You have a choice of whether to add milk to your fish soup. To have an extra "shiokness", You can add the red chilli provided to the soup. After we finished the soup, we saw some brown powdery sediment which should be grounded dried sole fish which adds flavour to the soup.Fried fish meat soup @$5.80Fresh fish slices fried to lovely golden brown in a rich and flavourful broth. This restaurant was tucked at a small alley at Tan Quee Lan Street but it's hard to miss it as it's so crowded with long queue forming outside. Luckily, my colleagues were there early and we've gotten a table and seats when we reached. They don't allow reservation to be make in advance so it's a first come first serve basis. Their prawn paste chicken are well seasoned. Crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The prawn paste taste is just right and not too strong. It's a finger licking dish!Next dish is their Sauteed Twin Mushrooms with green vegetable. I love their oyster sauce and fresh mushroom and vegetable. Their fried Hong Kong Mee is well prepared though the serving is a little bit small. Next is their Assam Curry Fish head and fried fish soup with milk. The Assam Curry Fish head is loaded with brinjal, cabbage, long beans, tomatoes and tau pok so there's something for everyone. The use of spices is just nice and again did not come as too over whelming. The fried fish soup is delicious too with milk. Have it while it's hot. They offer a variety of fishy dishes which includes charcoal fish head steamboat, asam fish head and of couse what I usually get, the fish sliced noodles. Oh! If you enjoy sweet-sour drinks, try Mama, a lemony-plum concoction! It’s pretty refreshing.I got myself the fried fish sliced noodles with milk. Anyway, for the health-conscious, you can opt for a healthier unfried sliced fish bee hoon without milk. Personally, I prefer my fish sliced noodles with milk because it makes the soup sweeter and tastier! The soup base is not diluted and You can also get fish soup with a separate order of rice, fish porridge, and even fish head bee hoon soup noodle!The soup has five big chunks of fried fish and a good serving of vegetables. One of the greatest challenges of work life is finding good and cheap lunch deals, especially for most freshgrads with unfortunate paychecks. But lucky for those who work around the Bugis area, they have Xin Yuan Ji, where they can find good zi char and sliced fish noodles at reasonable prices.THE FOOD:Xin Yuan Ji enjoys a constant stream of customers at all times of the day and especially so during lunch hours. Office workers swarm in from about 11.30am onwards for its affordable set lunches (under $6) on weekdays.Favourites on the menu are the sweet and sour pork lunch set, the pork ribs lunch set and the seafood hor fun ($5). However, small portions are often an issue with customers. But make some noise with the servers and a upsized portion will be delivered promptly.The assam curry fishhead ($20) - red snapper in sweet and spicy gravy - has been rather raved about but we much preferred the fish beehoon soup ($4.50) for a healthier and more cost-effective lunch. A generous portion of fresh fish is used with a well balanced amount of tomatoes and bitter gourd. Tasty and definitely healthier than most other lunch options.The other must-order dish is the prawn paste chicken wings ($8 for six pieces). The wings are freshly fried; crispy on the outside, tender and juicy in the inside. The taste of the prawn paste is evident but not overwhelming. While we dare not claim it is the best in Singapore, it is definitely one dish that will not disappoint.THE MOOD:What mood? No mood larh. Extremely packed and noisy with all sorts of characters during lunch hours, this is no place for a relaxed chat with a colleague you are interested in. Sharing tables is not uncommon here and despite the many tables, including makeshift ones, customers often have to rush down at 12noon sharp or risk joining in a queue under the hot Singapore sun.There are no GST and service charges here. And perhaps that is why service is known to be substandard here. We advise you to remind the servers at 10 minute intervals till your food is served.All in all, the lack of ambience is worth enduring for the air-con and reasonably priced Fish Beehoon soup.
