to comment for this because we want to balance up our meal with a plate of vegetables. But one thing is that the vegetables are confirmed fresh as it is crunchy with a twist of lime to enhance the taste slightly.

Not forgetting, they have Healthier Choice logo on some dishes so keep a lookout if you wanna have a healthy meal. I think some dishes in Tofu and Vegetable category have the logo. That is very obvious for all of us under the Food Pyramid. Order a bowl of rice or try their fried rice menu which is delicious too. I tried that before.

Do try it and also bring any friends that is visiting Singapore to Dian Xiao Er too.

Well went to this restaurant last month during my mom's birthday. There was some confusion with the table allocation and we ended up being seated very late. I have been to Dian Xiao Er other outlets, so far the one that has given me very good impression on service and nice food is at Tampines. Anyway there is going to be a new outlet in Tiong Bahru Plaza. Very near to my place, hopefully will be as good as the one in Tampines.

My friends and i decided to head there to celebrate my friends birthday. i have never been a great fan of Chinese food because i simply am not used to the taste and some things i cant eat...

The place is a very cozy joint... small tables and small stools... not very comfortable for a big guy but anyways it doesn't matter cause i was quite excited about trying out the new food that i was going to taste but with caution...

We ordered braised duck (a first for me), Claypot frog legs (also a first for me) and we ordered claypot beancurd, spinach with some gravy and some sweet and sour pork... each served with rice...

I have got to say, that the sweet and sour pork was quite good... the spinach was healthy... fantastic... and then the bean curd.. really soft served with egg... i liked it...

Then the Taste buds were kind of ready to try out something new... duck first... I took the first bite... hmmm quite nice... taste a bit stronger than chicken.... i felt so like eeiiishh... but i took it down and upon taking the 2nd piece... i was more or less ok with it...

Lastly, I tried the frogs legs... Ok so i had to try and take a small piece at a time.... Hmm taste really strange but i was more or less ok aft mixing with sauce... My friends told me to try out the frog legs porridge at Geylang Lorong 3... Hmm that will take awhile...

Oh wells... it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. Though i am not a very big fan of this... i guess i will be more accustomed to it in the future...

In my opinion 8/10 for everything...

We ordered a few dishes, enough for 5 people - all in SMALL portion.
Managed to clear everything in the end!
Total bill was around $120 - to me it was expensive, given the amount of food, and the quality.

Only main highlight was the herbal roasted duck.
Other than that, nothing to rave about.

I know i know.. the restaurant is very very well-known for their roast duck, and I know my friend would have loved loved loved to order it but thanks for him being very accomodating that I don't really like to eat duck, we ordered chicken instead. I picked the claypot chicken which was a very good pick! A bit gungbao style and the slightly spicy, sweet and salty sauce left me picking the leftover onion and ginger at the bottom of the dish. Heh. The other dish was a very nice pick from my friend-- Stir fried lotus root with macadamia nuts. SOunds very funky huh? its really a unique dish, light in flavour but gave a very wonderful texture. You can imagine the different texture from the lotus roots, macadamia nuts, chestnuts and sweet green peas. I also wanted a soup and the soup of the day was Sichuan veg soup. Light and tasty without the soup being too salty if the preserved veg wasn't handled properly.

Overall I would say the only thing that i could complain about was they probably used alot of cornstartch and oil in the dishes to give it that shiny sheen you see in the picture. Even the healthy dish like the lotus roots dish was a bit oily for me. Other than that, this is definitely a place i would gladly come back to as they have such a variety of food!

Fried Rice with Seafood XO Sauce. It looks like another normal fried rice, but surprising taste super delicious... but the XO Sauce kinda of spicy... no worries cos is still worth trying.

Angelica Herbs Roasted Duck : Being their main specialty - combination of Angelica (Tung Gui) and roasted duck. The duck meat is tender, juicy, the roasted skin is crispy & addictive. Indeed, A MUST TRY !!!

Mongolian Fried Spare Ribs : Cover all over with thick spicy black pepper sauce... The meat is tender, crunchy & juicy... Sauce is rather strong & spicy but still worth trying.

Hot-Boiled Winter Melon Soup with Pork Ribs taste rather normal... Nothing special...

Really worth my thumbs-up... cos their roasted duck is REALLY AWESOME....

Saw that Dian Xiao Er was rather empty one afternoon while I was at Vivocity so popped in for a quick lunch. Legend has it that a Xiao Er (waiter) at a roast duck restaurant combined herbs with roast duck to help his bedridden master recover. The master showed remarkable improvements in his condition and emerged even stronger than before, thus giving rise to the Herbal Roast Duck, which Dian Xiao Er is known for.

All of Dian Xiao Er's restaurants are painstakingly designed to replicate the teahouses of ancient China and the outlet at Vivo certainly looks the part with its wooden beams, grey brick walls and red Chinese lanterns. Tables and chairs were of the wooden variant as well and honestly I felt that everything was cramped too close for comfort. Overhearing the adjourning table's conversation proved too easy for comfort.

Soup of the Day - The soup of the day was lotus root soup, which came across as light and sweet with chunks of meat and lotus root inside. Definitely a great way to start off the meal.

Poached Spinach with Century and Salted Eggs - This method of cooking usually uses 3 types of eggs but I guess Dian Xiao Er decided to go without the normal egg, using only century and salted eggs. I found the vegetables a tad too soft for my liking and the taste struck me as rather ordinary.

Herbal Roast Duck - There have been many claims that a trip to Dian Xiao Er is never complete without ordering the legendary herbal roast duck. I didn't quite attest to those claims though, finding the duck to be less then extraordinary. Maybe I'm just picky but it was really way too sweet for my liking, even though the skin was crisp and the meat firm. Strangely enough, the duck tasted to me like 九层糕 or nine layered cake sans the texture.

Old Style Steamed Fish Slices - I don't know what does old style entail so I shall not comment, but the fish wasn't exactly fresh and that definitely didn't sit well with me. There was really alot of fish leftover when we were done.

Overall the lunch didn't impress me much and it wasn't cheap either, standing at about $60 for 2 pax. Quantity is sufficient but there is much room for improvement quality wise. Until then, I guess I won't be returning to Dian Xiao Er in a hurry.

As for vegetable, their Stir Fried Lotus Root with Macadamia Nut is recommended as well. Not just nice to look at but taste good too! It's a combination of Young Lotus Root, Sweet Beans, Celery, Gingko Nut, Macadamia Nut, Water Chestnut, Carrot. However it's a bit oily for me. So perhaps should ask for less oil next time!

It was a peak period but the service was exceptionally fast.
Wasnt sure what to try at first, but decided on the XO Fried rice, Shrimp with egg, Sweet pea and Celery with cuttlefish and Bee Hoon with fish sauce.
The XO Fried Rice was tantalising - with generous amounts of prawn.
The taste was incredible - really good!
Next came the vegetables - very healthy and cooked just right to retain the wholesome goodness. It was a perfect combination - celery and sweet pea - and the crunchy dried cuttlefish made it extra special.
The egg omelette, called shrimp with egg here - was good as well.
The Bee Hoon with fish sauce - had a distinct flavour and was equally delicious.
Having paid with my UOB card, I was eligible for a $5 dining voucher for my next visit, which will be pretty soon, judging by the great tasting food available.
