They pride themselves not only serving authentic Japanese food but also of having a homely environment and homely meal. From the interior decoration to the food served at the cafe bar, the same theme resonate throughout.What I find most attractive about Ippin Cafe Bar is that the uses the products that are sold in the outlet to cook their food served. Should one be interested to cook it at home, diner could approach the staff to enquiry and whip a storm at home.Ippin Cafe Bar has recently introduced an exciting new menu. The first three on the table were appetiser. There are Salmon Kelp Roll ($8 NETT); Sardine & Walnut ($5 NETT) and Ayu, Sweetfish ($5 NETT). All these are soy sauce based as such all of these dishes has a sweet hint.The good news is that you could bring them home in convenience pack if you like any of these appetisers.Next is the Rice Ball with Green Onion Miso ($5 NETT). This is a simple dish where one could make at home easily by purchasing the Green Onion Miso, mixed it with rice and seaweed. Lastly roll the rice into a ball and wrap it in a clear wrap. Then enjoy at your convenience. For the taste, once again, there is a sweet flavour note emitted from the green onion miso.Chawa mushi ($8 NETT) is the next dish newly introduced. It is cooked with the Dashi Sauce available at the outlet too. This Chawa mushi is creamy, smooth and silky and beneath it were treasures of ingredients such as crab stick, chicken meat and mushroom. Personally, I find the amount of egg too little in this cup of Chawa mushi.The only savoury dish that tasted briny is the Stir-fried potato & pork with garlic sauce ($8 nett). This dish goes very well with rice. Personally, I find it a little too oily. And most find that Ippin Cafe Bar is too generous with the amount of salt added.Beef with mushroom sauce and potato salad ($30 nett) is another new dish. The mushroom sauce was far too sweet for us. We thought it would be better if the beef could be with medium doneness instead of well done.Omu-rice with Karaage, fried chicken ($18 nett) is made different at Ippin Cafe Bar. Instead of having a tomato based rice, at Ippin, they provided a Soy Sauce based rice wrapped within the omelette. The Karaage seems to be using breast meat as such I find it a little dry and tasteless.Darjeeling Tea Jelly was served before our final dish, the dessert. This is such a wonderful dessert. It has a nice sweet tea scent. Everyone at the table enjoyed this to the max.Bread Pudding with Green Tea ($10 nett) was the last dish of the night. I was skeptical about this dish initially as it was a can food for emergency situation such as during the earthquake. I was wrong about it. The bread pudding was so fluffy and creamy and smooth. When it was eaten together with the ice cream, it was heavenly. The yuzu sauce that was drizzled over the dish provided a tangy and refreshing flavour.We tried the Houjicha too. The tea leaves were from India and roasted in Japan. This is a light version. It is available at the outlet at $7 per pack.All the products sold at Ippin Cafe Bar are exclusively imported for them only. And these are mainly from the SME in Japan. They believe supporting these SME.Since it is a bar as well, how could alcohol be missing? For the Japanese, it will certainly be the well beloved Sake. Sake tasting set ($15 NETT/set of 3) is also available. Request it from their friendly in-house Sake Sommelier to help you select your choice sake.Ippin Cafe provides a wide variety of Sake ranging from the traditional Sake to the fruity and even the yogurt sake.Some of the new selection available are the Yogurt Sake, Plain ($30 NETT), Yogurt Tochi Otome Strawberry ($31 NETT), Yutou Masamune ($51 NETT), Miracle Sake Junmai ($29 NETT), Mongai Sake ($19 NETT), Mongai Sake Cup ($16 NETT) and the Yoichi Densho Oensen Jinozo ($141 NETT).I like the homely feel of the place and the homely food. Best of all, they also sell the ingredients that they used in the menu too!

The business is run by Miss Ayumi Fujishiro, daughter of IPPIN's owner. At the first sight of this lady, I have totally no clue that she is a Japanese as she speaks perfect Singlish and in fact before that I have asked if she is a local. Besides serving home cook meals, IPPIN also serves as a one stop shop with a section on the merchandise whereby people get to find goods directly imported from Japan like rice, noodle, tea, beverages as well as kitchen essentials. At a closer look on those items, I could not remember seeing them in Japanese marts like Isetan or even Mediya thus it marked all the differences.Place was rather cozy and ambiance has given us a "feel at home" feeling. If you want to hook onto the cyber world, free WIFI service is available here. Besides having merchandise and serving Japanese Food, IPPIN also catered a cooking corner for those who want to learn more about Japanese dishes.Up the little steps to somewhere near the kitchen, you may get to see this little space artistically decorated by these art pieces from Children age 4 to 15. Interested in getting one of them or even creating one of them? They are actually located along the same road too in Mohamed Sultan.More information on the children art classes and name cards are found here. Since IPPIN is more towards the classic home based food in Japan, you won't find typical Singapore Japanese Food chains here like, bento, sashimi, sushi or Katsu here. They kind of opened up a bigger picture to my dictionary of Japanese Food and saying this, they have a condiment rack with Hiroshima is the number one landing of oysters in Japan and here we are, welcoming such big, thick and tasty oysters grilled in ponzu (yuzu vinegar) butter sauce achieving such refreshing taste. Besides being popular in size, these oysters were actually raised in clean ocean to attain such a clean taste. The set comes with rice (with barley), Hatcho miso soup, yummy Nikujaga pork and potato stew, salad and houjicha pudding (roasted green tea dessert), totally worth the value.Love this side dish, it was a good comfort dish with tender sliced pork and the combination of potatoes with carrots gave a sweet starchy taste to the dish. Glass noodle was included and had well adsorbed the stew. It goes very well with a bowl of plain rice or even good enough to be served as a dish.Another way of serving oysters was to have them deep fried! Likewise, these Oysters are originated from Hiroshima.Comes in 5 on a plate, these oysters were lightly battered and deep fried into its attractive crispiness. Apart from the way of serving the oysters, the sides in the set remains the same. On a good note, the egg mayonnaise and wasabi dip was very refreshing for the fried oyster, what I like about the dip was that you can actually get to see the ingredients of the dip like hard boil egg whites and cuts of cucumber. Just take a closer look at the deep fried oysters, aren't they beautifully done up?Chicken pieces was plump and tender, well accentuated by the dashi (stock). Having Oyakudon for a Japanese meal is usually my favourite out of their rice dishes for it tasted so fragrant with its mild sweet stock with eggs and chicken. Wettness level was abit high, nevertheless it was still a good tasty bowl of Oyakudon. This set comes with miso soup, hojicha pudding too.Fried Soba aka Yakisoba is unique and had caught hold of my appetite during dinner. No doubt it is any Japanese comfort food, it is seldom found in most Japanese restaurant and the secret to this dish is none other than their savoury sauce.Yellow onions, carrots, cabbages and meat were mixed in giving additional texture to the tasty noodles.Having said this, this dish is remind Miss Ayumi Fujishiro , owner of the IPPIN's daughter, on her dad's home cooking, so feel at home! The set also comes with small dish (Kobachi). Having tea after meal is good and its tea appreciation session. We had the chance to try out the most popular green tea, Sencha which has a perfect balance of refreshing aroma, delicate sweetness and mild bitterness. In order to have good tea served, server has to seized the right timing and temperature of water. GEnmaicha and Hojicha area also available. For those who don't really take Sake, do try out this fruitty flavoured drinks and rest assured that you may get hook to them. In fact, this was the best recommended by one of the service staff. With 17% alcohol content and you can even taste the pulps among the drink. The taste was both sweet with a little sour just like the taste of Ichigo, strawberries in Japanese.Besides having Strawberries Flavour, there is also Yuzu. It tasted both as great but my vote will goes to the former.These peanuts are totally driving me nuts, coated and available in 3 flavours, serious coffee, creamy strawberry and grassy matcha. They are not only addictive but also something interesting to take note of.On the right, the wobbly Hojicha pudding. The style did not fit me as I find that the Tea taste was a little too strong here which turned out to be bitter. Overall, IPPIN did really stand up in terms of serving classic hearty Japanese home style food with competitive pricing. It is an absolute spot to hit if you want to enjoy something different from the usual Japanese fare.

The Yakisoba set (SGD12) is the unassuming choice.Yakisoba set comes with yakisoba, kobachi and matcha pudding.Richly flavoured, the deep fried oyster set (SGD24) exudes a homely feel with the fragrance of the Nikujaga pork and potato stew wafting around the moment it is served. The oysters are also lightly battered to ensure a thin layer of crispiness on the outside and juicy oyster meat on the inside.Deep fried oyster set comes with rice (with barley), 6pcs deep fried oysters, Hatcho miso soup, Nikujaga pork and potato stew, salad and matcha pudding.The Oyakodon set (SGD15) features especially oishii chicken boiled with the dashi stock and egg on rice, which makes for a wonderfully comforting dish and generously proportioned too! I would imagine this is the one I would order when I am here.Oyakodon set comes with chicken and egg rice, miso soup, and matcha pudding.The crowd-pleaser goes to the ginger pork with rice set (SGD15) which reflects how the syoga-yaki (fried ginger pork) is immensely popular in Japan too! This is the tried and tested successful formula that whets the appetite. The pork is thoroughly marinated with sweet soy and ginger, which is just perfect to re-create this homely dish, just better.Ginger pork with rice set comes with rice (with barley), ginger pork, Hatcho miso soup, salad and matcha pudding.One of their unique desserts is the hojicha pudding which is really lovely to have, smooth texture with a refreshing tea taste with a little malt feel. If you drop by Ippin, try this too.If you like oysters, Ippin Cafe Bar has them too, goes beautifully with their hand-picked premium selection of sakes and beers - check out their collection!The owners of Ippin Cafe Bar personally selected their favourites to bring it all the way from Japan's top prefectures to this little corner in Singapore - be sure to try their tsutsmi brewery plum wine kurahachi umeshu - 720ml (SGD29) which is particularly unique, which is lighter than normal wines, with a hint of sour plum that is quite addictive! It may be known as a hidden gem or one’s usual hangout for the comfort food, and not forgetting a drink to unwind from the hectic work life.They offer set meals like Oyakudon Set [$15] - Chicken and egg on rice (served slightly 'wetter'), hence those who prefer it dry, this may not be for you. The secret of oishii is dashi (stock), the chicken is boiled with dashi, that explains why it is so juciy! The set is served with Hatcho miso soup, salad and houjicha (roasted green tea) pudding. Definitely my go to for comfort food during rainy weather.For oysters lover, there is also a Deep Fried Oyster Set [$24]. These oysters are raised in clean ocean so be ready for a clean taste, yay to no more fishy taste! The oysters are lightly battered to golden brown, where it is crispy on the outside and still moist and tender on the inside. The set is served with rice (with barley), Hatcho miso soup, Nikujaga pork and potato stew, salad and houjicha (roasted green tea) pudding.To go along with the meals, try the Marumo Mori Genmaicha The One tea (Genmaicha, Sencha, Houjicha). My favourite is Houjicha! Of cause, premium sake are also available.
