I was recently introduced to Lau Wang Claypot through Openrice’s food tasting session and I was surprised to find that this food stall has a history of close to 30 years of producing yummy clay pot dishes! The store has been taken over by a young towkay with the traditional receipes all passed down to him. In order to make sure that he is keeping up with times, he has made very slight changes to the receipes to cater the the ever changing consumer preference and yet keep to the traditional taste.

Located in Serangoon, it is a 5-10 minutes walk from the MRT station and it is hidden away from the main road, making this place hardly noticeable. However this is a place which I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good pot of Claypot Sesame Chicken. My favourite stall had closed down quite a while back and I finally found a replacement for it!

A chilli lover myself, this one hits the spot! Not to spicy to numb your tastebuds, yet enough to let you savor the heat on your tongue as you drench your bowl of rice with the sauce!

I can’t decide which one I like better, the spicy or the non spicy version, but I am sure that on days where I am craving for a simple savory dish, this will definitely be on my food list.

This isn’t my favourite as the soup isn’t as “herbal-ly” as I would have like it to be, There is definitely ample amount of herbs throw into the mix to make the soup, however as each clay pot is made fresh on the spot, there isn’t enough time for the herbs to infuse its full flavor into the soup, leaving a pretty weak herbal taste.

I am never a fan ofliver and kidney, however those who tried the dish have commented that it is overall a pretty yummy dish, however the pig’s kidney didn’t seem to have been properly handled as there was quite a smell to it. Such a pity.

Soft and flavoursome, this is a dish which I would recommend as well! Well cooked freshly sliced fish, with slightly spicy sauce base, I found myself reaching out for this dish several times during the meal. Definitely worth a try.

With a generous amount of seafood thrown into the mix, like squid and prawns, this will be one which seafood lovers would go for. The price is definitely reasonable for such a generous serving.

The Kangkong is definitely well cooked, where it was presented to us crunchy, instead of limped from overcooking! I definitely appreciate the effort placed into dish.

VERDICT
With their well cooked dishes, generous portions and fresh ingredients, it is definitely worthwhile to make a trip down to Lau Wang Claypot Delights.
My one complaint about all the dishes is that they come off pretty oily. The owner apologise to all of us that day and told us that he will definitely look into reducing the amount of oil used in the cooking. I am pretty sure that a friendly reminder for a lesser oil when placing your order will be taken note of.
The location can be a little troublesome to find. However with google maps, I am sure you will have no problems getting there since it is near to an MRT station.

Lau Wang Claypot Delights has had over 2 decades of history since its establishment in 1985, and till today, it is still serving up excellent sauce claypot dishes. Cooked to order, each claypot served at Lau Wang Claypot Delights is fragrant, tasty, and packed with a generous amount of sauce for dousing your bowl of rice with.
Despite Lau Wang Claypot Delights being located in a coffeshop, the place is clean, well ventilated, and spacious enough for diners. As the only tenent, Lau Wang Claypot Delights keeps the place clean and well maintained. Furniture is comfortable enough, though high ambient temperatures or heavy rains will affect their ambience.
Lau Wang Claypot Delights is family run, and orders are served relatively quickly, even though each dish is prepared to order. The owner formulates his own secret receipe for each sauce, and the prices per dish are cheap and value for money.
Lau Wang Claypot Delights has several signature dishes, and the most highly recommended is their sesame oil chicken. But what I find odd is their naming convention, as 'Kung Pao Chicken' here simply means 'Sesame Oil Chicken with Dried Chili', not the typical Chinese style dish you're familiar with.

The most popular dish is their Sesame Oil Chicken (SGD $4.50) and with good reason. The sauce is fragrant and extremely flavourful, with moist chunks of boneless chicken. The meat is marinated overnight in Chee Seng 100% Pure White Sesame Oil, a premium quality sesame oil which totally infuses the meat with flavour. Ask for the chili version 'Kung Pao Chicken', for that spicy kick!

The Sambal Seafood (SGD $6.50) is a medley of fresh seafood, including fish, prawns, squid rings, crabstick, and an assortment of vegetables like onions, okra / ladies fingers, and button mushrooms in a savoury and slightly spicy sambal sauce. I like that the fish slices and squid rings are thickly cut and very fresh, and the sambal is hearty and spicy but not overpowering. My only complaint is that the sambal sauce is quite oily.

Sesame Chicken in claypot. According to the Boss, the chicken is marinated with sesame oil over night so that the chicken gives a very fragrant sesame smell and taste when is cooked. My personal feel is the dish is slightly too oily despite sesame oil is much healthier than normal cooking oil. A little taste of Shao Xing Wine (chinese cooking wine) will definitely enhance the taste! if those glutinous rice wine will be better!

Herbal Frog leg soup. i would say that this is the least favourite for me but Husiban's favourite. I feel the herbs is too bland and couldnt cover the "frog fishy" smell and taste. The soup gives a very fishy after taste. But Husiban feel otherwise, he loves the lingering feel after drinking effect.

Sambal seafood. The seafood is marinated before cooking it. Personally i feel the sotong is overcooked as it has been in the claypot for very long. the fish is quite fresh though. Husiban quite like the dish and took extra servings of it.

I simply love this dish though it tastes different from the Dong Bao Ji. To me, its a pass as the meat is tender. The chilli is a bit hot for those who can't take it.

This dish needs a bit of improvement as the liver still has a bit of porky aftertaste.
Personally, I am not a lover of Liver.

a) Sliced Fish w Bittergourd ($ 4.50)
b) Frog Leg Herbal Soup ($ 15.00)
c) Sesame Chicken Spicy ($ 4.50)
d) Sambal Seafood ($ 7.00)
e) Liver & Kidney ($ 4.50)

Its affordable and the portion of Claypot Food is sufficient for a group of 8 people.
Recommended for those who love Claypot.

Both businesses are by Mark who looks quite young for a boss. Its recipes can trace back its origins from a outlet in Johore Bahru 20 years ago. 10 years ago the outlet expands its business to Singapore with an outlet in Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, followed by another in Bishan Block 504. Currently besides this outlet, there is also another outlet in Yishun under the Lau Wang Claypot Delights' branding. Both are opened about a year ago. Through trials and errors, Mark has refined the recipes to bring out the flavours in simple home cooked food.

Frog Leg Herbal Soup ($8.00/ 1 frog)
For 2 frogs, the soup will costs $15. The soup tastes of a strong herbal taste. Personally I would prefer additonal of cooking wine to kill the frog's fishy taste. There seem to have a aftertaste on the meat. There is a lot of chinese herbs used in this dish.

Claypot Dried Chilli Chicken ($4.50/ small)
It is also available in non spicy version which is Claypot Sesame Oil Chicken and costs $6.50 for big size. I am quite surprised when this is served. I am expecting something that is quite dry as the kind ususally served in Zhi Char stalls or the type served with little but very thick sauce. The amount of sauce in this dish is quite a lot. And the spicyness of the dish come from fresh chillies, instead of dried chillies. The chicken is soaked in sesame oil overnight before been used for cooking. Quite tender and tasty.

Claypot Dried Chilli Liver & Kidney ($4.50)
Similar to the above Chicken dish, this also available in non spicy version and costs $6.50 for big size. Compare to the above 2 dishes, this still have much more to improve on. As it is served in hot claypot, the liver and kidney get overcook easily. The bigger pieces of kidney also have a rather strong porky aftertaste.

Seldom do I see a dish of Kang Kong with minced meat. As there is quite an amount of sauce and minced meat in this dish, I feel that it will do very well with a bowl of pain rice. If there is more chopped garlic in it, I feel it tastes even better.

Overall I like the fact that dishes are served in pipping hot claypots, but there seems to have a lacking of vegetable dishes for a well balanced meal. Thank to OpenRice for inviting me to this food tasting session which I have enjoyed very much and have time to catch up with fellow OpenRicers. I look forwards to try the other non spicy claypot dishes the next time I come.

The aunty presented us the menu which offers a range of claypot dishes such as Sesame Oil/Dried Chilli Chicken, Frog Leg/Chicken/Fish Herbal Soup, Ginger and Spring Onion Kidney Liver, Dried Chilli Sliced Fish, Gong Bao Frog Legs, Spicy Prawns etc.
You can choose the claypot size and we got a large Claypot Sesame Oil Chicken ($6.50), a large Claypot Frog Leg Herbal Soup ($15) and a small Claypot Minced Meat with Eggplant ($4.50). The aunty actually recommended us to try the Claypot Spicy Sambal Seafood which is not in the main menu but we didn't order it in the end as one of us couldn't take chilli and another needed to eat soft food due to wisdom tooth extraction
Anyway, out of the three claypot dishes, the sesame oil chicken is my favourite! I like the gooey thick sauce enveloping around the tender chicken meat! As for the herbal frog leg soup, I like that the meat is very soft! However, after subsequent mouthfuls, I find that it tasted rather bland. I think the Gong Bao Frog Legs would be tastier! One of my favourite veggies is Eggplant and I was happy we ordered that. The soft mushy eggplant when mixed together with minced meat and soaked in the gluey sauce is absolutely delicious!
