Though the restaurant doesn't really advertise that the cuisine is Taiwanese so much, it's rather authentic. The fried chicken pieces were hot when they came out and had fried basil leaves too. However, the pepper/salt combination that usually accompanies it wasn't so apparent.

The highlight of the meal really was the Stewed Pork over Rice and the Beef Noodles.
The Stewed Pork over rice had pretty much the texture and taste that you'd normally eat at the local food stalls in Taiwan--of course, at a more hefty price.

The Beef Noodles' soup was pretty much on the dot as well, however, the noodle could have been more al dente and more similar to the traditional beef noodles. It is, however, rather difficult to get the correct taste for the beef soup so I think it's a good job already. Beef pieces could have been a bit more tender and chewy though as they were rather hard and not as juicy.

Friend ordered the jasmine milk tea and I had the guava float which was pretty good. Could have opted for no Konnyaku jelly though as it reminded me of the tadpoles that Singapore desserts sometime have.

my friend suggested that we go try out the lunch promotion at lai lai causal dining. Apparently they have an additional lunch menu on top of the normal menu. I ordered their chicken cutlet with mushroom sauce. The chicken cutlet is really large in size, the meat inside a big slab. It was tender and juicy. the mushroom sauce is very tasty, went well with the rice and chicken. The pickled vegetable is too sour for me, didn’t like it. But nevertheless, it was pretty filling.

Everytime I go to lai lai, I always miss the lunch promotion. I was lucky this time to reach just in time for the lunch menu. What caught my eyes were the large cutlet set meal. When they served me my sweet and sour chicken cutlet, I was served by the portion. For the price I was paying, the chicken cutlet was so huge. The chicken cutlet was deep fried till very crispy. The batter coating the chicken was very fragrant. The chicken was so tender and juicy. They were very generous with the sauce. The sweet and sour sauce actually taste pretty good, well absolutely well with the chicken. The rice they used seemed to be the Japanese sticky rice kind. They also included some pickled vegetables. My advice to all is to eat it bit by bit. I happily put half of it into my mouth and I almost fainted from the sourness of the vegetable. It was so sour and the sourness does linger in your mouth for a pretty long time.

Not too sweet and serving size was large too, they had either the green milk tea or red milk tea , of which i chose the green one. However I would have prefers more pearls. The salt peppered chicken came next and was quite similar to those you find from Taiwanese delicacy stores. This one tasted a little floury and oily though, and could have done with less oil, but otherwise still quite tasty. Lastly came the beef noodle with soup. The soup as wonderful and well flavoured with thick chucks of beef. this is probably the dish they are most famous for. The whole set was less than $15, a bargain!

I had a yummy lunch at Lai Lai that day. Besides the famous beef noodles that they serve, they have other lunch set meals too, including the sambal chicken cutlet meal together with a cup of milk tea with pearls. It is my favourite side dish at Lai Lai. Served as a side dish, it looks like a main dish because the portion is just huge. The batter on the bringal is light and crisp, goes perfectly well with the pork floss! I would go back to Lai lai just for this side dish!!

Had a satisfied dinner at Lai Lai Casual Dinning. Ordered my friend's recommend dish Beef noodle, really love the beef noodle soup is light and the taste is good. I ordered a set so it came along with a side dish and a drink. The crispy chicken was yummy and the milk tea was just okay, I don't really like the drink. But overall with a great dinning at Lai Lai, the set price was really affordable . Thumb up!

The cold dish silken tofu with century is pretty alright. I am not a huge fans of the sweet black sauce though. But overall speaking, this dish is cooling and appetizing.

The vegetable stew balances up the meal. Wombok is simmered with mushroom till tender and very soft. It tastes like mum's cooking.

Jostled with the crowds to have a go Lai Lai Casual Dining - a seemingly popular beef noodles cum pseudo Taiwanese eatery. There was a steady stream of people queuing up to get a seat in the eatery so we naturally assumed that this place was of a certain acceptable standard.

The bulk of the seating at this eatery is open concept, which means that people from the upper levels of the mall can view you from the top and tables are squeezed uncomfortably close to each other to maxmize revenue. And honestly, the cow on the menu looked like it had just been hit by mad cow disease.

Fried Beancurd - This dish was very run off the mill. Crisp on the outside but not soft on the inside, the beancurd was overly deep fried which resulted in a harder then usual exterior.

Pepper Salt Chicken - This dish was another disappointment. I mean, how bad can chicken taste like right Wrong! The chicken had more flour then meat and came across as tough, bland and oily. Can someone tell me where the salt and pepper went

Taiwan Beef Noodle - Lai Lai's purported signature/star dish and I have to admit that it was the best amongst all the other terrible dishes. Not that it was anywhere near what I had expected initially when I was still in the queue. The noodles were of the flatter variant and carried a bit of bite but the soup wasn't flavourful enough. The beef pieces, which amounted to about 4 - 5, came across as a tad too tough.

Taiwan Vermicelli - The only time I ate Taiwan vermicelli aka mee sua was when I was still a kid and my grandmother would cook it for me during my Chinese birthday. Though its been a long time since I last ate mee sua, I don't remember it tasting as awful as Lai Lai's rendition. The soup was very starchy and not to mention bland. Ingredients were minimal as well and half of bowl of the vermicelli remained, for obvious reasons.

On hindsight, the queues were probably formed due to the herd mentality of Singaporeans and definitely not for the food quality. Our dinner cost the 2 of us $30, which isn't expensive for a dinner, but definitely expensive for such quality of food. Never again!

For drinks they have quite a list consisting of bubble tea and fruit juices etc. Do try the jasmine bubble tea(img2), its even better than the normal milk tea bubble tea. For sides, the $14 set comes with nicer sides like the fried chicken, century egg tofu and cabbage. The $13 set comes with sides that are also nice, but just not as impressive like cold tofu, fried tofu, kailan, saba fish. We tried the cold tofu (img 4) which was topped with mince meat sauce - A MUST TRY.

My side dish & drinks came first and after I finish it my main dish has not arrive hence I waited patiently till approximate half an hour later both my colleagues were almost done with their meals yet my main dish was nowhere to be seen.

So I check with one of the waitress politely on the status of my beef noodles and she returned to inform me that it will take another 2 mins to be ready. After a long while, my noodles finally arrived at my table and to my surprise (Look at the pix!!)

It came with 'SPECIAL' ingredients in it :

Could you see HOW MUCH pepper and spicy oil was added into it

Frankly speaking, I am sure that the cook did that on purpose just because I check on the status of my noodles ONCE. I really can't imagine what I'll be getting if I am those type of nasty customer that make a huge fuss on the spot after waiting for so long.

This is definitely NOT the 1st time I had dine in Lai Lai (Jurong Point) before, in fact it is the 5th time and during my every visit I only order set A because I like beef noodles and I'm someone who can't take spicy stuff.

And after having some of the noodles, my stomach gets a little upset and my face was burning hot as it is really spicy! This is going to be my LAST visit at their Jurong point outlets and I'm not going to recommend any of my friends to visit this restaurant again.

DINE THERE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I reckon it's quite economic to pay $12.50++ for a set meal that consists of a main (noodles or rice), a side dish and pearl tea! Very filling and satisfying. The braised pork rice with peanut and egg tasted a bit ordinary. The braised pork was a bit too dry and not enough gravy kind of. But the egg was yummy! Taiwan vermicelli was yummy with vinegar and pepper added. The portion is just right for a lady too. You can choose 1 topping (of 3 choices - pig intestine, pork meatball, shredded chicken

For side-dishes, we ordered boneless braised pork knuckle. It was so delicious! Very well-marinate, well flavoured, and the fat and the meat were so tender that they just melted in your mouth!

However, the fried brinjal with pork floss was a huge disappointment! The coated flour was so thick that you will be eating just the fried flour every bite.. and worst thing was .. they are not crispy, and a bit under-seasoned.

Apart from the set meal, we also ordered the famous Cong Jua Bing with egg ($5.50). With $1 top up, you can choose to add either cheese, ham, pork floss or pineapple. We have tried both cheese and pineapple. The cheese topping was tasty as the melted cheese gave more flavour to the 'egg prata', whereas the pineapple topping was too blend in taste, not a good choice I would say.

Beef noodle is a must for us as it is so famous in Taiwan. We have beef noodle of course, braised intestine, floss with fried chicken and 2 ice bubble tea. Bubble tea was fine without funny taste. Floss with fried chicken was good, crispy and taste right, it was a bit oily to our taste towards the end of the meal. Here came to the braised intestine and beef noodle, probably we have too high expectation, it came out below our prospect. Both dishes tasted bland, though they were soft and tender, it just didn’t have the kick or the taste it should be.

Overall taste was OK.

I was expecting this eatery to be a corner kiosk, but was pleasantly surprised it has "equal standing" with other eateries such as Thai Express, in terms of space.

My friend and I were promptly ushered to our seats and food was served quickly after we made our orders. We ordered the following:

Meatball Soup
The soup was flavourful!! Meatballs were big, and makes a good alternative to the other rice and noodle mains.

Pepper Salt Chicken
On first look, it just looks like ordinary fried chicken pieces. But it was really delicious!!! I could taste the pepper within, but it wasn't to the extent of "hot". The chicken wasn't salty too. All fried chicken lovers should give a shot at this dish! Also, there are also some green leaves served with the dish, which I think are deep-fried. Its taste blends with the chicken when eaten together. Wonderful!

Fried Tofu
This dish was ordered by mistake. My friend had ordered the set meal, where there is 1 side dish. We assumed that that side dish would be served in as a smaller serving, hence ordered this in place of the Century Egg Tofu (Cold Tofu), which we would like to try in a larger serving. Nothing special about this dish, only that the tofu was well-fried, i.e. not over-fried until the skin becomes tough. The sauce that accompanies iy tasted bland, even though there were chilli bits in it. I loved the bits of sour cabbage which came with this dish. They gave a refreshing taste.

Century Egg Tofu (Cold Tofu)
I like the flaky bits on this tofu. Never knew what it was, but it was nice! The century egg wasn't too "intense" in taste, hence it was palatable to me. Good combination of food here.

Iced Jasmine Green Tea
This was in fact, a bubble tea. The drink was rather sweet in the beginning, but after the ice has melted, it was just right. The pearls in this drink can top that of Koi's, Gong Cha and Froggy Tea! They're smaller and the texture is also softer, without losing the chewiness. Also, the serving of pearls was just right. I get sick of bubble teas sometimes when the amount of pearls overwhelm the drink, even after I requested for the pearls to be halved in amount! So, give the bubble tea here a shot!

(On this note, if you have ordered hot teas, they come served with pearls as well! Interesting!)

Braised Pork Belly with Egg
This is 1 sinful dish! But with every sin, comes pleasure! The braised pork was really SO SO SO good!!!!!!!!!! The BEST DISH out of all the above dishes!!! The pork simply absorbs all the flavours with it! Moreover, it was cut into small pieces, hence you could devour the fats in the pork, without feeling guilty (whatever fats will seem insignificant, due to the small cuts). The only shame is, they didn't include this dish as a side dish in the set meal, even when i offered to top up the difference. It has to be ordered as an ala carte side dish, or as braised pork rice. Too much rigidity for a good dish like this! Guess "Lai Lai" could also explore combining this dish with their vermicelli! I would probably KO from this combination!

Total Cost: Meatball Soup - $6.90
Pepper Salt Chicken - $4.20
Century Egg Tofu - $4.50
Iced Jasmine Green Tea - $3.50
Braised Pork Belly with Egg - $8.90

I went with some of my colleagues to lai lai for lunch. As always, I will order their set meal, the pig large interest is one of the nicest there. I have tried many large intestines from kway chap stalls but none of them are comparable to lai lai’s. I always like to eat it with the fried shallots in chilli oil dip. Gives the intestine an extra spicy flavor!
