Aoki is definitely my most-frequently visited Japanese restaurant. It is own by the Les Amis group, which is the largest fine dining food chain in Singapore. Here’s my favorite food in AOKI, also my favorite Mazechirashi($40) in Singapore. Comes a very large and pretty bowl, but the food inside is even much prettier.
The sashimi cubes to shari rice ratio is 2:1, all the sashimi are in very high quality, and there’s no cheap salmon inside.
(When i went to Japan and visited several Michelin 3 stars Japanese restaurants, i confirmed with the chef that high-end Japanese restaurants will not sell salmon, because salmon means ‘cheap’).Instead, what we got is toro (fatty tuna), tamago (sweet omelette, which is some of the best in town), yellowtail, ikura (salmon roe), etc. and UNI!!!

Nigiri Sushi Tokusen ($55++) comes with 9 pieces of nigiri sushi and 1 tuna roll. Compare to the Nigiri Sushi Gyo-Sen ($33++) which comes with 7 pieces nigiri, this one uses the more expensive fish.

How can i resist toro? It is one of the best pieces in the set, absoultly melting in my mouth. Besides that, the unagi was also melting in my mouth. Their tamago is always my favorite as well.

The Nigiri Sushi Tokusen also comes with Chawanmushi, which you won’t get in the Gyo-sen set, neither Mazechirashi or other cheaper sets. There are lots of ‘liao’ inside, which includes shrimp, chicken, mushroom, kani…

Then the server comes with a two layer box, which was the Shokado (松花堂 $42++). She opened the box for us, it looks so pretty and makes us mouth-watering.

Some dessert to end our lunch. The ice cream of the day was mango flavor, along with housemade matcha pudding and mint jelly. Their pudding is all time favorite in their dessert section, really smoothie and strong flavor.

A friend bought me chirashi don lunch@ aoki today on 10.12.2014.

this like the gold standard of chirashi don, according to many reviewers. ^^

well was it for me? must say it was very good.

we were served an otoshi. very nice. not sure what it was. some shellfish maybe. mirugai (geoduck)?? texture yes but didn’t look quite like.

nice salad with ponzu sauce.

& the main event mazechirashi don. there was uni (not much), chutoro (seemed quite a bit), & the usual hamachi, salmon, maguro, tamago, bits of anago (conger eel), and ikura, also some pickled ginger.

the sashimi amount was substantial & very tasty eaten with the rice. basically

it was a barachirashi don. it would beat tatsu’s very expensive & ordinary S$40 chrashi don hands down.

ginza kuroson S$20 chirashi don lunch set didn’t have uni or chutoro, so not really up for comparison but that was just S$20!

if i am just looking for a very tasty barachirashi don set, then the one at sun with moon was pretty good. it came with an excellent salmon fish head miso soup too. again w/o expensive uni & chutoro.

and recently i had very good chirashi don lunch set at sumiya for just S$18.80. it had thick cube cuts so it was more of a chirashi don than a barachirashi.

so i guess indeed aoki would ace them all. all except mikuni for me.

mikuni’s chirashi don had 2 thick slices of chutoro, hotate, uni, botan ebi, aburi salmon etc at S$45 (after 50% feed at raffles discounts). for me even aoki’s very nice barachirashi don was no comparison.

& it is available for dinner also. but of course feed at raffles 50% discounts only for up to 5pax on sundays & mondays & for only 2pax other days. no perfect deal.

nice pickles (not salty) & ginger.

Quite nice dessert, a plum jelly, nice penn a cotta & ice cream.

For S$40, i can definitely do this again!

Am not a newbie here, and i have been eating chirashi for so many rounds until a friend recommended me to try the beef rice here, which is a seasonal item and it is not on the regular menu. Sushi is good, although you get it all on one platter instead of getting it served one by one. The star of the afternoon is definitely the chirashi though, which is about 2 parts assorted fish, salmon roe, creamy uni and egg to 1 part rice. Would definitely come back multiple times for this.

Considering that you could easily eat up a bill much higher at other subpar chains like Sushi Tei, Aoki's lunch is terrific value and definitely highly recommended.

I've reviewed Aoki before and I was blown away with the super awesome chirashi set lunch my first time there. Now I'm back to try again (yes same dish) and see if the standard lives up. This place is quite high end so I wouldn't suggest dressing too sloppy when you are dining here. We got a large private room as it wasn't too crowded during lunch and we had 5 pax in the group. They have booth seats that we walk past but those were meant to seat 4. If you have a big group, do make reservation in advance to avoid disappointment.

As usual, the starter is a simple salad with fresh vegetables tossed in a salty dressing with a hint of sesame. Tasty, simple (a tad too salty) but nothing great to shout about. I wish they would serve a different and more innovative starter like some seafood or perhaps some cold noodles.

The star of the set lunch...a large bowl of Chirashi! Delightful cubes of different fishes (salmon, tuna, yellowtail and more) with cubed eggs, slices of tiny cucumbers and dollops of divine uni (urchin) throughout the bowl. You mix it up with the rice underneath and dig in! They also gave some nice vegetables and radishes as sides. Now the first time I had this, it was sweet, salty, and simply awesome. Plus there was enough 'sauce' or liquid to coat the rice properly. This time round, I felt it was a little bit dry and ... slightly disappointing. The fish was fresh but it wasn't as melt-in-your-mouth like I had before. And because there wasn't enough moisture, I had leftover rice that were too dry. For me, it wasn't a consistent standard. If you haven't tried this before, I still think it's good to order. If you have, perhaps try another item on the menu.

Dessert consists of 3 items - a very delicious strawberry mousse/jelly item, a plum jelly and a milk tea ice cream. I love love love the milk tea ice cream. The flavour is creamy, dense and so refreshingly cold. The strawberry item is also very good and feels very playful on your palate. The plum jelly adds that tiny bit of tang to the whole dish. Overall, very nice.

The service was good as expected plus there wasn't a long waiting time for the food, but as the main factor (which was the food) didn't excite me and this is not a cheap place to dine in, I'm not in a hurry to come back.

This is the setting at the counter seat. We were given a corner seat as there are 3 of us, so that we can talk. The otoshi given at the counter seat is different from the ones at the capsule seat. Appreciate the lotus. Definitely a different touch from the seaweed.

Then came the mazechirashi. 3 of us ordered the same dish as the mazechirashi is definitely mind blowing than the nigiri sushi. I can never get enough of the mazechirashi here, the sashimi here is bite-sized and there is always sashimi when you are done with the rice.

Desserts are mochi with red bean, pudding and clear ume jelly. There isnt much to rave about the mochi red bean, but one of them fell in love with the pudding, such texture of the pudding is rare in singapore and is often not available ala-carte unless a set meal is purchased. Another friend loves the ume jelly as its very refreshing.

This was a 1.30pm seating this round and i would say its definitely a better time than the 12pm seating. We were not rushed and we are left to ourselves chit chatting even though its past 2.30pm.

Probably, the service can be improved as the waitress and captain can be quite cold. There isnt any smile on their faces.

My friend ordered the 9 piece nigiri sushi set which cost him $50. He said the sashimi is top grade and very fresh.

He urged me to try but i rather stick with my mazechirashi anytime as there is no uni sushi in the nigiri set and there is at least a spoon of uni in the mazechirashi bowl.

The dessert was served at about 1pm as we need to clear the tables by 1.30pm for the next seating. This time i was served mochi, chocolate strawberry ice cream and the usual plum jelly.

The set might look little but its actually very filling. Highly recommend the mazechirashi set as the sashimi and the rice ratio is 2:1, and the wasabi is fresh here! The only downside is, the service here is inconsistent, or perhaps it depends on who is the waitress taking care of the tables during the shift.

Reservations is a must as they only make 10 bowls of chirashi per day. The wasabi is also freshly grated. The restaurant entrance is rather private and it doesnt show 'Aoki' in english but its in Japanese. It was dimly lit and we were greeted by a waitress dressed in kimono where you will be asked for your name which was written on a tiny piece paper.

The capsule seat can only fit up to 4 people and if you have 5 people, you will be required to sit in a private room where 1 person has to spend at least $120. The seat is a little squeezy for the bigger sized people but overall, it is okay. There is a sliding door where you can choose to close it for privacy. There are 2 seatings at lunch, 1 at 12pm and another at 1.30pm. The waitress did tell us politely that they have to clear the table for the next seating. Overall, the 1hour is good enough for this 3 course meal.

This plate of salad shows the skills of the chef which the cucumber is thinly sliced and its almost transparent. This plate of salad taste different as thinly sliced food allows more air to touch your tongue while chewing, pockets of air bring out the flavors more.

Mazechirashi set which the rice and the ingredients are 2:1 ratio. Most places serve lesser sashimi but aoki has the freshest sashimi. I am not a sashimi fan but the sashimi is so fresh that i finished every bit of it. It is so good that i ate the sashimi without the rice. There is tuna, tuna belly, uni, scallop, salmon roe, squid, shrimp and tamago. Am a big fan of uni (sea urchin)! And there is a shrimp head in every bowl of miso soup. Its the sweetest i ever had!

There is also a side dish which consists of preserved yam, eggplant and carrots i think? It was something very different for me.

The trio of desserts consists of ume jelly, milk pudding and strawberry ice cream. The desserts are very fresh and if i am not wrong, it should be handmade. The ice cream is very light with a strawberry flavour, the transparent ume jelly melts in your mouth and lastly, my favorite dessert of all.

I gotta say, its extremely difficult to find a good milk custard in Singapore, since the last one i had in the other restaurant which is closed as they couldnt find another place for rent. Am happy to have the milk pudding that afternoon. The custard is very soft and not sweet, the 'syrup' should be burnt sugar? I am not really sure but i will definitely ask the waitress on my next visit. It tasted a little like peanuts in caramel.

All the dishes are done so exceptionally well and its so detailed. Favorite Japanese restaurant definitely! Oh and they are closed on Sundays!

I have finally had the chance to try out Aoki restaurant and I was really delighted as I adore Japanese food. This restaurant serves authentic Japanese food. My friends and I actually went for lunch and already decided that I wanted to have the Chirashi set ($35++ lunch) since I saw many reviews raving it. When you enter, you realized the restaurant’s ambience and concept is very unique. We were ushered to the seat inside a cabin with sliding doors. It seems like you are eating inside a train. The set came with some appetizing salad and small portion of cabbage vegetable. The salad was accompanied by sesame sauce with thinly sliced translucent radishes and cucumbers; it was really the good chopping skill from the chef to achieve such effect. Then came the chirashi, it was filled with raw salmon, tuna, clams, fish egg roe, squid and many more. The rice portion was actually less than the ingredients, so it was really worth it. After which, the dessert came in a small tray, there were strawberry ice cream, plum jelly and pudding. I love the ice cream the best actually. Anyway, I like everything about this place except the fact that I have limited time to eat perhaps it is also because that I am a slow eater. There were actually two sessions from 12pm to 1.30pm and 2pm to 3.30pm. We went for the earlier session but then I felt that the waitress was trying to clear the plates and serve us soonest possible so that we can eat and leave soon. I feel that it was kindda rush in my opinion but I think that they couldn’t help it cause they needed time to prepare for the session. Overall, worth a try, a little pricey but you will not regret after tasting the food there.

Being one who'll never pass on a chance to catch the skillful sushi chefs in action, I opted for a seat at the counter. But the tranquil atmosphere of the restaurant makes it an ideal location to catch up with friends- you should consider sitting at the private booths on the second floor if you intend on doing so.

The meal started off with a tasty braised renkon otoshi ($3++), followed by a simple but refreshing salad- for a dose of fiber and vitamins!

What makes Aoki’s mazechirashi an excellent deal is the vast variety of seafood it features. Unearthing the assortment of fresh sashimi piled atop, I discovered pieces of buttery uni, shoyu-marinated ikura, as well as cubes of ebi, tako, shime saba, kanpachi, shiromi, maguro and chutoro. The well-seasoned sushi rice was also topped with delightfully spongy cubes of tamago castella, slices of cucumber, nori strips, shreds of perilla and a dollop of nama wasabi. Needless to say, I polished it all off with much relish!

Colorful tsukemono, pickled ginger and a bowl of prawny miso soup were served along with the mazechirashi.

Variety pleases me, and the trio of the dessert miniatures- namely plum wine jelly, smooth milk pudding drizzled with caramel sauce and icy muskmelon sherbet– certainly made for a light but satisfying ending to the meal. A cup of genmaicha was also served to aid digestion- a thoughtful gesture on the kitchen's part!

Food aside, the service was attentive and I loved the pretty tableware. To round it all off, I had great company as well!

The mazechirashi set is priced at $35++.

P.S. Do make a reservation before visiting Aoki as the restaurant can be quite packed at lunchtime. If you're planning to order the mazechirashi, it would be wise to indicate so in your booking- I heard that the restaurant only makes 10 bowls of it a day for lunch. どうぞめしあがれ!
