Food doesn't have to look good to taste good. This is particularly true of scissor-cut curry rice, which has to be one of the sloppiest looking dishes ever, but also happens to be one of my favourite foods. This dish has both Hainanese and colonial origins, as most cooks who worked for wealthy British families back in the early 1900s were Hainanese, and put an inventive twist on the pork cutlet by pummeling it flat, snipping it up over rice and coating it with curry.

My order the first time round comprised a fried pork cutlet blackened with gravy, a ngoh hiang (five spice pork roll), chup chye (stewed cabbage) and a fried egg. They're cut into bite-sized pieces with a pair of metal scissors, following which gravy from the lor bak (stewed pork) and then curry is ladled over, which renders the individual components of the dish quite unidentifiable.

The layering of the lor bak gravy and curry create a hybrid gravy that's... magic. It's only slightly spicy and possesses a starchy texture, which works as its meant to be drizzled over plain rice. It was the gravy which elevated the individual ingredients from okay to amazing. Honestly I found the ngoh hiang soggy and the blackened pork cutlet to be on the wrong side of salty. Also tried a bit of the lor bak and found it too tough. A fried egg isn't too hard to do, but the chup chye was great. Soft, sweet and distinctly shrimpy. Nothing goes better with curry than perfectly stewed chup chye.

I returned a couple weeks ago and we ordered dishes to share. The only new dish I had was the chicken chop, which was freaking awesome. The sesame seeds it was coated with made it super fragrant and it was snipped into itty bits which made it so moreish with the curry. I declare my second visit a complete win.

In short, stick with the fried egg, chup chye and chicken chop.

Had it tabaoed for dinner yesterday, leaves me yearning for more! As im someone that doesnt really like fried chicken wing so i went for their chicken cutlet, deep fried prawn, egg and of cuz their chap chye. Accompanied by the 3 usual sauce, yea only 1 word umami!

Egg was normal, chicken cutlet was up to standard and my fav would be the deep fried prawn. Its my first time trying their prawn but i guess i really do like their prawn batter better than any other prawns ive tasted before. Its like the chinese style for prawn tempura,
our way of eating it soggy with the curry and all the other sauce on it. Would recommend to do take away as the rice would be submerge with all the goodness of the dish!

. The egg was good too, dosed in the sweet black sauce! And of course, the famous curry doused rice! The sticky curry sauce was so good over the rice with the black sauce, i had two plates!!! A must try authentic Hainanese food heaven

Do be careful of summon officers too! One poor uncle just came by stopped at traffic light, tabao and got snapped by Cisco immediately within a minute!

You can order meat and vegetable items to be piled on your plate of steamed rice or you can have the items as side dishes served in portions according to the number of people sharing them. I'm not a big fan of cabbage but the braised cabbage here is soft, juicy and melts in your mouth. Definitely order the sunny side up eggs drenched in dark soy sauce and spread the runny yolk over your rice.

It's almost a must to have your rice drenched in curry for that extra kick but if your tongue can't handle the spice, opt for a savoury soy sauce gravy instead. Share a seat if you find all the tables occupied and be prepared to perspire as the curry spices ignites a flame party in your mouth.

This is probably the best thing on earth! The braised pork (lor bak) meat is oh-so-heavenly which you can’t miss. The pork slices are soaked in the shimmering braised sauce from the oil of the fatty meat. I can feel that the pork slices were braised long enough that I can sink my teeth right through the delicious meat. What are you waiting for? It is screaming to you right now that it wants to be in your stomach.

The prawn fritters (ngoh hiang) was served to me cold and soggy. It was too oily for my liking too. This is very common when deep fried food is left in the cold for too long. Perhaps placing it under heated spotlights will help to keep it warm to prevent this sad fade of a wonderful delicacy. I do find the water chestnuts in it pretty interesting though.

Put them all together and you will have a hearty meal of the traditional Hainanese Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice. I can’t remember the prices of the food but it’s about $11+ for 2 person with all these dishes and 2 plates of curry rice. This place is definitely worth checking it out if you’re looking for really good and traditional scissor-cut curry rice.

Looks like a perfect supper place to fill your hungry tummy with curry rice and delish side dishes!

PS: Oh, do also try their pork cutlet as it was sold out when I went there!

See more food reviews at http://thehungrybunnie.blogspot.comEverything looks a gooey mess but trust me, it's lip-smackingly delicious. And ridiculously cheap. Our entire meal, including a large bowl of soup, cost only 16 bucks. Must-Trys: curry chicken, stewed cabbage, braised pork belly and sweet corn with carrot and tomato soup. Also, this must be eaten piping hot. The gravies become a goopy, super starchy mess once it turns tepid.

It is a simple, no frills coffee shop that takes you back to the 1980s and is an easy 10 minutes walk from farrer park MRT station.

The curry is thick and flavourful and is poured over your rice together with a sweet gravy. I know it sounds a little odd, and honestly, it isn't a very pretty sight, but the taste is great and I could have finished the plate of rice with just the curry and gravy alone. We had a few dishes to go with our rice and were introduced to the few popular dishes such as the pork cutlet and the stewed cabbage. I wouldn't say that they were fantastic on their own but they complimented the curry and rice well.

Overall, the food in general is pretty good and value for money. The service tends to be quite fast as well, so you wouldn't be left waiting for very long despite the seemingly long queue.

After trying many several stalls selling scissor cut curry rice, i must say none of them came close. Went with 2 other colleagues for lunch, so we ordered ala carte dishes by small plates to share. Both of them were impressed with the messiness of the dishes and rice yet with totally impressive and appetizing taste for economical rice. Our favorites were the curry chicken and the dry pork chop.

Note to fellow diners: this is roadside coffeeshop style with simple settings so dun expect detailed cleanliness. You order the food at the stall first, then proceed to pay at the counter opposite the serving area and collect your own utensils. i washed my utensils twice
. They have a tab within the dining area itself for a quick hand wash if needed. Do plan for around $7 per head for sharing of the dishes i mentioned above.

Their deep fried prawn fritters is also one of my must buy items as the outer layer is very crunchy and the fluffyness in it is also smooth and blend in well with the fresh prawns as well. Deep with the chilli sauce will make it even taste better as well.

Usually is quite crowded here during meals' hours, so do be there early to avoid long wait for seats.

I love the curry chicken wings they serve here as it is cooked till the meat just simply falls off the bones when you bite into it. No effort is required at all.

The hainanese fried pork chop is a little dry, but I guess it adds texture admidst the gloopiness of the sauces. Depending on my mood.

I really like the traditional hainanese cabbage here as well. It's well cooked, and just slightly crunchy. It goes very well with the rice and sauces.

The overall cleanliness of the place is not that great, but it's definitely an authentic experience sitting there, eating your snotty looking mess of a meal. What I can say is this - it definitely tastes better than it looks! And being open late for supper, it's a hearty post-party food!

My first impression of the stall is that they sell very different dishes from other curry rice stalls. And so, I ordered some ngoh hiang, braised pork chop, cabbage and egg for about $4. The presentation is as bad as it can get, but I'm not deterred by any awful looking food as long as it taste good.

After the meal, I felt that the taste doesn't suit me. The curry and the combination of red and black gravy isn't my cup of tea. For the record, I do love curry rice a lot. Other than the ngoh hiang which is quite good, the rest I don't like. Some people might like this, but not me. And I won't be going back again.

Delightfully drenched with irresistable curry gravy, a plate of Beach Road curry rice served with curry chicken, fried cabbage and fried egg, costs only $3. The distinguishing factor of this curry rice is its special curry gravy which is exceptionally rich and flavorful with just the right sweetness, spiciness, thickness and consistency. Even though the serving was reasonably large, I found myself finishing it mouthful after mouthful and had to resist the temptation of ordering another plate.

This plate of rice looked real messy and unattractive but believe me. It is a real gem. Their stewed cabbage, pork chop/ chicken chop are one of the best along with braised pork. All these are selling at economical price. Also, i guess the name came directly from the dish itself as they will use a scissors and cut up all the food. Then, the entire plate will be drenched in curry and black sauce. TRY IT with no regrets!
