Ippin Cafe Bar is nestled along the stretch of drink holes at Mohammad Sultan is also home to many Japanese Restaurant. They pride themselves not only serving authentic Japanese food but also of having a homely environment and homely meal. From the interior decoration to the food served at the cafe bar, the same theme resonate throughout.

What I find most attractive about Ippin Cafe Bar is that the uses the products that are sold in the outlet to cook their food served. Should one be interested to cook it at home, diner could approach the staff to enquiry and whip a storm at home.

Ippin Cafe Bar has recently introduced an exciting new menu. The first three on the table were appetiser. There are Salmon Kelp Roll ($8 NETT); Sardine & Walnut ($5 NETT) and Ayu, Sweetfish ($5 NETT). All these are soy sauce based as such all of these dishes has a sweet hint.

The good news is that you could bring them home in convenience pack if you like any of these appetisers.

Next is the Rice Ball with Green Onion Miso ($5 NETT). This is a simple dish where one could make at home easily by purchasing the Green Onion Miso, mixed it with rice and seaweed. Lastly roll the rice into a ball and wrap it in a clear wrap. Then enjoy at your convenience. For the taste, once again, there is a sweet flavour note emitted from the green onion miso.

Chawa mushi ($8 NETT) is the next dish newly introduced. It is cooked with the Dashi Sauce available at the outlet too. This Chawa mushi is creamy, smooth and silky and beneath it were treasures of ingredients such as crab stick, chicken meat and mushroom. Personally, I find the amount of egg too little in this cup of Chawa mushi.

The only savoury dish that tasted briny is the Stir-fried potato & pork with garlic sauce ($8 nett). This dish goes very well with rice. Personally, I find it a little too oily. And most find that Ippin Cafe Bar is too generous with the amount of salt added.

Beef with mushroom sauce and potato salad ($30 nett) is another new dish. The mushroom sauce was far too sweet for us. We thought it would be better if the beef could be with medium doneness instead of well done.

Omu-rice with Karaage, fried chicken ($18 nett) is made different at Ippin Cafe Bar. Instead of having a tomato based rice, at Ippin, they provided a Soy Sauce based rice wrapped within the omelette. The Karaage seems to be using breast meat as such I find it a little dry and tasteless.

Darjeeling Tea Jelly was served before our final dish, the dessert. This is such a wonderful dessert. It has a nice sweet tea scent. Everyone at the table enjoyed this to the max.

Bread Pudding with Green Tea ($10 nett) was the last dish of the night. I was skeptical about this dish initially as it was a can food for emergency situation such as during the earthquake. I was wrong about it. The bread pudding was so fluffy and creamy and smooth. When it was eaten together with the ice cream, it was heavenly. The yuzu sauce that was drizzled over the dish provided a tangy and refreshing flavour.

We tried the Houjicha too. The tea leaves were from India and roasted in Japan. This is a light version. It is available at the outlet at $7 per pack.

All the products sold at Ippin Cafe Bar are exclusively imported for them only. And these are mainly from the SME in Japan. They believe supporting these SME.

Since it is a bar as well, how could alcohol be missing? For the Japanese, it will certainly be the well beloved Sake. Sake tasting set ($15 NETT/set of 3) is also available. Request it from their friendly in-house Sake Sommelier to help you select your choice sake.

Ippin Cafe provides a wide variety of Sake ranging from the traditional Sake to the fruity and even the yogurt sake.

Some of the new selection available are the Yogurt Sake, Plain ($30 NETT), Yogurt Tochi Otome Strawberry ($31 NETT), Yutou Masamune ($51 NETT), Miracle Sake Junmai ($29 NETT), Mongai Sake ($19 NETT), Mongai Sake Cup ($16 NETT) and the Yoichi Densho Oensen Jinozo ($141 NETT).

I like the homely feel of the place and the homely food. My favourite concept of all is the food is available in convenience pack to take home. And all items sold at Ippin Cafe Bar is at nett price.

Ippin Cafe Bar, a artistic cosy cafe like bar offers great collection of sake. Sake that are suitable for ladies as well especially the yoghurt sake and yuzu sake! They also offer a menu of japanese dishes with ingredients from the Japanese SMEs. Best of all, they also sell the ingredients that they used in the menu too!

IPPIN Cafe Bar is a place located in Mohamed Sultan Road serving unpretentious real Japanese food that taste truly from home since October 2014. The business is run by Miss Ayumi Fujishiro, daughter of IPPIN's owner. At the first sight of this lady, I have totally no clue that she is a Japanese as she speaks perfect Singlish and in fact before that I have asked if she is a local.

Besides serving home cook meals, IPPIN also serves as a one stop shop with a section on the merchandise whereby people get to find goods directly imported from Japan like rice, noodle, tea, beverages as well as kitchen essentials. At a closer look on those items, I could not remember seeing them in Japanese marts like Isetan or even Mediya thus it marked all the differences.

Place was rather cozy and ambiance has given us a "feel at home" feeling. If you want to hook onto the cyber world, free WIFI service is available here.

Besides having merchandise and serving Japanese Food, IPPIN also catered a cooking corner for those who want to learn more about Japanese dishes.

Up the little steps to somewhere near the kitchen, you may get to see this little space artistically decorated by these art pieces from Children age 4 to 15. Interested in getting one of them or even creating one of them? They are actually located along the same road too in Mohamed Sultan.

Since IPPIN is more towards the classic home based food in Japan, you won't find typical Singapore Japanese Food chains here like, bento, sashimi, sushi or Katsu here. They kind of opened up a bigger picture to my dictionary of Japanese Food and saying this, they have a condiment rack with

Hiroshima is the number one landing of oysters in Japan and here we are, welcoming such big, thick and tasty oysters grilled in ponzu (yuzu vinegar) butter sauce achieving such refreshing taste. Besides being popular in size, these oysters were actually raised in clean ocean to attain such a clean taste. The set comes with rice (with barley), Hatcho miso soup, yummy Nikujaga pork and potato stew, salad and houjicha pudding (roasted green tea dessert), totally worth the value.

Grilled Oyster & Veggies in Ponzu Butter Sauce Set - $20

Love this side dish, it was a good comfort dish with tender sliced pork and the combination of potatoes with carrots gave a sweet starchy taste to the dish. Glass noodle was included and had well adsorbed the stew. It goes very well with a bowl of plain rice or even good enough to be served as a dish.

Another way of serving oysters was to have them deep fried! Likewise, these Oysters are originated from Hiroshima.Comes in 5 on a plate, these oysters were lightly battered and deep fried into its attractive crispiness. Apart from the way of serving the oysters, the sides in the set remains the same. On a good note, the egg mayonnaise and wasabi dip was very refreshing for the fried oyster, what I like about the dip was that you can actually get to see the ingredients of the dip like hard boil egg whites and cuts of cucumber.

Just take a closer look at the deep fried oysters, aren't they beautifully done up?

Deep Fried Oyster

Chicken pieces was plump and tender, well accentuated by the dashi (stock). Having Oyakudon for a Japanese meal is usually my favourite out of their rice dishes for it tasted so fragrant with its mild sweet stock with eggs and chicken.

Oyakudon Set - $15

Wettness level was abit high, nevertheless it was still a good tasty
bowl of Oyakudon. This set comes with miso soup, hojicha pudding too.

Fried Soba aka Yakisoba is unique and had caught hold of my appetite during dinner. No doubt it is any Japanese comfort food, it is seldom found in most Japanese restaurant and the secret to this dish is none other than their savoury sauce.Yellow onions, carrots, cabbages and meat were mixed in giving additional texture to the tasty noodles.

Yakisoba Set - $12

Having said this, this dish is remind Miss Ayumi Fujishiro , owner of the IPPIN's daughter, on her dad's home cooking, so feel at home! The set also comes with small dish (Kobachi).

Having tea after meal is good and its tea appreciation session. We had the chance to try out the most popular green tea, Sencha which has a perfect balance of refreshing aroma, delicate sweetness and mild bitterness. In order to have good tea served, server has to seized the right timing and temperature of water. GEnmaicha and Hojicha area also available.

Sencha - $6 per pot

For those who don't really take Sake, do try out this fruitty flavoured drinks and rest assured that you may get hook to them. In fact, this was the best recommended by one of the service staff. With 17% alcohol content and you can even taste the pulps among the drink. The taste was both sweet with a little sour just like the taste of Ichigo, strawberries in Japanese.

Besides having Strawberries Flavour, there is also Yuzu. It tasted both as great but my vote will goes to the former.

Yuzu - $34 per bottle

These peanuts are totally driving me nuts, coated and available in 3 flavours, serious coffee, creamy strawberry and grassy matcha. They are not only addictive but also something interesting to take note of.

On the right, the wobbly Hojicha pudding. The style did not fit me as I find that the Tea taste was a little too strong here which turned out to be bitter.

Overall, IPPIN did really stand up in terms of serving classic hearty Japanese home style food with competitive pricing. It is an absolute spot to hit if you want to enjoy something different from the usual Japanese fare.

Originating from Chiba Prefecture, Yakisoba is the Japanese staple that is doused with savoury sauce. It is an easy, straight-forward enjoyment, nothing fancy but still delicious. The Yakisoba set (SGD12) is the unassuming choice.
Yakisoba set comes with yakisoba, kobachi and matcha pudding.

Richly flavoured, the deep fried oyster set (SGD24) exudes a homely feel with the fragrance of the Nikujaga pork and potato stew wafting around the moment it is served. The oysters are also lightly battered to ensure a thin layer of crispiness on the outside and juicy oyster meat on the inside.
Deep fried oyster set comes with rice (with barley), 6pcs deep fried oysters, Hatcho miso soup, Nikujaga pork and potato stew, salad and matcha pudding.

The Oyakodon set (SGD15) features especially oishii chicken boiled with the dashi stock and egg on rice, which makes for a wonderfully comforting dish and generously proportioned too! I would imagine this is the one I would order when I am here.

The crowd-pleaser goes to the ginger pork with rice set (SGD15) which reflects how the syoga-yaki (fried ginger pork) is immensely popular in Japan too! This is the tried and tested successful formula that whets the appetite. The pork is thoroughly marinated with sweet soy and ginger, which is just perfect to re-create this homely dish, just better.
Ginger pork with rice set comes with rice (with barley), ginger pork, Hatcho miso soup, salad and matcha pudding.

One of their unique desserts is the hojicha pudding which is really lovely to have, smooth texture with a refreshing tea taste with a little malt feel. If you drop by Ippin, try this too.

If you like oysters, Ippin Cafe Bar has them too, goes beautifully with their hand-picked premium selection of sakes and beers - check out their collection!

The owners of Ippin Cafe Bar personally selected their favourites to bring it all the way from Japan's top prefectures to this little corner in Singapore - be sure to try their tsutsmi brewery plum wine kurahachi umeshu - 720ml (SGD29) which is particularly unique, which is lighter than normal wines, with a hint of sour plum that is quite addictive! It functions as an appetiser drink meant to stimulate appetite and promote digestion. Their range of craft beers are different from elsewhere too - Waku Waku Hyajumangoku Beer Koshihikari/ Pale/ Dark Ale (SGD9) and Waku Waku Granagri (SGD9).

They offer set meals like Oyakudon Set [$15] - Chicken and egg on rice (served slightly 'wetter'), hence those who prefer it dry, this may not be for you. The secret of oishii is dashi (stock), the chicken is boiled with dashi, that explains why it is so juciy! The set is served with Hatcho miso soup, salad and houjicha (roasted green tea) pudding. Definitely my go to for comfort food during rainy weather.

Deep Fried Oyster Set

For oysters lover, there is also a Deep Fried Oyster Set [$24]. These oysters are raised in clean ocean so be ready for a clean taste, yay to no more fishy taste! The oysters are lightly battered to golden brown, where it is crispy on the outside and still moist and tender on the inside. The set is served with rice (with barley), Hatcho miso soup, Nikujaga pork and potato stew, salad and houjicha (roasted green tea) pudding.

To go along with the meals, try the Marumo Mori Genmaicha The One tea (Genmaicha, Sencha, Houjicha). My favourite is Houjicha! Of cause, premium sake are also available.

IPPIN CAFE BAR is a place where you feel at home and they served classic Japanese home-style dishes. It is a place for unassuming lunch/dinner spot or a dress-down weekend date.

Other than serving the delicious food, they also sell premium Japanese snacks, cooking ingredients and drinks at affordable prices that are exclusively only available in IPPIN CAFE BAR. These merchandises travel all the way from Japan to Singapore.

Another thing I like about the IPPIN CAFE BAR is that the prices are inclusive of GST and Service Charge. The price you see is the price you pay.

Yakisoba is Japanese daily food, it tasted delicious and favourful. The favourful taste of the noodle lies in the secret of their savoury sauce. The noodles tasted tangy too.

Oyakudon Set ($15 Nett)
Chicken and egg on rice, an authentic Japanese dish. The chicken was soft and tender. The bowl was filled with dashi (stock), the rice then absorbed the dashi which gave the authentic taste. The broth was a little bit too much, as a result, the rice turned soggy.

Grilled Oyster & Veggies in Ponzu Butter Sauce Set ($20 Nett)
Oysters from Hiroshima. These oysters are raised in clean ocean so be ready for a clean taste. Grilled in special ponzu (yuzu vinegar) butter sauce, it gave a refreshing taste and strong flavour. I liked it very much.

Here is a hideout corner that I would love visiting again, the set meal is price reasonable and affordable.

Miso Udon Noodle with Oyster Set - $15 NETT

This dish is perfected using red miso from the natural production method by placing soybeans in a wooden barrel for two summers and two winters. It comes with kobachi (small dish) and a dessert.

The udon was springy, and I loved the thick red miso broth! The oysters were really fresh, as they are known to be sourced from the Hiroshima Prefecture which happens to be the most famous area of oysters in Japan!

Grilled Oyster and Veggies in Ponzu Butter Sauce Set - $20 NETT

The oysters were grilled in ponzu (yuzu vinegar) butter sauce which was a little citrus-like, but definitely a refreshing choice! Another dish from the set that caught my attention was the Nikujaga pork. It was stewed perfectly with potatoes and the pork was so tender! This set is also served with salad and miso soup.

Deep Fried Oyster Set - $24 NETT

Definitely a set I would order again!

The Oysters were unbelievably fresh, and you could taste its sweetness with every bite. It was lightly battered and served with light wasabi mayo which only got me wanting more. I loved this so much that I requested for a second helping! This set is also served with their Nikujaga Pork and Potato Stew, Salad, Hatcho Miso Soup and a Dessert.

Oyakudon Set - $15 NETT

When it comes to Japanese food, Oyaku Don (Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl) is no stranger to anyone. The chicken at IPPIN Cafe Bar is boiled with chicken stock that gives it an extra oomph. The huge slab of chicken on egg was drizzled with their signature sauce and was also served with salad and miso soup.

Yakisoba Set - $12 NETT

If you're craving for something simple and light, then this Yakisoba Set would be a fit for your taste buds! Their Yakisoba comes from Chiba Prefecture and so, is quality assured. The soba was tossed with their Japanese savory sauce and was served with koshiba (small dish) and dessert.

Oh and one thing to note is that the salad at IPPIN comes with NO dressing. You get to customize your own dressing or can even opt have it plain!

IPPIN Cafe Bar also serves a wide range of craft beers and sake! I'm not a huge fan of sake, so I decided to give their craft beers a try.

Koshihikari Ale - $9

Koshihikari is one of the most famous and delicious type of Japanese rice, and this beer gives off a light and smooth texture. (MY FAV)

Pale Ale - $9

Beer brewed from barley seeds that are home-grown which gives off a well-balanced bitter and smooth texture.

Dark Ale - $9

Has a rich flavor that resembles that of Guinness stout but is slightly lighter

We also got to try their Rattsu Nuts which retail at $8 per cup! They've it in Coffee, Matcha and Strawberry flavors and my favorites were the latter two!

Their Yuzu Jelly Dessert which got me requesting for seconds! It was really refreshing with a mild citrusy, yet sweet aftertaste!

Like what I've mentioned, IPPIN Cafe Bar is also a Japanese concept store which sells various items ranging from the ingredients used in their dishes. paper fibre clothing, premium Japanese snacks, condiments and many more!

Yakisoba Set ($12 Nett)
Yakisoba is a Japanese daily food. It's like our normal Chinese Fried Noodle which most of our mom will cook. The buckwheat noodle was flavored perfectly with their Ippin's savory sauce.
I love the combination of the cabbage and carrots in the Yakisoba. The crunchiness of the cabbage had enhanced the taste of the dish.

Oyakudon Set ($15 Nett)
Oyakudon is one of my favorite Japanese main course. The egg was silky and paired nicely with the tender chicken bite. Even though, I prefer rice with more sauce, I felt that they had too much dashi as the rice was literally soaking in them. It will be great if the dashi was just right.
For a Oyakudon Set at $15 Nett with Miso Soup and Hojicha Pudding, I will definitely be back for it.
The oysters which are served in Ippin Cafe Bar are from Hiroshima Prefecture where they are famous for their oysters in Japan. Rest assure on the quality of the oyster.
To be true, this is the first time I tried oyster. Previously, I always felt that oyster have a very strong fishy smell and slimy. This time round I kind of enjoy the both cooking method of oysters served by Ippin Cafe Bar.

Deep Fried Oyster Set ($24 Nett)

The oysters were lightly coated with bread crumbs batters making it crispy on the outside. I like the light wasabi egg mayo.
It does not have much of the wasabi taste, but the little pieces of egg white chunks had leveled the wasabi mayo. How I hope they sell the wasabi egg mayo.

Here the big juicy oyster which Ippin Cafe Bar served. The oysters are grilled in Pongzu (Yuzu vineger) butter. Along with the grilled vegetables, the oyster was indeed have a refreshing taste.
Both the oyster sets are served along with Hatcho Miso Soup, Nikujaga pork and potato stew, Salad and Houjicha Pudding.
To pair along with the oysters dishes that we are having, we had Sakae.

The Sakae was smooth and refreshing. According to the person in charge, the sakae will taste slightly different when you drink from the wooden cup.

What best to go with seafood other than Sakae is Beer. I tried their Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Beer Koshihikari Ale. The beer is make with Koshihikari, one of the most famous and delicious type of Japanese Rice.
The beer is very light and smooth. It had a slightly nutty and sweetness it in. Perfect for the hot and humid weather recently.
Overall, Ippin Cafe Bar is a great cafe bar to chill and relax while enjoying good Japanese food with your friends. Other than dinning, you are also able to have a little shopping spree at Ippin Cafe Bar. They offers various Japanese products and condiments.

Ippin Café and Bar is one of the eateries among the mini enclave mix of Japanese and
Chinese food spots, a little hidden from the main road behind UE Square. Set up by a Japanese father-daughter team, they do also devote a good section to selling imported
Japanese foodstuffs and drinks apart from the cafe menu. Think along the lines of Japanese sakes, different kinds of miso in tubs and dressing condiments. The daughter is the chef behind the food items. The place also offers free wifi.

The store has a shelf selling flavoured nuts called Rattsu. These were crunchy and pretty addictive. We liked the strawberry one best.

Their new oyster-themed menu feature set menu items, of which oysters imported from Hiroshima prefecture are the main stars. You can get oysters in a few variations: fried, grilled or with udon noodles. Prices on the menu are nett.

The Deep Fried oysters set ($24) contains succulent, juicy oysters encased within a thin soft
batter. The oysters still retained its juiciness despite it being deep fried. It was my favoured oyster variation among the sets.

Grilled Oyster & Veggies in Ponzu Butter Sauce Set ($20)

The grilled oysters and veggies in ponzu butter seemed a bit too dry
though. The ponzu butter barely seemed to make a presence apart from
imparting a slight tinge of sourness to the oysters.

Both sets include a nikujuga pork stew as a side. The comforting stew contains potatoes,
carrots and slices of thinly sliced pork shabu. It is tasty enough to stand on
its own as a dish.

Oyakudon

Ippin’s take on the classic dish of Oyakudon fares ok here. It came piping hot and was
a nice combination of chicken and egg on rice. The soup stock used was just
alright, but overall, it is good enough to satisfy any craving for a decent
Oyakudon.

Ippin also does have a good selection of sakes and beers, which are rather good judging from the few we tasted. The yuzu pudding we were served at the end was very refreshing and delightful in its wobbly consistency too.

Overall, the flavours presented here seem to be reminiscent of Japanese home cooked meals. The food items offered are more like the classic everyday fare of the Japanese than the restaurant bentos and dons we are more accustomed to from Japanese chains here. For those who drink, the drinks would be more of a draw.

Ippin Cafe Bar was set up in October 2014 by Miss Ayumi Fujishiro, with the mission to help out her father in setting up the Singapore outpost. As mentioned, Ippin is very focus on their 'classic Japanese home-style dishes'. Therefore don't expect your normal sushi, sashimi, katsu, and other restaurant fare. However, look forward to enjoy Oysters from Hiroshima Prefecture, Rice with Barley, Red Miso Udon and Oyakodon.

What I like about Japanese meal is that it always in a well balance set. For Grilled Oyster & Veggies in Ponzu Butter Sauce Set ($20 nett) and Deep Fried Oyster Set ($24 nett), it come with similar sides such as Hatcho Miso Soup; Nikujaga pork and potato stew; salad; rice with barley and dessert.

The Nikujaga pork and potato stew was simply delicious and definitely a good comfort dish during the winter months. The sliced pork is tender, while the combination of potatoes and carrots provide a more earthy flavour and starchy texture to the dish. The Japanese glass noodle inside soak up the gravy from the stew that the taste is well-balanced. While on the set menu, the stew is a side dish, I personally feel this dish can be sold on its own.

Rice with Barley

Salad for the night is a combination of cabbage, carrot, cucumber and cherry tomatoes. You actually need to add your own dressings. My personal pick is the one with wasabi flavour. It has the right balance of sweetness and tanginess, while the wasabi kick at the end was just addictive. This is coming from someone that does not dip his sashimi with wasabi. Of course the rice with barley is a notable mention. Although you notice the different in colour, I personally can't taste the difference between the rice and barley in this bowl. Well I just feel healthier after this meal.

Dressing Selections

Now to the main dish, the Grilled Oyster & Veggies in Ponzu Butter Sauce has nice tangy taste to it. Not overly creamy and rich, but I find the oysters shrink too much as might be over grilled. Instead of being the main star of the dish, the oysters become a garnish, making the dish not value for money.

Deep Fried Oyster, this is just delicious. The oyster look huge, plum, creamy and velvety is just a feast to the eyes and palate. The light batter helps to maintain the juiciness in the oyster. There is a mayo dip to accompany the fried oyster, but on its own the oyster is tasty enough. Although the oyster come frozen, you will not notice the frozen taste in this dish.

Miso Udon Noodle with Oyster Set ($15 nett). Using the red miso, the udon come in at thick broth. The texture of the udon is slightly overcooked, making it soggy instead of springy. The red miso was too overpowering for my liking. This dish come with the salad and dessert.

Oyakodon Set ($15 nett). My inaugural trip to Tokyo with LD landed us in Ueno, where we had the best Oyakodon in our life to date. So I was curious how does it taste in classic Japanese home-style dish and ask the host if we can have a try. The Oyakodon is tasty, the meat is tender and I noticed the use of robust dashi. The eggs were cooked to medium and still gooey. It is an 'Oishi' Oyakodon by Singapore standard.

We also sample their Yakisoba (Fried Noodle) Set ($12 nett). Served with side dish and dessert. It looks like Indian Mee Goreng without the chilli. Tasty but a little too mushy for my liking.

For desserts, we have yuzu jelly. It was quite refreshing with a hint of citrus tanginess. The Rattsu ($8 per cup), is a flavoured coated peanuts. Comes in strawberry, green tea and coffee. It is crunchy, not overly sweet and addictive. For my taste buds the strawberry is sweet, green tea is neutral while coffee is bitter. It is good with your drinks or even on its own.

While others enjoying their beer and sake, I have to content with my non-alcoholic drink. My meal are accompanied with refreshing yuzu drink (non-alcoholic) and a very good Hojicha ( roasted green tea).

The décor of Ippin Cafe Bar is very friendly and casual. Once you enter the shop, you can see their display for Japanese Products from beer, sake, tea, condiments, rice, snacks, accessories, clothing and lots of either items from Japan. The dining area are in the middle, with a few seating facing the windows and outdoor. It is very casual, homely and you'll be comfortable spending your leisure time here.

Overall, my favourite dishes at Ippin is the Deep Fried Oyster, Oyakodon followed by their Rattsu. It is a good place to meet up with your friends for drinks and enjoy the Japanese home-style food. Kanpai!! Cheers!!!

題外話/補充資料： This Cafe & Bar called itself Japanese Makan & Drinks Place. Set up by a Japanese Lady that speak perfect Singlish. Don't expect restaurant food, instead come and enjoy classic Japanese home-style dishes with imported beer, sake or Japanese green tea.

Instead, it brings about a more homely, cosy and down to earth ambiance in this corner of theirs. These nuts will really drive you nut! They are just too awesome to begin with! Rattsu comes in 3 flavors – Strawberry, Matcha and Coffee. It’s good to start off with the lighter flavor, Strawberry, and slowly increasing the intensity to the Coffee eventually.

Unlike most salads that are usually paired with dressing prior to serving, here at Ippin, you are given the free hand to choose your very own dressing and customize it to suit your own taste buds. Personally i like the Wasabi-Vinaigrette the most. I dont usually take wasabi, so i’m quite hesitant in trying it, but i glad i did! It’s quite refreshing, the wasabi taste was quite subtle, i would taste more of the sourish ponzu kind of flavor. It goes really well with the raw salad.

The staffs were really friendly and knowledgeable. They would always ask us if we like to order any kind of drinks to accompany our food, and when we are lost at what to order, they are there with their recommendations. We decided to go for something fruity, so they chose this Gran Agri Weizen Beer for us. The beer was not as fruity as i thought but was nonetheless creamy and smooth with a little wheat-y taste. I was told by one of the professional that it would taste more fruity if i were to pour out and drink from a glass.

Here comes the highlight of the night. First up was the Deep Fried Oyster Set ($24 nett). The set comes with rice mixed with barley, hatcho miso soup, Nikujaga pork & potato stew, salad and a dessert. It’s quite a sumptuous and worthwhile set! I’m totally in love with their fried oyster!! Lightly battered, so crispy on the outside and so fat and juicy on the inside! Also, the oysters were fresh and sweet. What more can i ask for! Another worth mentioning, was one of their side, Nikujaga pork & potato stew (close up and bigger version as shown below), which we all agreed it was good enough to standalone. The pork were thinly sliced and tender with potatoes and carrots cooked to perfection and have fully absorbed the essence of the stew. Also their atypical rice that was mixed with barley! A little light and chewy to the overall mouthfeel.

Next up was Grilled Oyster & Veggie in Ponzu Butter Sauce ($20 nett) that comes with the same sides and salad. The grilled oyster in ponzu butter sauce was quite refreshing with a little tangy sourish taste from the ponzu. But i find the oysters here a little more dry and less juicy compared to the fried oysters. & do you know, all their oysters are from Hiroshima Prefecture, the area that is famous for their oysters reared in clean ocean! I believe that’s how they can serve sweet and odour-less oysters right in their dishes!

Last but not least, to end off our meals, we are served with Yuzu Jelly as our dessert. A light yet refreshing taste from yuzu that cleanses your palate after a hearty meal. Texture of jelly was the soft and slimy type that can be easily slurp down your throat.

This complimntary packet of Sencha Green Tea is relatively more mellow compared to the usual matcha green tea i had. I like the lightness and fresh tasting of Sencha.

If you need a break from Japanese haute cuisine, then the down-to-earth Ippin Cafe Bar may be just the remedy you need.

Ambience at Ippin Cafe Bar is cozy and homely. Wooden shelves line the front, stacked high with Japanese snacks, cooking ingredients, condiments, beverages, and even paper fiber clothing! Wide, spacious wooden tables beckon, perfect for dining or simply relaxing. The limited amount of seating at Ippin Cafe Bar means it's difficult for the place to get crowded, great for those who want a quiet dinner. The cooking demonstration area is suitably zen, with minimalist decor, and the well stocked sake bar boasts some premium varieties!

Service at Ippin Cafe Bar is friendly, almost like dining in a Japanese friend's home. The hospitable staff act as hosts, able to engage you in conversation, and also able to offer recommendations and information on the food or beverages available. Items on the menu are even sold in-store, so you can prepare it at home! And if you don't know how to go about preparing it, then you can attend Ippin Cafe Bar cooking classes! They even offer free wifi. Overall excellent, friendly service, I like that the hosts checked on how our meal was going, if we needed any more drinks / food, and also requested for feedback!

Food at Ippin Cafe Bar is distinctly home style Japanese, which here means rustic presentations, hearty portions, and decent flavour. The actual food menu is rather small and limited, and all the items are sold in sets, costing between SGD $12 - $25 per set. I find myself wishing that the individual items could be sold ala-carte as well, especially if I wanted to order more of a particular item, instead of ordering the whole set again. Also, the seafood used here, especially their oysters, are frozen, imported from the Hiroshima prefecture, in the Chugoku region of Japan. Taste of dishes is generally decent, not terrible, but it's not restaurant quality either.

My first thought upon tasting the Nikujaga Pork & Potato Stew was, "Why is this only a side dish? It's good enough to be a main dish on its own!" If it could be served in a big portion, the Nikujaga Pork & Potato Stew, with its hearty chunks of potatoes and carrots, savoury strips of grilled yakiniku pork, and thin udon noodles, could be a satisfiying comfort dish on its own.

I loved the Deep Fried Oysters, and I wish it could be served as an appetizer instead of only being served in a set meal! The oysters are meaty, but due to the breading and frying, have a creamy consistency.

Overall, as a cafe, Ippin Cafe Bar serves uncomplicated, decent tasting food at really affordable prices. Not something I'll go out out my way for, but a nice change from the haute Japanese cuisine around the area. Plus, Ippin Cafe Bar has some really interesting and novel items in their shop, definitely worth a look.
