Being not so familiar with Holland Village, I have no knowledge that Yee Cheong Yuen has actually been in operation since 1970. Transformation over the years to this little restaurant is indeed necessary to stay competitive especially in this area that is bustled with restaurants.They offers a wide variety of selections ranging from hor fun, noodle and rice for ala carte orders or go for their set meals which is available for 1 to 4 persons. Side dishes, claypot rice are also items available in the menu and not forgetting their roast meats too.As this is our first visit, we ordered the set meal so that we can try a few dishes without over filling our stomachs.2 Persons Set Meal (S$21)The set meal comprises of Oyster Sauce Kai Lan, Dumpling Soup, Luo Han Guo drink, choice of 2 meats (chicken/char siew/roast pork) and choose Hor Fun/Noodles/Rice to complete the meal.Chicken and Roast PorkChoose between white or roast chicken and we went for the former. Skin is smooth and meat is tender. The roast pork is yummy too with the crispy skin and slightly salty meat.Oyster Sauce Kai LanKai lan was soft but some does taste a little bitter and oyster sauce is the best combi for this.Dumpling SoupJust the norm with no surprise factor.Hor FunHor fun is soft and not sticky in texture. The gravy adds flavour to this and yet not too overpowering.RiceYou can opt for plain white rice or chicken rice which I opted for the latter. The chicken rice is so fragrant and smooth yet not too oily.Luo Han Guo (Hot)A little on the sweet side but it sure taste like homemade and its soothing to the throat.Barley (Iced)Though its stated in the menu that it comes with luo han guo drink but I was given the choice of barley. At Holland Village, there was this famous Ipoh Hor Fun stall open since decades ago.They have gone from Kopitiam stall to upmarket restaurant now. The prices also became restaurant prices.I had ordered their orginal famous Chicken Ipoh Horfun.The Chicken meat taste fatty and smooth and tender. I think the chicken meat also goes well with rice.The Horfun was slippery smooth, though not the Ipoh springy type. The gravy taste good with some herbal and braised taste. 繼續閱讀

I have been coming to this shop for Ipoh Horfun and chicken rice for many years now. They have changed hands many times and the restaurant has also downsized alot. Unfortunately the quality of the food has dropped a lot in the recent years leading to less business. However, most of the food is still pretty competent. The chicken is still succulent and served slightly chilled to counter the spicy chilly sauce. The fried wontons are not bad too, being crisp and crunchy. Lunch cost almost $20 a person though!! Very expensive. The siew yok is also good crispy and crunchy on the outside with lots of delicious pork fat. The hor fun is very smooth too with a nice brown sauce. 繼續閱讀

It has been a long while since I've stepped foot into Yee Cheong Yuen. From a bigger coffeeshop outlet, it has now reduced in size but with a newly renovated restaurant-like setting, perhaps to become a bit more up-market. - The arty display of noodles strainers on the wall- Funky new furnitureBesides the usual ipoh hor fun, the menu has expanded to include quite a few others as well. Me and my dining companion decided to try their new dine-in set menu for 2 pax ($21++).You can have 2 choices of either chicken/char siew/roast pork, hor fun/noodles/rice, oyster sauce kai lan, dumpling soup & 2 glasses of Luo Han Guo drinks.Oh boy, we were astonished by the amount of food served. This can definitely fill the stomachs of 2 hungry growing adolescent boys or large eaters and perhaps among 4 ladies. We definitely ate more than we usually do and still cannot finish all the hor fun and the kai lan. For the dumpling soup, there were 5 pieces within. However, I notice that there seemed to be only minced pork within and no shrimp. They tasted ok in general.- Dumpling soupFor chicken, you can have a choice of roasted/white/soya sauce (the one we opted for) chicken. The skin was nicely marinated with soya sauce but the meat within could be more tender. As for the char siew, they were rather thick cuts of lean meat which tasted alright.- Soya sauce chicken & char siewThe really huge plate of kai lan scared us. But the kai lan was of a good quality.- Oyster sauce kai lanAgain another generous serving of smooth hor fun drenched in lots of gravy which was not salty.- An individual serving of hor funAll-in-all, quite a good value is offered for their set meals and the food offered is not bad. My idea of a happy meal, even as a child, was neither a dry hamburger nor chicken nuggets from McDonalds. My comfort food has always been flat rice noodles or hofun that are really smooth. When I crave hofun or when the blues hit, I head over to Yee Cheong Yuen. They started off selling hofun from a stall in a coffee shop nestled among a row of shophouses behind Holland Road Shopping Centre. Now they have upgraded to their own aircon shop a few doors away from where they had first started their business. Other than the prices, nothing about their signature item of ipoh hofun has changed. By not opening other branches elsewhere, the family business has managed the food quality & standards well.I recommend the $7.50 ipoh hofun set which comes with a small bowl of shrimp dumpling soup and a choice of homemade beverages such as barley drink. The thin strands of hofun are really smooth & do not clump together. The hofun is bathed in a tasty thick brown gravy & topped generously with 1cm thick slices of chicken cooked just right, unlike other hofun vendors who handpull the chicken into such measly thin shreds that one can hardly taste the chicken let alone appreciate its texture. The leafy green vegetables that are included in the plate of hofun have been blanched quickly in chicken stock so the stems remain crunchy to the bite. The shrimp dumplings have a good mix of prawn and minced pork, each carefully handwrapped to a plump semi circular pouch. I like the dumplings here because they do not pack in too much black fungus to overshadow the taste of fresh prawns and minced pork. Customers have the option of replacing the hofun with HK style thin egg noodles, and the 'white' chicken with soya sauce chicken. Yee Cheong Yuen sells excellent chicken rice too but it was the hofun that made them famous. Some of my lunch mates rave about their chicken feet but I cant comment since I dont eat that.If you're coming for lunch do try to arrive before 12:30pm as the small shop has limited tables which are taken up quickly.
