It is interesting that throughout the meal, the diners felt that the food served at Asia Grand Restaurant is closer to Teochew cuisine despite them being a Cantonese Restaurant. One other point to note, Asia Grand Restaurant is one of the few restaurants that offer a table big enough for 15 pax.

On the table, before our dinner began were plate of appetizer of fish cake and peppers. Most of us find it strange that this appetizer was served instead of the usual peanuts or pickled.

We ordered a Special Set Menu for 10 person at $598 ++. As we have 15 pax, we added for 5 pax. In this set menu for dinner, 8 dishes were served.
To get the dinner rolling, we started with the Steamed Fresh Prawn, 白灼生虾 as the first dish for this special menu. Anything that is fresh when steamed, the natural flavour and its sweetness were emitted. And this was the case for our Steamed Fresh Prawn.

As we have diner who doesn't take shark fins, as such the Braised Minced Chicken Thick Soup with Egg White, 西湖鸡茸羮 was a good choice as soup. The texture and taste resemble the usual shark fin soup. But personally, I am never a fan of soup, and not even to mention the thick gluey kind. Anyhow, I still went ahead to try and I could savour the chicken aroma in the soup and there was a good amount of minced chicken in it.

It was shortly followed by the Braised Sliced Sea Whelk with Vegetables & Abalone Sauce, 鲍汁碧绿海螺片. Nothing worth mentioning about this dish except that the seasoning added to this dish was at a perfect ratio.

Who doesn't welcome the Roasted Whole Boneless Suckling Pig, 南乳去骨猪? With a layer of fats in between the crispy skin and tender succulent meat with sufficient marinate, most couldn't resist the charm. This truly is an indulgent.

The fifth dish of the night is the Fried Crispy Duck, 脆皮香酥鸭. True to its name, it is indeed crispy and salty. Other than that, no other characteristics. I heard many, even one of the diner in our group was raving about its Peking Duck. Maybe it is better than the fried one.

Moving on was the Steamed Fresh Pa-Ting Fish with Olives, Garlic and Chilli, 榄角蒜茸辣椒蒸八丁鱼. I thought usually the Teochew would use olives in dishes. I suppose this was the dish that cause confusion and most thought Asia Grand was a Teochew Restaurant. Another usual was the fish for the dish, it uses Patin Fish, a Malaysian fresh water fish. I am not a fan of fresh water fish as it usually has soil taste in the flesh. At least, this unpleasantness wasn't in the fish.

The last dish before dessert was the Crispy Rice In Seafood Soup, 金银海鲜泡饭. Many diners always associate rice in soup as a Teochew dish. Some how I am puzzled with this phenomenon as we Teochew (I am one.) don't eat that way. And my Dad always complains about this highly debatable dish as Teochew dish too. Anyway ... I suppose this is another element that contribute to the thought Grand Asia Restaurant as a Teochew Restaurant. Both white rice and fried crispy rice were both added to the bowl of seafood soup. Hence it provided both texture to the the dish and together with aromatic seafood soup, most would not refuse this comfort food.

The meal was ended with the Red Bean Pan Cake, 豆沙窝饼 as dessert.

Quantity was sufficient for all 15 person at the table and quality was beyond satisfactory. Food was considerably delish at a reasonable price. The ambience was the typical Chinese restaurant that gets noisy. As such, I would recommend Asia Grand Restaurant for dinner to all.

Die die must drink this!! It tasted heavenly, with ingredients like winter melon ( obviously), prawn, scallops, vege etc. The soup was superb sweet lor and the melon would just melted in your mouth! The melon was so big that we could each have 3-4 bowls. Yum Yum!! One thing to complement was their service => Thumbs up!! The staff would refill the soup for us almost immediately, and also helped us to scrap the melon. One of them was humorous too. He actually told us dun waste food, kept asking us to refill which was unlike other places, who tried to clear your plates even before you finished your food.

Guess what? The Chinese name of this vege is called 娃娃菜 ( Doll Doll Vegetable), cute rite? Tasted like white cabbage with golden mushroom and black mushroom. Kinda like 家常便饭, very home-cooked style.

Sheng Noodles with Shredded Duck

This must be the "leftover" of our Peking Duck. I was still wondering whether they were trying to cheat us by giving us only the skin!! Hahaha. But I would prefer ee mian rather than the sheng noodles though. Still, they did a good job and we finished the noodles even though we were already 101% full..

I finally had the chance to try Asia Grand's Peking Duck, the specialty of this restaurant. Wrapped in seemingly popiah-taste-alike skin, the crispy duck skin and succulent duck meat soaked in sweet dark sauce makes for an excellent start for the meal. Every serving is also accompanied by garlic for flavor garnishing. The chips are also crispy and not soggy. The Peking Duck at Asia Grand is also easily the most value-for-money in Singapore.

I was truly surprised by the subtle difference in quality of this Sweet & Sour Chicken dish. The sweet and sour sauce was smooth and clings onto every inch of the meat evenly, and every piece is truly glorious. It would be perfect to complement with a bowl of rice.

This dish of Golden Salted Egg Yolk Prawns is my favourite pick of the night. I can enjoy this again and again with a good dosage of rice. The salted egg yolk paste is smooth and savoury, and doesn't impose on the taste of the prawns. You can still taste the juiciness and fragrance of the prawns themselves. The presentation also looks really appealing. I can't wait to dig in already!

The Yam Brisket and Stir-Fried Vegetables was visually appealing but was a little jelat for me. Generally it's good because it's flavourful, but I guess I'd prefer something lighter.

I am biasedly interested in this because I saw my favourite egg tofus in this Claypot Egg Tofu dish, and it turns out to be deliciously rich and fragrant. The generosity of the ingredients also made it an enjoyable dish.

As I was getting to be on the full side of the meal, the Braised Ee-fu Noodles with Mushrooms and Chives was subjected to a stricter level of surveillance when it comes to taste. I guess it is generally okay, but rather unmemorable. It's really just ee-fu noodles, but I must say it's well-flavoured, topped with lots of mushrooms.

Once again, enjoyed myself at Asia Grand Restaurant though I think the service is still hurriedly functional rather than trying to achieve a holistic enjoyable experience for diners. For a quick recommendation, try the Peking Duck and Salted Egg Yolk Prawns.

but somehow, perhaps due to heightened expectations, i wasnt as impressed as i probably should have been. here are some of the dishes which i felt were pretty interesting

the pan fried cheong fun with XO chili sauce ($7) had a hint of the XO flavour that wasnt too overwhelming, and when we piled on the hae bee condiments, it was c'est manifique!

the char siew sous ($4.20 for three) were delicious! the pastry was flaky, slightly sweet, and the filling moist and delicious

surprising tasty was the lean meat porridge with preserved egg ($8). it was the fried you tiao that came with it that completely stole the show. it was beautifully fried to a crisp, without the oily greasiness, and added a lovely crunch to the porridge.

the fried spring roll with fish roe and wasabi ($4.80) is probably something you'll never find in other dim sum restaurants! quite an interesting dish, and of course i LOVED the sparkly flavour of the wasabi within
it wasnt the overwhelming shoot-up-your-nose kind, but it added a different dimension to this dish.

the baked custard bun ($4.20) totally looked like a bo lo bun!!! haha. so cute right! i always like the pastry-like crust on top. and the savoury-sweet filling was delicious! although i would have preferred it to be oozier and a bit more viscous and abundant. haha i felt it was a little lacking in terms of quantity and texture. but i loved the taste anyways!

Steamed Glutinous Rice Dumpling in Lotus Leaf - $4.80++: In general, this is quite average too, another good filler for hungry stomachs. There were copious amounts of ingredients tucked within the dumpling that you would feel it's worth every penny.

I didn't try my favourite dim sum Custard Buns because I read reviews that their custard fillings don't flow, and I didn't want to disappoint myself too much. But seeing that their other dim sum really hit the spot, maybe I'll give it a try the next time. Their other specialty dish Peking dish - $38++ is also very affordable as compared to other Chinese restaurants.

While they serve some really awesome solid good dimsum, Asia Grand can up their ante and prestige by brushing up their horrible service. I'm not going to mince my words too much on this - but their staff are impatient, unfriendly and unprofessional, perhaps with the exception of one. As it was a surprise birthday celebration, I reminded two of the staff repeatedly (three times, may I emphasize) on that but when the time came, the staff simply placed the cake in the middle of the table in its original wrapping. No lit candle and the cake was not even unwrapped. It is quite shocking that a supposedly seasoned restaurant could actually be so so inexperienced! I won't be recommending this place to anyone for important occasions because I have no confidence that this place can handle any unforeseen circumstances. But if you want to have simply good dim sum at affordable prices as an everyday, non-formal affair, do try this place - it's only at $15/pax* with much better ambience than Victor's Kitchen. At least you have comfortable seats and round tables with ample elbow and knee space here... but Victor's Kitchen still remains at the top of my dim sum list because they have my beloved custard buns. I am biased, oh well.

*$15/pax is for low to mid-appetite range people, and depending on what you order. Look at menu at link below to gauge better.

Not a very conventional place for people of our age, I'd expected to see lots of families and old couples yumcha-ing on a public holiday afternoon. Surprisingly, there were quite a number of youngsters who caught up with this hidden gem at Odeon Towers.

Dimsum is always a great excuse to indulge in long lunches and somehow I just don't get sick of it even after consecutive days of the same dishes. Except for its 流沙包 (custard egg yolk bun), all other dishes managed to meet our expectations with its fine dimsum served. For a slightly more authentic touch, some of the senior service staff speak Cantonese as their mother tongue, feeling as though we're back in Hong Kong.

Some of my friends say this is a staple for all dimsum meals. I'm not a fan of charsiew, so I can't offer my take on this. It has managed to satisfy my two other picky friends' tastebuds though, so I reckon this is above average and worth a shot!

Bite-sized egg tarts with flaky crust, this is my favourite serving style. With its warm fillings and soft tender egg curd, it was goodness encapsulated in a mouthful. I liked how the crust wasn't too thick and complemented the curd well. The fillings were also rich and not overly sweet.

As you might know if you've read my previous reviews, hargao is my staple at any dimsum places I go to. This hasn't disappointed at all. The prawns used inside were fresh and had a natural sweetness to it, unlike the crunchy processed prawns that some places use. The dumpling skin was thin enough to keep the fillings wrapped yet doesn't fall apart upon your first bite, nor does it stick to your teeth. Have it while it's hot though, while the skin is soft and slightly chewy.

This was perhaps the only other dish besides its 流沙包 (custard egg yolk bun) that didn't quite impress. I thought the 'fun' was a tad too thick and the sauce had a slight peanut taste to it that didn't quite sit well with me. It wasn't too bad, just a matter of preference I guess. There was quite a generous serving of prawns in it, I would have liked it better if the 'fun' was much thinner and smoother. One of my favourites is the scallops rendition from Royal China, right opposite Asia Grand.

It was quite an interesting presentation and we thought we ordered some fanciful dish without us knowing. The death sentence is always pronounced, at least to me, when you peel open so cautiously to realise it doesn't flow at all. The fillings weren't well mixed, it had a much higher proportion of egg yolk and I couldn't really taste the slight sweetness of the custard in it. There was also an odd aftertaste that was kinda familiar, yet a first to appear in 流沙包. We couldn't quite figure out what that was, but it didn't enhance the dish for sure.

The brown swirls didn't have any taste to it, quite deceiving as I thought there would be some special flavour to it. I didn't quite like the bun too, it was a bit too thick, and it had a loose airy texture that made it rougher than the usual.

An ordinary looking dish but managed to impress quite a bit! For a start, there's real fish roe toppings. The fillings were very fresh and juicy, with tender meat and prawn chunks, and I like how it was different from usual siew mai, with a stronger mushroom taste in it. It added a unique fragrance to the dish and wasn't just the normal 'boring' siew mai. It would have been better if there was just a little less skin though. But that's just me being a little picky, as the excess at the edges bothered me a little, tasting some parts with just skin.

This reminded me of the wonderfully addictive dish at Kow Loon Tim Sum. This wasn't quite well done though, the mango and prawn pieces felt like two distinct dishes instead of a complement to each other. The type of mango chosen wasn't perfect for this, it wasn't ripe and sweet enough to melt in your mouth and add on to the sweetness of the prawns. Fresh prawns used and I liked the crunch and flavour of the sesame coated skin nonetheless.

Pan fried to a nice golden brown (albeit abit oily), this is perhaps the best part of any gyozas to give that extra crisp. It could have been crispier, as this one with juicy meat packed inside felt more like a xiaolongbao. The skin was also a tad too thick, but I liked the tasty fillings inside.

This is supposed to be a seasonal dish, and we were surprised by the huge serving size. The meat was succulent and had a slight chew to it. It had a very homemade touch to it with the irregular edges. A personal preference though, I didn't quite like the strong taste of vegetables and spring onions in it. Quite a recommended dish if you like vegetables!

It was a very warm and cosy setting, felt very family-like and I would probably bring my family here for dimsum next time. The dishes were all very finely done and lived up to our expectations in general. It quite matched up to Royal China, in my opinion, as I like different dishes in both places. Seems like they're also famous for their Peking duck, tempting to go back for a taste of it!

Dim Sum always sounds good to eat in the daytime. I have weird cravings for this stuff every weekend. Ever since the first visit, Asia grand has became my weekly dim sum place for my craving. I will never forget to order my favorite among all which is har gao. Chunks of fresh bursty prawns are mixed into a delicious paste that’s steamed inside a sticky glutinous rice dough where you can't get it from other restaurant! It is definitely a must try item when you pay a visit to this place!

Formerly from Asia Grand Hotel, Asia Grand Restaurant was set up by the original owners of the popular Tsui Hang chain of restaurants, which has since closed down.

A brightly lighted interior greets you as you step into the rather cramp restaurant, which incidentally, was packed with people. Floor to ceiling windows offer a clear view of passers by at ground level, seperated only by thin veiled curtains. The lack of privacy is further enhanced by the closely placed tables which makes it hard not to eavesdrop.

The appetizer was a mixture of Capsicum, fish cakes and bell peppers, which was rather intriguing given that I've never tried anything like it. The fishcake cubes took on a slight tinge of the bell pepper taste and proved to be a nice way to start dinner rolling.

Braised Shark's Fin Soup with Shredded Chicken & Bamboo Pith - Honestly, for a restaurant such as Asia Grand, I would have expected better shark's fin soup. Not just quality of fins wise, but overall preparation of the soup as well. The soup was way too starchy and oily by any measure. The fins were of rather inferior quality but portions were still decent. Overall an average dish and no more.

Peking Duck - Our unanimous star of the evening - the humble Peking duck. With crackling crispy skin thats almost fat free wrapped in thin yet chewy egg crepes, you will be hard pressed to find any substitutes with similar quality at such a low price of $28 a duck (ongoing promotion).

Baked Lobster with Egg Yolk - The lobster got me all excited and was one of the reasons why we chose to order the set menu instead of going ala carte. My hopes shattered when I saw the size of the lobsters. They were tiny, weighing in at most the size of a huge prawn. The meat was barely a spoonful, which was absolutely pathetic. Berates aside, I must admit that the lobster was quite tasty, with the saltiness from the egg yolk complementing the slightly sweet lobster flesh. However, the egg yolk could have been saltier to further bring out the contrast.

Duck Fried Rice - Wondering what happened to the meat from the Peking duck Well, you have your answer. The rice was moist and rather well fried together with the fibrous yet tender duck meat. However, it did get rather bland after a while. I mean, how tasty can it get when its just diced duck with rice and egg with no gravy whatsoever

Steamed Pa Ting fish with Olive, Chilli & Garlic - A most forgettable dish - steamed fish at its most uninspiring. The fish was fresh but not particularly sweet. It didn't help that the fish was rather small as well.

Sauteed Fresh Scallop with Assorted Mushroom - The scallops were supposed to be the main focal point in this dish, but ironically I preferred the mushrooms better. Tasty, juicy and the direct opposite of the scallops, which were a tad too soft without much bite and rather bland. Portions are pathetic as well and we had to limit everyone to 2 scallops each. Talk about rationing.

>$65pax is rather expensive for such an average repertoire of food, the Peking duck withstanding. Service is excellent and all of the wait staff are attentive and friendly. After doing my math, I reckon I'll be back just for the $28 Peking duck. No more, no less.

We managed to score last minute reservations for a Sunday Morning because this place is so crowded! Usually I'm not a big fan of large portioned meals, but I swear I couldn't get enough. The service here is better than most Chinese restaurants, and although the restaurant is usually busy, the servers are attentive and speedy. You get your money's worth!

Went for lunch at Asia Grand it is having promotion for Peking Duck (as shown in picture). Indeed it is a promotion which is worth going for as the duck skin was so crispy and serving was quite generous. Definitely something which I would recommend one to order.Besides Peking Duck, I also tried some of the Dim Sums which include the Salted Egg Yolk bun, Har Gou, Chee Cheong Fun (with prawn) and Zha Leong (which is the similar to Chee Cheong Fun except that the filling is Yu Tiao). Besides Peking Duck, I also tried some of the Dim Sums which include the Salted Egg Yolk bun, Har Gou, Chee Cheong Fun (with prawn) and Zha Leong (which is the similar to Chee Cheong Fun except that the filling is Yu Tiao). Personally, I prefer the Salted Egg Yolk bun from Mouth Restaurant as I find that the filling (for the one which is served at Asia Grand) seemed to have hardened - the salted egg yolk paste did not ooze out after I took my first bite. As for the Har Gou and Chee Cheong Fun, they tasted good but quite similar to those which I can easily find in other Chinese restaurants. However, I was kinda pleased to know that Asia Grand serves Zha Leong as it is a Dim Sum which is not commonly found in Singapore.

Everybody talk about Crystal Jade serves one of the best dimsum in town, and I totally agree. However, if you want to lower your budget a little bit, I'd highly recommend Asia Grand. For the price that you paid with the food quality that they serve, it's worth to give it a try. However, I found that their dimsum variety is not as fancy as Crystal Jade though. Speaking of dinner, they also serve good seafood too, although I only trice once.

It's my first visit to Asia Grand was pleasently surprised that most of the food was good except the har kow and the porridge. The har kow's prawn was a let down as the taste just not right and as for the porridge, paid $9++ for a bowl of beef porridge and got around 8 slices of beef and the taste was bland. I've tried my friend's chicken porridge and it tasted quite porky (wonder why). The steamed items I would raved about was the glutinous rice in lotus leaf , the steamed BBQ pork bun, th

The steamed items I would raved about was the glutinous rice in lotus leaf , the steamed BBQ pork bun, the chee cheong fun(be it prawns or char siew) and the shao mai was so yummy and the ingredients in the glutinous rice were generous. As for the fried items, the fried delicious dumplings, fried yam dumplings and the spring onions pancake is a must on the table. Anyway, will still go again. Verdict 8.5/10

Food quality here is decent. However I need to highlight that their prawn dishes for most the dim sums are quite dry and not juicy, what a waste. Porridge looks quite pettite as there's not much ingredients in it and is quite tasteless. Only their Fried carrot cake may score a few points from me as is quite fragrant with the diced chinese sausage in it. Service quality is alright and the environment is nice and cosy. My verdict: 6/10
