Noodle itself was delicate, but the pork was way too salty to be "delicious "! The egg and the salad was just average level.

Went on a Thursday night for dinner with a friend as we both had cravings for ramen and the waiting time was around 5 minutes. There are 3 types of soup bases (white, red and black) for customers to choose from and I personally think it's very nice of them as not everyone likes very strong and salty soup base (I'm one of them). So Ii chose the White Aburi Ramen while my friend who likes flavorful soup base chose the Cha Shu Ramen. We also ordered a Soft Shell Crab to share between the two of us.

We also ordered a Soft Shell Crab to share between the two of us. Personally i think the White Aburi Pork Ramen was not too bad and the soup base was just nice (not too bland nor salty). I tried my friend's soup base and it was not too bad also (but a little too salty for my preference) however, i thought that their ramen serving was kind of too small and not filling enough for me! I would appreciate if they can increase their serving of their ramen!

On a side note, I liked their soft shell crab quite a lot! It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside
On the whole, it was just an average dining experience here and I don't think it is good enough to be my first choice ramen place! The meal wasn't very cheap as well (our bill came up to $43.20 in total).

Firstly, i couldn't emphasis how small the shop is! They could not accommodate large group of people, so do not go there on a gathering. I had to split table with my friends, but it is alright, cause the place is so small that we are still pretty close to each other. I had the Black Cha Shu ramen, which is highly recommended by my friend who had tried the same shop in another location. It was disappointing. The soup was bland, and yet so oily. The cha shu is thick, but more than half is made of fats! And i think the noodle is pretty soggy, not to my liking. Perhaps its time to give its other branches a try.

My friends and I reach the shop past 2pm but the staff was nice and we were still able to order the lunch menu which supposedly have ended. There are 3 soup choices for the ramen, the black, red or white Musashi. I choose the white soup duck ramen, and it comes with a side. There are a few sides to choose from too. I choose the chicken karaage. The soup base was thick and was quite salty. I cannot imagine how salty will the black and red soup be. However, the ramen was nice and it saved the soup.

This meal was a late lunch so there wasn't alot of people in the shop, yet i feel that the area is too small. There were only a few seats and i do not think it can accommodate the large number of customers during the peak period.

The Star Vista is simply a food haven! Made a second trip there for Menya Musashi because there was a loooooong queue the first time we went! And also because it is highly raved by many others! The outlet at Star Vista is pretty small and the seats are very near to each other. So for those who value privacy, this might not be an ideal place for you. If you are lucky to be seated near the kitchen, you can see the preparation of your food (or the handsome/serious faces of the chefs) hahaha.

And at Menya Musashi, you get to choose from 3 choices of soup base: White, Black or Red.

White Cha Shu Ramen - $12.90 (4/5)

I prefer my ramen in pork bone broth and did I mention I am a big fan of thick soup base? Don't be fooled by the broth which looks soupy here! It's actually quite thick and I really like it. Not only did the broth taste nice, the cha shu slices were tender and they literally melt in your mouth. Totally orgasmic! Noodles were firm and chewy too.

What's a good bowl of ramen without ajitsuki tamago!? The egg yolk was not as runny as I had expected it to be, but it was still quite good. There you have it, a big bowl of comfort food on a rainy day. Perfect.

Bokuto Gyoza - $5.90 (4/5)

There is just something very different (in a good way) about their gyozas that I simply cannot fathom. We felt that the skin of the gyozas are thinner than the other gyozas we tried before, and the fillings are much different too.

Service wise, the staff were really enthusiastic about refilling our cups of water even though we just took a few sips. And in case some of you are unaware, it is acceptable and considered polite to slurp your noodles in the Japanese culture. So don't be shy, go ahead and slurp your ramen!

The interior of the place is actually very small and honestly, I felt quite claustrophobic, especially when my bf and I were ushered to this tiny corner right next to the open concept. Therefore u can imagine one's difficulty in trying to get in and out of the seat without actually bumping into the patrons next to you. Surprisingly, food was served extremely fast, within 5 minutes after we have ordered. However, the noodles are not served piping hot which I feel is very crucial in enjoying a bowl of japanese ramen.

For me, i ordered the white cha su ramen. Even though mine was served slightly hotter, my soup base was far more salty than that of the black ramen! Its as if a bottle of salt has been added in by mistake! The serving is also really small and not satisfying. For $12.90, I had just two pieces of cha siew ( of which half is fats and skin), half an egg, some leek and a piece of seaweed.

It was quite scary to find a piece of used napkin hidden beneath the 2 pieces of napkin that came along with the chopsticks since the remnants of the stains strongly resembled that of the red ramen, of which none of us ordered. That was indeed a turn off.

Definitely not going back there again even though the service is good since for the price, this meal is definitely too expensive and the recommended ramen is not highly recommended at all

I ordered mine with the black soup base but I got to try the red and white too as well from my fellow dining mates. For Tsukemen, you usually dip the noodles into the soup base so it will definitely be a concentrated one. But if you only just dip the noodles in so that the soup lightly coats the noodles, it's still acceptable for the saltiness. Out of the 3 soup bases, the black one (supposedly with black garlic, but I cannot pinpoint any specific taste to it) is the saltiest. The red base is similar to the white base, just that it has added chili oil/powder to it. So based on your personal preference, choose your base accordingly. The soup bases are very rich and has a layer of oil on top, so dip in sparingly.

The noodles themselves were quite springy. But the regular portion (120g) is a bit small. If you order the usual priced tsukemen though, they will give you unlimited toppings of the noodles (up to 5x).

I find the cha shu to be a bit hard - tastewise it's like the roasted pork belly meat you get from roasted meat stalls, but even saltier. The fat present within the meat melts in your mouth with each bite but I prefer to remove the fat for health reasons.

As for the egg, the yolk is not runny enough and also not well-marinated. I'm particular about my ramen egg; this one does not pass the test.

Generally did not regret trying out the Tsukemen, as I like the texture of their noodles. But if I have to pay the original price, I will not be eating this again. Big-eaters and those who are not particular about the egg can consider this though.

Went to Menya last Sunday to check another box off the "Must-Eat" ramen hotspots in SG (we've probably tried at least 7 different ramen styles in Singapore as offered by the host of ramen restaurants). Having been to Star Vista a couple of times now, we were anticipating the usual snake-queues at Menya (the other 'snake' being at Itacho Sushi), despite the rainy December weather. So, we only attempted to get a seat really late into the afternoon at about 3-4pm. True enough, this strategy paid off and we waited only about 5 minutes plus to get a table for two (did we mention that we were the only ones in the queue?).

True to its namesake, the local franchise of Menya does not discount the Japanese hospitality to be found in its flagship Shinjuku outlet. The waitress offered us glasses of water while we waited, never hesitating to offer us more water, updating us on the status of available tables, and introducing their menu offerings to us - without a single frown on her face! We're not sure about you guys, but good service before even tucking into a meal proper creates that whole positive atmosphere which certainly lends to the memorability of a great meal. The unfortunate part was that this fantastic waitress was not local (Chinese National, we believe). Not that we are biased or anything, but to date, we have not met any local waitress with a remotely similar level of service - Japanese restaurant or not. If any managers in the Star Vista franchise of Menya are reading this, give this valued employee a pat on her back - or make it two!

However, this phantasmal experience would find us crashing back to reality upon entering the restaurant, as well as what transpired thereafter.

The first sights and sounds greeting us was a tremendous furore of activity - be it in the kitchen which we beheld in plain sight behind a glass panel, or the chatter and banter of other patrons tightly packed in the small dining area. Truly reminiscent of a 60's coffee shop! Unless that was the image Menya wanted to project, it didn't seem quite fitting for a high-profile ramen chain that reveres the legendary "Sword Saint", Miyamoto Musashi as its inspiration. The aroma to be found in other restaurants, tightly packed or not, was more of a stench in Menya, reeking of oily rags and a subtle hint of stale squid. Although we would probably remember the hospitality of the Chinese waitress for a while to come, the 'ambience' at Menya certainly dispelled any good impressions we had of the place - albeit lasting for as long as we were there.

We ordered their signature Cha Shu Ramen with Black Soup Base (we made this into a 15.90 SGD++ set which included a plate of Chicken Karaage), a plate of Green Salad at 6.90 SGD++, and a plate of Sliced Smoked Duck Breast at 6.90 SGD++. Since the waitress (not the Chinese waitress at the door) suggested warm tea to wash it all down, we went for a cup at 1.00 SGD++.

The husband was still wondering what the hype about Menya was all about when the Ramen was served. What happened in terms of gastronomical experience next was too negative to describe, so we will attempt to use more neutral adjectives to allow you, the reader, some breadth for interpretation should you wish to go through the same experience as us.

The ramen 'gravy', as aptly named, was black. But unlike soup bases from other ramen joints, this was more of a 'gravy' (note the inverted commas), which lingered in your nose in similar fashion as what we have described about the restaurant environment. Perhaps the primary ingredient in the soup base was squid ink and generous amounts of pork fat, we thought. To our disbelief, the manager told us that the black soup base of Menya is based on black garlic! Now, we have had numerous experiences with black garlic - in powdered pill form, as an ingredient to dishes like Bak Kut Teh, and even in its original food as bought from the supermarket (yes, we have tried peeling the cloves of a black garlic bulb and eating them direct). Nothing in Menya's black soup base tasted anything remotely like the varieties of black garlic we have tried. Absolutely nothing (when squid ink is the first thing that comes to mind, it's pretty obvious, don't you think?).

As alluded to earlier, the soup was pretty thick and oily, probably more than what your palate can take (aka jelat) after a couple of mouthfuls (just look at the photograph and see for yourself). Nonetheless, the husband didn't want to waste his money and food, so he had as much of the soup base as he could take. At this point, we have to add that Menya's choice of Houji Cha (Roasted Green Tea) as their de facto "Japanese Tea" item is excellent as it really does wonders in washing down the soup base as well as memories of ever having consumed it. Best of all, the tea is refillable - much needed, indeed!

The ramen noodles were a bit on the tough side, rather than the springy or smooth or spongy varieties to be found in other ramen restaurants. To be honest, the noodles didn't seem very well-cooked. But then, this could be a ramen style we have not tried before so we won't delve into it. The cha shu was evidently seared to make it more fragrant as observable from the slightly burnt edges - a technique employed by other ramen restaurants as well. However, this was not enough to mask the stale pork taste found in the fats and lean textures of meat in the center region of the cha shu.

All in all, we felt that the ramen was truly more hype than substance. Perhaps the chefs were too tired after having served a huge lunch crowd? We don't know. Perhaps you, our valued reader, can be the judge to that.

The other dishes we ordered, were nothing much to shout about, with the Sliced Smoked Duck Breast in particular, to be leaning more on the salty side than the smoked fragrance to be found in sliced smoked duck breast offerings in other restaurants - Japanese, Chinese, Western. Lastly, the Chicken Karaage was more powdery in texture than crispy - maybe the flour mixture was a tad too much or the oil in which the karaage was fried wasn't hot enough.

In summary, a mixed bag of emotions swelled over us as we left Menya. On one hand, we remembered the good service rendered by that Chinese waitress, and Menya's choice of de facto "Japanese tea". On the other, it was the less favourable memories that would probably spell the end of our visit to Menya - at least in Singapore.

Staff over there are quite friendly too but due to the small space constraint, they are unable to cover every tables to refill their drinks.

The black version of the Ramen should be using miso soup mixed together with black sesame or black soya sauce to get that dark color soup base. I felt that it is too salty and I am unable to drink too much of the soup unlike the other ramen restaurant where I likes to drink their soup base.

The chicken meat should be marinated with teriyaki sauce before added into the ramen but the meat of the chicken is a bit too tough and below my food standard as I think it can be more tender and nice to eat. The Ramen is nice but seems like those yellow noodles (Those seen in prawn noodles) to me without those noodles taste.

The white version of the Ramen but still too salty (Thought not as salty as the black version) from my point of view as I need to drink more water after eating over at this restaurant. The Cha Shu is nicely done with skin having a bit of over burn taste. Overall is still a nice dish for the meat part.
The restaurant used the same ramen for all different taste of Ramen in their stall so the texture is the same as the black version of Ramen.

The Cuttlefish Soken Karaage served on our table is actually quite different from the one shown in the menu. I believe they had put too much flour on the cuttlefish before deep frying it. The dish is then sprinkle with some curry powder and curry leaves. I would say this dish is not really back while the cuttlefish is still juicy when you bite onto it.

Dokkodo 3 Mix Appetizer is mix up of Marinated Octopus, Hotate (Scallop skin), Wakame (Seaweed). Taste wise. Normal for Octopis and Wakame but I do not like the taste of the Hotate. Maybe my standard for this dish is quite high as I had eaten at quite a few Japanese restaurant and Hotate or Scallop skin is one of my favorite dish.

Unfortunately it all went downhill from there, I ordered the White Cha Su Ramen and frankly it just wasn't that great. The noodles weren't springy at all. The stock/soup wasn't even remotely tasty, I felt like I was eating instant noodles with an AVERAGE packet of flavoring powder. The Cha Su was the only saving grace for this bowl of ramen, it had just the right amount of fat and melted in my mouth.

I definitely won't be going back to this place anytime soon or in the foreseeable future.
