I loved the secluded setting of this classy, elegant French restaurant - the indoors exude old-world charm while the outdoors lends serenity from nature, with its gently flowing waterfalls and rocky walls. The ambience was totally tranquil, marvelously enchanting and romantic.

My main course - Black Cod came next - another buttery smooth delicacy but with the light, fishy succulence instead of the heavy richness of the appetiser. The lobster bisque that graced the fish was awesome - it was the icing on the cake!

The Venison Loin was also served - another tender chunks of savoury delicacy that sprang to life in the mouth. The venison loin was chewy and boosted of the richness of beef, but came with a slightly gamey hint - subtle, easily masked with the lovely sauce and cream it was served with.

Service was great, and the ambience was dark and romantic.
It was our wedding anniversary, and the service staff took the trouble to prepare a slice of cake, with "happy anniversary" written on the plate in chocolate sauce. A very nice touch indeed!

Portions are fair.
Their executive set lunch is also worth a try.

Pork rillettes, Violet mustard & sage
The Pork Rillettes were traditionally made with fatty pork belly or pork shoulder, shredded, seasoned and cooked slowly over low heat until very tender. The pork rillettes was garnished with violet mustard and sage, created a good rillettes for a starter.

Sautéed duck foie gras, hazelnuts and Mirabelle plums
Foie gras is one of the best delicacies in the French cuisine; we love the soft texture of the foie gras encased by the slight crisp and charred exterior. The richness and piquant of the foie gras immediately bursts out in the mouth and nothing but every bite was heavenly delicious.

French duck leg confit, pear, butternut pumpkin & vanilla puree and Verjuice
One of the chef’s signature dish, we truly enjoyed the crispiness of the duck skin and the flavoursome of the meat, dabbed with butternut pumpkin and vanilla puree made the dish truly impressive, both in the taste and presentation.

It was our first anniversary yesterday, and we decided to settle for somewhere at Dempsey Hill to celebrate because of its romantic ambiance (we assumed).
In the end, my bf reserved two seats at Au Petit Salut, which specializes in French cuisine, for it's 3 course lunch set meal.
The meal sets us to about $36++ for each, totaling $80 odd.
It was actually gloomy yesterday, and we could have opted for seats outside.
Didn't imagine that the weather would be rather cooling, since these few days have been very very warm.
Well anyway, sitting inside was not bad too.

I believe reservations should be done if you want to dine here.
When I was there for my lunch meal, the whole place was nearly fully-seated.
For starters, my bf had the escargots served on bone marrow.
ERGH, didn't fancy the escargot cause I can't appreciate them, but my bf said it was rather good, so don't quote me.

For me, I had (you know, I had to refer to my photos to see what I ordered. Shows how unimpressive the dish was to me lol) salad
The salad was pretty average, but I love the mushrooms and the bread toast in it.
Gobbled most of them up, while sharing most of the salad with my bf haha

My steak was ordered in medium, and I think it was done rather well.
But the problem is that it was difficult to chew.
Had to chew really long, and somehow the blood from the steak had this smell that doesn't make it taste fresh.
Anyway, the mash potato was AWESOME!
My bf said it tasted like it's made from powder, but I don't care, I just LOVE IT.
Haha, can't believe I like the "cheapest" thing out of the plate, oh well.

Should have ordered the choux bun, my bf was reprimanding me about not going with my choices and blindly following people's recommendation -.-
Of course must see what people comment right.
Read a few blogs that recommended choux bun, but at that moment, I wanted to try the creme brulee.
Eh, too bad.
Doubt I'll be heading back again to eat their choux bun
(

While such an experience was good for an anniversary, I can't comment very positively about the food.
I guess I'm not good at choosing lol

Flaked smoked Haddock, beetroot, Hibiscus puree and Ko Giku flowers
This dish was really good. The haddock was supposed to be salty and it was balanced well with the light flavour of the beetroot. I do not like salty food but I could tell that the tastebuds enjoyed the company of the haddock. Lol.

Sautéed duck foie gras, Balsamic braised onions, Aioli & pea shoots
Slightly crisp on the outside, the foie gras had a melt-in-the-mouth texture. The presentation of this dish was minimalistic and I loved how there was a cute pea shoot standing on the top of the foie gras.

Fillet of Barramundi, salsify braised in red wine and roasted mushrooms & Samphire
I could not taste any red wine but it was okay as I am not a fan of alcoholic drinks. The mushrooms had a "crunchy" texture to it yet it was really juicy inside. Barramundi was very tender but it was a pity that the skin was not crispy. There were some fine bones in it too which made eating a little difficult since the lightings were dim. It was tasty, nevertheless.

400 days grain fed Wagyu rib eye,‘Pommes Mousseline’ and red wine sauce
The BF had this. The potato puree was really delightful and I loved it. The beef, served medium rare, had a uniform consistency. The toppings on top (corns and veg) did not seem to complement the beef but thankfully they still tasted good.

Polenta & olive oil cake, Mandarin and gingerbread mousse, vanilla ice cream
I was having a hard time snapping shots for this dessert as there were not enough lights to capture a good shot and I did not want to use my flash. Thankfully, the vanilla ice-cream was extremely obedient and did not melt a single bit. Everything in this dessert complemented well with each other.

Chocolate Crème Brulée
The surface was caramelized well and was topped with some chocolate balls. Even though the entire dessert only had the distinct chocolate taste, it did not overwhelm as the chocolate was not one of rich flavour. It was a sweet ending to our meal.

Their set dinner is really affordable for a fine dining restaurant so if you have a budget on hand, you can try out Au Petit Salut.

$88+ for set dinner

That's why I prefer seating outdoors under the fan and soaking in the sounds of the waterfall feature. If you do not mind the lack of air-conditioning, it's a pretty good option. At least you get to hear yourself better.

The Food

Anyway, they serve up a set-lunch which can be had for S$36 less taxes. For starters, you can try the snails or pork terrine. But if you had tried APS prior, you would have noticed that snails are now served on 'half a bone'. I preferred the previous way that it was served...in a 6-pitted bowl which sizzled with overflowing herbs and garlic butter.

Burgundy snails 3.5/5

However, I prefer the pork and prune terrine. Even though I am not a fan of dried fruits like raisins, prunes and dates, the culprit here is not discernible. The pork is of a good briny flavour and smooth texture. Goes well with the complimentary bread.

If you are adventurous, you can have a go at the prawn tartare if it is available. Raw prawns paired with poached quail egg and cucumbers....heavenly.

Conclusion
There are also other starter options to be had for an added cost such as the Alaskan king crab or seared foie gras. But if need to be mindful on the wallet, the standard fare are good as well.

Au Petit Salut is the posh sister restaurant of the casual bistro Chez Salut over at MBFC. I much prefer the tranquil garden locale of the former to the cityside bustle of the latter.

Service was discreet and professional, but warm enough to feel personalised. Save for the long gap between our mains and desserts, we didn't have any complains about their almost stellar service. The long wait for our sweets may have been attributed to the fact that we'd ordered a chocolate fondant cake from the ala carte menu in addition to the ones on our set dinner menu, so while the waitress did inform us in advance that the fondant attracted a 15-minute wait, she also waited for the fondant to be done before serving all of the desserts up at the same time. I think it would have been much better timing to serve us the set menu desserts first, to tide us over, and then serve up the 15-minutes lag-time fondant. We would have been finishing up the set menu desserts just in time to enjoy the arrival of the fondant.

Food was a mixed bunch of greats and okays, nothing very wrong with any of the dishes but a few of them could have been greats. We were pleasantly surprised (and loved) that the set dinner was priced so affordably at $88++ for 2 starters, a main and dessert, finished off with a coffee or tea. Especially in view of the fact that this restaurant is very much lauded and a venerable kingpin in the (local) world of fine French dining.

We had:

1) Chilled Alaskan King Crab cake on a tomato espuma, topped with radishes, with a brush of black squid ink aioli and shotglass of king crab foam, was a refreshing start to dinner. It was clean, clear and with the barest of sweetness.

2) The Sauteed Duck Foie Gras was meltingly delicious. Mandarin gel, gingerbread pearls and orange segments served to lend a citrusy lightness to the heavy fat of the goose liver. This was so good that it could have converted an animal activist

3) The Fillet of Black Cod was smooth and moist and fatty, contrasted with the crackling crispy rice crust. A mound of quinoa, mussels and chorizo mash, saffron dressing and crustacean froth lent a bright, sunny and seafresh burst of flavour to the complex dish

4) The French Duck Leg Confit was the best dish of dinner, hands down. It was jam-packed with flavour, and fall-off-the-bone tender. Geriatrics would have loved this - no chewing involved! A unique white chocolate & cauliflower purée was a nice twist from the usual mash, and the pomegranate relish provided a fruity sweetness.

5) The Chocolate and Pear Mousse Torte with vanilla ice-cream, fresh strawberries and shimmery chocolate pellets was nuanced and just the right balance of sweetness and richness.

Grilled tuna which was slightly disappointing, in the sense that even though we were asked if we wanted the tuna done rare and we said yes, it still arrived almost cooked through except a tiny pink centre. It was quite tasty with the tomato-based sauce, though, but it would’ve been so much better if it had been less cooked.
Good enough food though I expected better from the place’s reputation. Service was surprisingly friendly

Au Petit Salut is a great place for dinner. It is very cosy and dimly lit, making it very comfortable to be there. We ordered the French Onion Soup. The soup was good! Thick and very flavourful! As for the main, i've chosen Crispy French duck leg confit, sautéed potatoes, bacon,
mixed greens and walnut dressing. I've tried other french restaurant duck leg confit before. So i must say this may not be the best duck leg confit afterall. To me, it's not crispy enough and not toothsome enough.

I would still have a second visit to try out other dishes though...

Service is good
keep it up!
