Popping by the East Side of Singapore and we got ourselves dinner at Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup. It has been a while since I visited them a few years back and I was surprised by how much they have expanded from just a stall front to a few in the same place.

Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup
Queue was unavoidable during peak period and to be honest parking around the vicinity is not an easy task though Free Parking is available.

Orders were quick to serve, although the soup may looked watery with spring and fried onions. The consistency of herbal taste is good. Rather, it was addictive and I would say there is a good "depth" in the soup.

Texture of Mee Sua was just right and was not too lumpy. I had totally enjoyed the simple tastes through the bowl of soup in mix pork.

Portion was reasonable and lean meat was tender. Kidneys had been well handled leaving no trace of foul smell and what I like best was those thinly sliced livers that was not overly hard to bite on.

Besides being famous for its kidney Mee Sua, they are quite famous for their Cze Char too.

Stirred Fried Vegetables with Garlic
Prawn paste chicken was notable, at least alot better than my last round of prawn paste chicken else where. Exterior was very crispy and at the same time also burning hot as they were just taken out of the oil pot. Just alone without the lime and belachan, they were good enough.

The settings of the eating place make me feel like dining in Malaysia although the currency conversation rate can't really match the comparison. Overall, such specialty is rather unique in Singapore and they had maintained a reputable name throughout the years.

a friend bought 4pax dinner at seng kee black chicken herbal soup, 467 Changi Road. i was here maybe 3yrs back, also a dinner treat from the same friend. ^^

seng kee occupies 2 corner units + one intermediate terrace unit along the terrace shop units adjacent to jalan masjid.

we had a steamed red snapper 1/2 fish head. it was very nice. fish was sweet & tasty. i liked this dish best. ^^

the steamed baby squid was ok, nothing special. somehow the good teochew cold cooked baby squid was a lot sweeter & tastier, but i don’t get to eat that much these days. maybe still can get at teochew porridge stalls.

i liked both the vegetables. the spinach was very good, and the soup with wolfberries & egg was very tasty. same with the sambal potato leaves. loved it.

unfortunately the main event, crab beehoon, one of my favourite dishes, was quite poor. the beehoon did not have any rich infusion of crab flavours. just compare this with the very nice crab beehoon at ming kee on 23.3.2014. or house of steamed fish or golden spoon (though it seemed that golden spoon standard has also dropped substantially??).

there were lots of beehoon, but they tasted like any fried beehoon & not the best ones at that in terms of wok hae, but no hint of crab or shellfish flavours at all! where was the stock?

the crab itself was quit ok. a good, tasty crab, but not really special or outstanding.

the steamed minced pork salted fish was edible, but strangely felt like there was quite a bit of starch in the minced pork. also the pork was well, quite porky (not flavourful but porky). honestly my helper does this a lot better at home.

anyway my friends who frequent seng kee every week gave their feedback to the server & the restaurant did not charge this dish.

the 臭豆 – petai was ok, quite a competent preparation but not a favourite dish for me.

the otah was pretty good for me (again otah not my favourite dish) but my friends who were here quite a lot thought it was poor.

the 4pax dinner came to S$140 or S$35pax. i thought it was quite ok in fact for the food we had, though the main event was the crab beehoon & that was a bit of a let down.

Their herbal mee sua soup is very delicious which comes with the choice of pork meat, pork kidneys, etc. The mee sua tastes great with the chilli. If the soup is not that filling, they also provide other dishes to go along. Free car parking is available opposite of the place, otherwise can park at the open carpark nearby. Kembangan MRT Station is within 10 minutes walking distance.

Located near kembagan MRT station, there is this very famous Tze Char store that sell really good black chicken soup, mee suan and tze char. I ordered 1 mian suan soup and it came with some sliced mushroom. The soup was really flavourful and rich too!Another must order here is the lala. Unlike lala from other place, the lala here is not stir fried with sambal chilli. Instead, it was cooked in spicy sour style which is why it's very appetising to have it!

They seem to hv shifted all operations to the corner bigger unit. New signages are also seen, shouting out more of the steam fish offering. It's a change for the better actually as the place is now brighter and more seats under shelter. There is also a nice basin for hand washing. But all this came with a price. The mee sua no longer comes in 2 sizes but 3 now. $5, $7 and $10. I was still under the impression of the old pricing of $5 and $6 so I ordered the large one and was slapped with the $10

I was still under the impression of the old pricing of $5 and $6 so I ordered the large one and was slapped with the $10 bowl bill. Compared to my friend's small bowl $5 we certainly did not feel it justifies twice the price.

The egg and the veggie tasted ordinary to other zi char stalls. The drinks stall also sells soya beancurd, I like the original flavour. They also sell the almond flavoured one. I'm not a fan of almonds but my friend who likes almonds gave quite a good review for it.

A place to go to for supper or late night dinners, they’re known for their Herbal Mee Sua which you can spot at almost every table. With its name as Herbal Chicken, I was half expecting herbal chicken soup served in pots, only to realise that it’s used as the base for their yo ji mee sua (or pig’s liver vermicelli).

Perhaps they’re bustling with business every day, you don’t exactly get to see service in place and we had to go over to the counter to place our orders with a pretty unresponsive lady who doesn’t bother recommending dishes to first-timers.

Tofu with Chicken Floss ($9)
This seemed pretty normal on the menu but we were looking for something simple and comforting, which we found quite easily in this dish. Crisp on the outside after it’s been lightly fried, the pork floss was a delightful addition for that extra dash of sweetness. Well complemented with the typical starchy sauce for tofu, it was all simplicity at its very best.

Salted Egg Yolk in Sotong Paste ($11)
Attracted to its looks on the menu, the adventurous side in us came out again and decided to give it a shot. The combination gave rise to interesting textures and we loved the crispy ‘claws’ sticking out. It was fried till golden brown, yet no signs of it being too oily (or at least for us). The yolk, though, got a little too overwhelming for us even when it when we tried to combine each mouthful with the sotong paste, and it was quite jelat - feeling as though we were eating the insides of mooncakes. We enjoyed the dish thoroughly though, after removing the egg yolk but that’s our preference so perhaps some yolk lovers would beg to differ!

Pork Ribs ($10)
A classic that I suddenly craved for, this is one that’s hard to go wrong generally, only a matter of good or great. The sauce was thick enough though we thought it was a little too sweet, probably good to have it with some steamed rice with it being so flavourful. The meat itself wasn’t done so well, with the skin fusing with its sauce without being fried briefly for that crisp touch to it. Average dish that could have been better!

Herbal Mee Sua (Vermicelli)
What they were famous for and what got us feeling a tad disappointed. There wasn't a strong herbal taste like what I'd expected and the subtle herbal side to it surfaced only after further mouthfuls. I'd have preferred either a stronger herbal taste or the type with a light broth, while this happened to fall in between. Some would like it for the subtleness though, especially if you're not so much a fan of herbal soups. The vermicelli was done well though, it wasn't the overly sticky starchy kind that gets you feeling jelat easily.

We'd ordered the mix of pig's liver and kidney to go with the mee-sua, while I liked the right thickness of the cuts, it wasn't too fresh and had a strong porky taste to it. Overall a decent bowl of mee-sua but not spectacular enough to travel all the way there for it!

It was almost packed when we went there on a weekday night and we were glad to find that the whole row of seats outside belonged to them, as they've gotten 3 stall spaces along that row. It may look slightly different in terms of the signboard colours that we got confused initially. Not sure whether it was just the day we went or just their normal that there wasn't any service to speak of, where their staff simply ignored us that eventually we went to the counter to place our orders and our request for additional plates never came despite asking for 4-5 times.

Generally a good place for group hangouts and decent food that was pretty worth it, as you could see we were both stuffed after ordering so much (probably good for 3 pax) and the total bill came up to about $47.

Apparently Seng Kee Black Chicken Soup is really big here! You won't miss this place if you're travelling along Changi Road opposite Kembangan MRT Station. In fact, it's just 5 mins from Kembangan MRT on foot - just cross the road and walk along the park connector beside the canal to the row of shophouses up ahead.

This was the stall we ordered our food from.

They are open from 5pm - 4am (read: good supper haunt), but the place was already full by 5.45pm. All the tables were taken. Needless to say, there was also a queue infront of the stall.

Baby Coconut Drink, $3
I totally love this! I get a little disappointed whenever I order a coconut drink and get served an old coconut that tastes bitter, with its flesh so hard and rough that I couldn't even scrap it off with a metal spoon. Luckily they offer baby coconuts here. The juice is really sweet and fragrant! Just look at how soft and smooth the flesh is! Somebody even commented that I looked so blissful helping myself to this refreshing drink!

Kidney Mee Sua (Mixed), $5
腰只麺缐

Star of the day is none other than this mouth-watering bowl of mee sua. There are a few choices: kidney, pork slices and mixed (consisting of kidney, liver and pork slices). To be frank, I like pork innards done like how I love my beef done - cooked through but still soft and tender to the bite. To achieve this, the ingredients should be immersed in the soup to cook for just a short while. The pork liver and kidney here are firmer than how I would usually prefer, BUT (this is a big BUT thus the caps) I was blown away by how overwhelming it tasted. The distinct herbal soup base had been infused with lots of pork fragrance! The delicate mee sua also soaked up the intense taste of the soup. I don't usually eat alot in terms of quantity, but I finished up this entire bowl, not even sparing a drop of soup.

Another highly-recommended dish here. The fish meat is soft, nicely flavoured with a balanced amount of salted vegetables and tomatoes, giving it that enjoyable slight tinge of saltiness and sourness. I like to eat the fish meat along with some delicious sauce!

脆香虾片

Although you won't be able to bite into chunks of prawns since they have been mashed up and mixed with other ingredients to be fried as slices wrapped in beancurd skin, you can still discern their obvious presence here by their taste. The crispiness of the fried beancurd skin roll is addictive. Dip it in the mayonnaise served on its side for better flavour!

Prawn Omelette, $8
虾肉煎蛋

Perhaps it was a pity that this was the last dish to be served, but I wasn't too impressed. My palette might have been too pampered by all the stronger-flavoured dishes served before this. I've tasted plain omelettes that are delicious on their own, and prawns if well-prepared should bear some tinge of savory sweetness with seafood flavour. I couldn't make out much taste in this, but to be fair I wouldn't discredit it either, since it wasn't that bad. Probably a little more salt would do the trick to give it more taste.

Even though the restaurant may not be spacious and quite noisy, but the foods taste so good that I do not mind to revisit here with my family members next times.

Heard rave reviews about the mee sua over here, so came here specially with a group of friends to try out this place. I was surprised to see that the whole stretch of stalls all belonged to the same shop. In spite of there being so many seats available, the place still got filled up pretty quickly. Service was quite prompt and efficient - our server gladly moved our large table from outside to inside beneath their rolled-out shelters upon our request, as we were not sure if it was going to rain later. Each of us ordered the signature herbal mee sua - you can choose pork slices, liver or kidney to go with your mee sua. Greedy me chose the combination one as usual.

- Mee sua showing the pork slices/liver/kidney

The herbal soup was really tasty, it was quite thick and hearty without being too heavy on the palate. I could not identify the actual herbs that went into the soup, but they did definitely put some in it. For $4.50 a bowl, I'll say it's pretty worth it based on the effort that went into brewing the soup. The pork slices were ok, and the liver and kidney were cooked just nice and had no "porky" smell.

Besides the signature mee sua, the stall offers a lot of other zi char dishes as well.

- Steamed pomfret

For $30, we got a rather big steamed pomfret. The fish meat was steamed just right and there a lot of ingredients added (teochew style I'll say). Pretty tasty but then the fish still had just a tiny bit of fishiness to it which could not be covered up by the accompanying ingredients.

- Ngoh Hiang

The ngoh hiang was pretty good, there were fresh prawns and pork inside and the marinade was tasty. The coating was thin too and fried to a nice brown crisp. Tasted really good when dipped with the side sweet sauce. Oishii! I liked the achar dish that came with it too.

- Omelette

The omelette we had was fried with minced pork meat inside. Tasted not bad. The chilli sauce that came with it was really interesting - I don't think there's any like it else where. It has a really different tangy taste to it - cannot really place the taste. It reminded me of a type of sweet (in a wrapper) that I ate when I was young. The others at the table did not really like this special chilli sauce. Unique but weird.

- Stir-fried tapioca leaves

The tapioca leaves had quite a generous amount of ground dried shrimp in it and the spice level was ok. Generally rather tasty.

This is quite a good place to hangout for zi char and especially the herbal mee sua. Well come back again

One of the best dinner options for a rainy day, Seng Kee kidney mee sua. This stall has been expanding continuously, now it actually almost the entire row of shop-houses less the motorbike shop. There's even air conditioned option now, not sure if there's a difference in price though. But i will usually sit at the main shop front. That's where you get to choose the different fish slices on offer. Most of the seats at the main stall area is outdoor style with plastic chairs, nice and cooling i wo

As i came alone this time, i ordered the big bowl of mee sua all for myself. There was no more kidney left so i settled for pork and liver combination.

I must say they are pretty consistent with their soup taste standard and be warned, the chilli offered is really spicy but being a flavorful soup base, with that additional tinge of spice its always quite exciting

The mee sua is also garnish with green onions and fried shallots. Next time i will opt for just green onions to make the soup less oily. Anyway I strongly recommend diners to have the big bowl individually, you will not be disappointed. I've never tried another stall with such unique soup taste. Soup is dark colored and not too starchy. The mee sua is also of good quality and does not stick together. You pay after all your food is delivered. My big bowl costs $6. Place is a popular supper joint as its opened till 4am.
