When we sat down, the staff asked there was many people and planned the menu for us. With about 6 to 7 persons, she recommended us having a plate of the signature dish which was the Yong Tau Fou, as well as, a plate of assorted roasted meat. With the 7 of us ordering drinks such as homemade barley and tea, the total bill came up to $58.70. By the way there was no breakdown.

The signature Yong Tau Foo consisted of fried bean curd stick, fried wanton, fried quail egg, fish ball, tau kwa, tau pok, tofu, brinjal, lady’s finger, bitter gourd on top of boiled kangkong, topped with their secret gravy. I like the crispy crackling fried bean curd stick, which was not too hard. We had the dish with chicken flavoured rice. The gravy went very well with the rice. I wish that the fish paste stuffing in the yong tau fou could be more as I could barely taste it.

For the assorted roasted meat, we selected Roasted Duck and Roasted Pork as one of us did not take Roasted Chicken. The meat was not bad.

Overall the food was not and was served fast despite the place was packed during Sunday lunch time. Wish that we were given time to think of what to have instead of being pressured to order.

Adding two bowl of plain rice to settle our lunch, it consisted of veggies, fritters, fishballs, prawns and tofu. I like their fried stuffs with crispy cracking bite, giving 100% satisfaction while I ate along with dipping gooey gravy. Kangkung was playing part to balance up the meat.

The cost of the claypot herbal mutton soup is $4.80 which is quite expensive considering the amount of lamb given which was quite little. The taste of the soup was not rich enough as compared to the original stall at beauty world.

Their ordering system was slightly strange, you just need to tell the cashier for how many diners, she will take care of the amount of items needed. You can tell the staff which items you do not want, there was not any utensils for self choosing of items.

This Ampang Yong Tau Foo had very special brown gravy. It was starchy and many half fried onions, there was no meat in the gravy. It tasted sweet, salty and savory.

The Yong Tau Foo items consisted of kang kong, fried quail eggs, fried tofu, steamed tofu, fishballs and many many fried beancurd skin.

I especially liked the fried beancurd skin, very cripsy and fluffy like eating crackers. It was very delicious when dipped whole fried beancurd skin into the special gravy sauce.

Four hungry monkeys decided to head for a sunday food hunt down old upper thomson road.

"That yong tau food place...

You mean like the ones we eat every week from Marina Square?

No no. This comes with gravy.

Like the ones at Suntec?

Mmmhmm.

Oh i'm so hungry I could die. I hope we get a parking space soon."

That's our conversation in the car. And we could not have gotten to this place any sooner. As luck would have it, it wasn't long before we got our parking space.

And that was mad heat we had to brave to get to the stall. Which was just less than 50m away from the car.

"Yong tau foo? Yes, yong tau foo. Dumpling soup? Yes.

Chicken? Yup. White chicken. Just the breast please."

Now we sit and wait. 5 minutes. Tops.

And this appeared.

Of course, it was the only photo I was allowed to take before we doubled over in hunger. I make it sound like we just left a concentration camp. When it was really just Sunday rowing trainings.

Guess how much all that cost? Ytf, rice, chicken breast, dumpling soup and one barley drink.

$35.

That was some satisfying lunch.

We cleared it all in half an hour. Or less.

It's been a while since I've been here and I still loved the brinjal and bouncy fishballs. Most of all? I love that starchy gravy.

It's not superbly cheap but this was the best value we got for our buck this month out from the usual foodcourts in Marina and Suntec.

within the same coffeeshop, there is also a chicken rice stall. i was pleasantly surprised this day when i chose to packet $4 worth of the ampang ytf and a packet of roast chicken rice. From my picture attached, i'm sure one would agree with me the quantity of chicken given is super generous. Although its a little dry and the rice is averagely fragrant, you can never eny that for a mere $3, you probably can't find an amount offered for any other chicken rice stall. Maybe uncle tio 4D last night

Nothing beats the Yong Tau Foo at Ngee Foo. I have been a regular customer since i first tried them about 13 yrs back. The yong tau foo was very fresh and the gravy was heavenly! It's slightly starchy and thick, and tasted of roasted garlic and yellow bean. Hard to describe but I really liked the gravy. I also had some standard ingredients such as fishballs, pork dumplings, beancurd skin and so on, and all the ingredients were very nice. To sum up, I believe this is one of the best yong tau foo

The Fried Tofu dish is the dish to order in here. It is really very different from the sort of yong tau foo that I usually eat. It is crispy and the aroma of the fried beancurd skin just permeates around. The skin would be too salty for most people, but that is alleviated by the vegetables. They should put more vegetables to balance the taste a little. While I did not really enjoy the fried tofu due to my considerations on fried food being unhealthy, the sauce really enticed me for a second bowl of rice. I can eat bowls of rice with that sauce everyday!

In general, the wanton was also very salty for me, especially the 'soup'! Not sure if you are supposed to drink the soup, but it's definitely too salty for me to drink it like this. It almost tasted bitter from the overdosage of pure salt in the soup. The wanton itself soaked up the salty soup but they turned out just right.

This place is quite an interesting find - I would never gotten to this place on my own because of how deeply secluded it is. It could be quite an acquired taste sort of place for people who are not used to this sort of dishes. After all some people do love it so much and don't find it salty at all! Well, to each of his own.

The shop behind in green signboard also reads Ampang Yong Tau Fu, a direct competitor with this 928 Ngee Fou Ampang Yong Tau Foo. Not sure which is better, but I took a peek at the competitor's presentation of dishes which looked neater in my opinion. Taste-wise, it could go either way! Wait till I try that too.

It's worth coming back as it's pretty traditional style. However, the cripsy beancurd was overfried hence there is a bitter taste. The vegetable was good enough to fill my heart however there were only 3 fishballs probably it's because they did not have enough fishballs. Egg plant was really huge. Overall, it cost about $45 for 5 pax with drinks and rice.

The gravy was not too heavy or sticky, neither watery, just the right texture and flavour. It blended very well with Yong Tau Foo and all the ingredients were very fresh and nice

The Service
Waiting time still acceptable as the food is served quite fast as I noticed they only need to blanched the Kang Kong since the rest of the ingredients are pre-cooked.

The Ambience
Although the stall is in a coffeeshop, i find that the place was well-ventilated and not stuffy hence still acceptable

The Price
Reasonably priced at $4 per person.

Overall
I will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this!

This is one of the best yong tau foos I have ever eaten! I have been here for quite a few times. The quality of the yong tau foo is consistent with time. The gravy goes really well with the ingredients. It is worth a try and worth the wait! Parking can be a problem if you are travelling by car though. Service was quite fast even though there were quite a number of people.

Ngee Fou Ampang Yong Tau Foo, is admittedly quite ulu-fied, so it's best to drive there, or walk, if you live/work around the area. The best way to describe its location is near Nee Soon Camp (NS men will know this) and in the predominantly landed property Springleaf estate. Although Ngee Fou is purportedly open till 7.30pm, the food runs out by late lunch. Besides, the food is made fresh everyday so you'll do well to eat early in the afternoon when it's at its freshest. Also, because parking is so limited, it's best to hit this just before the peak lunch hour.

Apart from yong tau foo, there's chicken rice, duck rice and curry fish head that's worth a try here. Just take a look at the other tables, and you'll see almost everyone ordering the same stuff as well. Diversification is probably the reason for their continued success and repeat customers. I haven't been here since the early 2000's, but the food still really good. Short of driving up to Ampang in Petaling Jaya, Ngee Fou is the next best most readily accessible thing.

We had:

1) Chicken ($13.50 for a 3-person portion) - juicy and succulent, with minimal soy marinade so the flavour of the chicken really shines through. This was pretty good

2) Nonya-style Curry Fish Head ($20 for small): rich and creamy, spicy enough and brimming with lots of ingredients, lady's fingers, eggplant, tomatoes and fried beancurd. The fish is fresh and flaky, no fishy muddy tones here. One thing that we noted as well, the onions were very well done, they were soft, caramelized and sweet. We loved nibbling on them

3) Ampang Yong Tau Foo ($12.50): freshly made yong tau foo that's served "dry" (as opposed to the soupy style) with a brown braising gravy slathered over it. That brown gravy is what makes yong tau foo an "Ampang" yong tau foo. It's a muted, mellow, starchy and gooey gravy with roasted garlic and yellow bean undertones. The standard ingredients are bouncy fishballs, fried pork dumplings, fried beancurd skins, sliced fishcake-filled bittergourds, cubed silken beancurd, poached kangkong and fried beancurd

I find that the fish meat they used to fill the vegetables is a little to soft and marshy. In addition, the meat too little too. However, I must applaud the sauce. It's delicious and generous. Abit too much I should say, so much so that my entire dish turns soggy. This tau kee is really salty!! It has to go with rice or else you will end up drinking alot of water to wash away the saltiness. Definitely not something I would eat on its own.
