went with sis & b-i-l to two chefs @ commonwealth crescent for a quick lunch today on 18.11.2015. :-)
my last post on two chefs was 2 years ago, no change in opinion..haha!it was 11.35am. they were open, no customer yet. we were the first. :-)we ordered a see hum (cockles).
cockles were tiny! & the serving very small for S$7. inflation la..usd going up? whatever…
for me the best dish was this S$5.50 san lo hor fun.
really flavourful, the real meaning of wok hae, good serving of sliced snakehead too. ^^
the S$15 black bean sauce 松鱼头 was good.
fish head was fresh. sauce was good. but fish head was so very tiny leh…super tiny…eh…never see before..haha!
but really no comparison with 香港街珍记 – Hong Kong Street Chun Kee, just 1 level up at the market next door
the sauce at chun kee has a nice tangy lime taste, & it’s like 2x the size.
& even the zi char stall hong man ji delights 鴻满记小吃 at mei ling market & food centre sells a good S$13 hk steamed song fish head 港蒸松鱼头.
lunch came to S$27.50. not ex but then servings really tiny. so for me only the san lo hor fun consider good (but then it was not always consistent!). the song fish head & cockles were just ok only…
& lastly, the old lady server had a poor service attitude. haughty, unfriendly, told us curtly there was no sliced fish beehoon soup here, the S$5.50 hor fun was very small, & looked very fed-up when we didn't order a larger portion.
& interestingly, the young fella who took the bill was quite courteous, maybe he's the boss..
i think no chance i will come here again for the song fish head la when hk street chun kee is one step away.

You cannot miss out on the Golden Mushroom Beancurd when you are here! This thick, flavourful savoury dish is easily one of the yummiest to be polished clean from the bowl. The beancurd used in this dish seemingly tastes like egg tofus and the enoki mushrooms were also cooked to a soft texture yet not completely yielding. Recommended dish!

These fried Prawn Rolls will be the favourite of those who have momentarily forgotten about what's healthy! Beneath its crispy exterior lies soft fragrant prawn fillings that was paired with the heavenly roasted duck with honey sauce on the side. Yummy. I secretly liked this a lot for the sauce.

The Vegetables with egg, salted egg and century egg was the favourite of the table, but I wasn't too much of a fan of vegetables. Yet I found it quite delicious especially with the addition of the swirling cloudy egg mixture that made the dish particularly sweet. Recommended (for the vegetables lovers).

Next up was the Horfun - which we ordered as a carbohydrate replacement for rice. I loved it because there was so much wokhei taste and so fragrant! The horfun was also slippery smooth and coated with delectable sauce, and was gone in sixty seconds. Recommended (for those with black holes for stomachs).

Another of those must-try dishes as mentioned across various food platforms: Buttered Ribs was a medley of condensed milk powder sprinkled onto juicy sweet ribs. While it seemed pretty strange, it surprisingly actually goes well together with rice. Somehow I think that the ribs could have been fried better - they could have reused the oil a little bit too many times due to the need to handle the crowd. Wonderful dish idea, but execution could have been better.

You are advised to reach before 6.30pm or risk having to wait for about 15 minutes (or more) for a seat. It is also more advantageous to come as a bigger group of 6 or more so that you will be issued a seat faster. Altogether, it is a worthy and classic tze char experience here - complete with all the sweat, noise and Night Market Life playing on TV.

Located next to commonwealth Food Centre and in the middle of the Commonwealth Neighbourhood Estate, it seems like their die hard fans will just join the queue no matter how long it is even during on a Friday evening. The sitting place was somehow a little unusual to me as we are dying at low lying area where the level of my table was equivalent to the level of the road. It was rare to dine in such environment anymore I thought. There were ample of parking lots, thus drivers need not have to worry.

As my visit falls within the Chinese New Year Season, the given menu was rather compact with few items under each categories and we had the menu turned over, it shows the set meal for large table dining.

We were told to place the order before getting our table. We were at an advantage as we were only dining as a pair and smaller tables were readily available.

The dishes came pretty fast in consistent mode. The first that came to our table was the sliced fish with ginger and spring onion.

It's kind of disappointing when we received the dried scallop bean-curd dish. Shreds of scallops can be found in the sauce but was given sparingly. The Toufu was nothing unusual but more towards those prepacked ones from the supermarkets. To make things worse, the green peas that were given tasted extremely raw as though it was uncooked. Though crunchy but it filled the mouth packed full of raw greens taste.

Nothing beats this old school plate of braised Yee Mee. It was flavourful especially with the rich black gravy that coated each strands of the Yee Mee with consistency. If you like KL Hokkien Mee, the taste was pretty close to one. I bet this plate of noodles will beat any neighbourhood Zi Char Stall hands down.

The visit of Two Chefs is never complete without having their Butter Ribs. These sweet fried pork ribs were all covered with milk powder dusts and such concoction had complimented the dish quite well. It's unique and a definite must try.

I felt that Two Chefs Eating place is over-hyped. Their dishes were pretty average except the Butter Ribs that had given me the Wow Factor. But on the contrary, they are doing well by the look of the snaky queues line up at the 2nd image. Perhaps their style doesn't seems to fit my bill.

1) fried prawn served with mayonnaise $24
This was recommended by the server. The strong taste of the lemon and mayonnaise masked the taste of the prawn so I couldn't really taste it. I suppose kids will love this.

2) golden mushroom beancurd $12
The gravy was really very flavourful and savoury. The beancurd was smooth and there was plenty of golden mushroom which easily absorbed the gravy.

3) fried yam (not stated in menu so i'm unsure of the price)
This was quite a special dish. Even though the yam was fried (exterior was slightly crispy), it still manage to maintain moisture and softness inside. Makes a great snack and it was flavourful too.

4) honey fried chicken $14
This was slightly salty, nothing special. The chicken tasted like pork ribs though.

Overall, it is not a must-go zichar but you can try it to understand all the hype if you're around the vicinity.

You will see this signature dish popping up on different tables as an appertiser before the meal. Served cold and lightly cooked, this is a dish which people are usually aware off due to its half raw nature. However, dont shy away from it cause it is SO FREAKING YUMMY that you see a non-cockle eating me happily slurping the flesh of the shells!

Tangy sour and crazy fragrant from the ginger, chilli and spring onions, it is no wonder a signature dish at this eating place.

It was a soup which we almost didn’t order. Lucky we did cause it was so flavoursome! The chicken was so tender soft that the meat can easily break apart when I was scooping the soup. With a strong herbal after-taste, you will savor each bowl with especially during this rainy season.

My dad, king of sensitive tastebuds love the beehoon even though I found it tasteless. He claim it has the “wor hei” burnt wok smell which makes it extra fragrant. I dont really fancy this dish, but they are definitely not stingy with the ingredients!

BUTTER PORK RIBS

The picture which I had of the dish was so blur but so yummy that I just have to mention about it! Soft slices of spare ribs are coated with sweet milk powder, I bet the little kids at the table will be sure to love this dish!

SGD 10

VERDICT

Definitely a great place to head to for family dinner with affordable offerings and great dishes. You would want to be there before 7pm where the dinner crowds starts to form a queue. The queue usually clears quite fast and the moment your butt is planted on your seat, the dishes will materialize in front you of you within 15 minutes!

Hi guys, recently I was invited by Openrice to attend a food tasting session with other bloggers at Two Chefs Eating Place (Zi Char) also famously known for their signature dish, Buttered Ribs covered with milk powder...Sounds really good right? Some of you guys living at the West side might heard of the zi char restaurahttp://static4.sg.orstatic.com/UserPhoto/photopending/0/M2/004CW185FBE62F77F919B5c.jpgnt before. I live in the east side so I don't really know the places around here as well! But my friends visited this place before and they all said that the food is good and the prices were also at an affordable range.

Two Chefs Eating Place

Blk 116 Commonwealth Crescent (located near Commonwealth MRT Exit B)
#01-129,
Singapore 140116
Telephone Number: 6472 5361

This is how the place looks like! Zi char, coffee shop style!

Just look at the crowd! Looks like the business must be really good here. It is usually crowded and packed in the evening so be sure to make a reservation before you come!

Another photo of how the place looks like! I'm not kidding it's full house! Photo credits: http://chiamhuiy.blogspot.sg/

HAHA does this looks familiar ? Taking photos and post on instagram, etc! Photo credits: http://chiamhuiy.blogspot.sg/

Her name is Hui Yan! She's one of the bloggers that attended the food tasting. I can't believe she's not 18... hahaha! Cos she looks so young! Yes, teh peng is awesome.. *show peace sign*

First dish to be served:
Drunken cockles, $6.00

I'm not a big fan of spicy food but love the super juicy taste when you bite onto it. It is served cold and it's very spicy for me, *depending on personal preferences if you try it yourself* and NO! I didn't got drunk! Hahaha.

This is another blogger that I met at the event! Her name is Herine! She's a super nice person to talk too! Enjoyed talking with her throughout the dinner. I felt bad cos I was a left hander and I was afraid that I might hit onto her arm.

Second dish:
Vegetables with Egg, Salted Egg and Century Egg, $10

When I always eat zhi char or dine at any chinese restaurant.. this is a must to order... actually.. this is the only vegetable i'm willing to eat without complaining at all. It is cooked with 3 types of eggs. Normal egg, salted egg and century egg (my favourite). The dish is simply delicious, and you wouldn't want to miss out.

Third Dish:
Buttered Ribs (Pork Ribs In Milk Powder), $12
http://static4.sg.orstatic.com/UserPhoto/photopending/0/M2/004CW185FBE62F77F919B5c.jpg
This is the first time I heard of the combination of a regular food item seasoned with milk powder. The first thing that come into my mind when I heard of this dish... was baby milk powder.. but my guess was DEFINITELY wrong... it was condensed milk powder.

Although it's a bit pricey, I think it's worth getting it because it has a unique taste, and you wouldn't regret after to put it inside your mouth. The meat was tender and juicy. Together with the milk powder, it taste like heaven... You must try it! I guess this was my favourite dish at Two Chefs.. it's their signature dish..

Forth Dish:
Pork Floss with Fried Buttered Prawns, $20
http://static2.sg.orstatic.com/UserPhoto/photopending/0/M2/004CW2954FCF397FB3B8A4c.jpg
This is my seocnd favourite dish. The prawn balls were juicy and delectable, topped with crunchy pork floss and mayonnaise, it is crispy on the outside. Very mouthwatering and simply delicious mmhmm! The price of this dish is $20, it's reasonable because prawn dishes are usually expensive. I am highly impressed with this dish and it totally fulfilled my satisfactory.

Fifth Dish:
Golden Mushroom Bean curd, $10

Beancurd, Tofu! If you guys did not know, I don't like tofu.. so I only took a small piece and try. The tofu was soft and tender, the sauce of this dish is sour and sweet and it will go well together if you put onto your rice and eat it.

Enjoyed my time together with other bloggers! Thanks for the lovely invite by Openrice! Dinner was really fun with non-stop chatting.

Ratings:
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8/10
Price: 7/10
Venue: 7/10
Food: 9.5/10

Conclusion: Overall, I rate Two Chefs Eating Place, 8/10. The food they served us (6 of us) were enough and the total cost of this meal was $64. It is roughly the same price if you eat at a regular zi char place. I am very happy with the food here and I'm definitely coming back with my family and friends!

:bow:bowl:l: First time trying out this place. We ordered a plate of kai lan, their famous buttered pork ribs, fried yam and another pork dish. All the dishes came out fast and hot! But i don't really know if the buttered pork ribs was supposed to taste like sweet cheese though. Price wise I'm not very sure as it was a treat. But overall, the service was okay and the food was damn good.

4 of us continued on our zi char dinner quest at two chefs on 26.11.2013.

the zi char stall at a commonwealth drive had good reviews, but honestly i was quite disappointed. while it was better than woh hup at hong lim (which was bad!), it was far, far from the very nice dishes we had at kok sen. in my opinion,it was not even comparable to the forture restaurant at the old holland road coffeeship.

the only dish i really liked was the S$6 blood cockles – pickled raw cockles (腌血蚶) with lots of garlic.
but then i was about the only one eating them as my friends were not into this much & one felt that garlic was too much (though i liked). so it was not representative!

to me, the worst dish was the claypot fish head, though the photo may look ok. its a dish i had not taken for perhaps >10years or longer. though i think most are served cut up& deepfried, i still preferred the one i had 30 years ago at whampoa where they served the head whole & not deep-fried. two chefs did have assam fish head & blackbean sauce song fish head. surely those would be ok – it’s like anyone can do a song fish head, i remember 1 news report said 1 hawker centre had 15 stalls selling it!

the salted egg prawns were ok, tasty but oily, and really not my preferred preparation for prawns.

the golden mushrooms tofu was ok i guess, but quite poor in comparison with kok sen & muliangzai liang kee which were minced pork deep-fried tofu.

the 3-eggs heng chye was watery, taste ok.

overall, it was a very average meal a very average meal can get at any coffeeshop (like 6th avenue coffeeshop). maybe still have to try the muliangzai type of zi char stalls. i guess correspondingly the price is cheap $60nett for 4pax, but then kok sen was cheap too & very much better!

Opened by two chefs who are also brothers, the stall is rustic with an old school charm and is always bustling. I have been here numerous times since my JC days and the bustling scene with snaking long queues still remain after all these years. But it is not hard to understand what draws the crowds. They do serve great food with affordable pricing and it is an ideal place for large group gatherings.

As I mentioned earlier, no visit to Two Chefs is ever complete without an order of their Butter Ribs $8/$12/$16. Made from a secret recipe of butter and condensed milk, the end result is a snowy-beige dusty powder that is crumbly and sweet. Fried also with curry leaves for extra flavor, those tender juicy pork ribs had us smacking our lips and eating even the last lettuce on the plate.

The Three Egg Spinach or Three Colored Spinach or Vegetable with Egg, Century Egg and Salted Egg $8/$10/$14 as it is called here is supposed to be another must order itee. But while I did appreciate how the poached spinach had absorbed the saltiness and creaminess of the trio combination well, the broth or stock was unfortunately too watery and flat for our liking. But perhaps Chef had a bad day with ours, because every else seems to be raving about it.

The Golden Mushroom Beancurd $8/$10/$12 was an enjoyable one. Thick piquant gravy with bouncy chewy golden mushrooms and soft beancurd that simply melted in the mouth, this is best enjoyed with a bowl of rice to soak up every last bit.

These Fried Butter Prawns $15/$20/$25 tasted quite similar to the Butter Ribs. Possibly because they were after all, made from the same secret recipe powder concoction. I preferred the way the pork ribs captured and complimented the essence and sweetness of the powder though, as compared to these prawns. Will probably order the Salted Yolk Prawns instead next time round.

Since i've reviewed about twochefs before, I'll skipped those that I had. The one I newly tried was their Tie Ban Dou Fu /hotplate beancurd, priced from $8, 10 and 12. I think it was quite badly done. As usual, diners would be expecting some vegetables or prawns to come with the beancurd, but I was shocked to see that there's only bean curd and a layer of fried egg underneath. Okay, so maybe we shouldn't be expecting what we have at other zhichar places!

Came here for a zi char meal on a weekend night. The dishes are all pretty good with some standouts. One dish that stood out was the butter pork ribs, which were flavourful and juicy. The ngor hiang was also very delicious being fried to perfection and moist juicy and flavourful. Slightly chewy and bouncy it had great mouthfeel to it. The sweet sauce complemented the dish very well too!

Was bought to this Two Chefs Eating Place by a friend of mine, it is something like zi char stall. I ordered some dishes like Salted Egg Yolk-coated Prawns, Milk Powder Pork Chops. Using milk powder to cook a dish is really rare... and it turns out to be so good! It is so fine, creamy and nice mixture to match with. The prawns were fresh and big, salted egg sauce was also just nice in terms of portion - every part of the prawns were also drenched in the tasty sauce. Overall, food is awesome and

The butter pork ribs here are so so so good. There is no other zi char place in singapore that can do this dish. hence we always have to come back to this place. The ribs are covered with a milky powder which has a malted milk taste. The pieces of meat and crunchy and fresh and are pretty lean. Each piece of meat is boneless too so it makes for easy eating. Overall a fantastic dish!

My first visit to this place, recommended by frends and Openrice review. Called to make reservations but it was useless. We still have to queue up when we reached. Waiting time was around 15 to 20 mins depending on what time you reach. We waited about 15 mins at around 7.30pm. I ordered their signature dish, the Drunken Cockles (middle size) - $10 for the starters. I liked the taste and the cockles were small but fresh. Next Spinach with 3 Coloured Egg. Can use this as your soup. Nice portio

Next Spinach with 3 Coloured Egg. Can use this as your soup. Nice portion for 4 persons. Can really taste the 3 type of eggs they use.

Omelette - $10 had a normal taste like a homecooked omelette.

Golden Mushroom with Beancurd. Gentle on your stomach. Like to beancurd, Really good taste.

Fresh Fish steam. Meat of the fish fresh. No smelly fish taste. Good item to order.

Overall dinner. Excellent place to have a family or friends gathering.
Will go again and bring more friends to the place.
